    Cameras.co.uk - Cameras.co.uk - Apr 30, 2008 - Editorial review
The Canon IXUS 970 IS is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 5x optical zoom lens. It has a metal body and is a step up in overall quality compared to most point and shoot digital cameras.
Why Buy the Canon IXUS 970 IS?
The Canon IXUS digital camera range has always been impressive when it comes to picture quality. Extra features such as image stabilisation have also become the norm. The IXUS 970 IS upholds the tradition of good picture quality, stylish design and impressive build quality. This model also has a slight increase in the length of the zoom lens over its predecessors. It also has a top quality LCD screen.
    Image Quality
    Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)
The most striking feature of this shot is the amount of detail you can see in the lighter areas of the photo. The resolution is outstanding. This helps to make the shots appear sharply focused. Some of that sharp focusing is lost at the edges of the shot and if I was being picky I would also say that in where the sun cannot quite reach the IXUS 970 IS is unable to match the definition managed by the Panasonic DMC FS5 I reviewed recently. These are minor points though and this is a good start.

    Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)
With the lens zoomed right out my test shot is about average in terms of focusing. There is also a small amount of purple fringing showing on the boat towards the left hand side of the picture.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom) Read full review

    DCResource.com - Jeff Keller - Aug 11, 2008 - Editorial review
Pros: Very good photo quality (in good light); 5X optical zoom in a compact, stylish body; Optical image stabilization; Generally snappy performance; Optical viewfinder, a rarity in this class (even though its tiny); Redeye not a problem thanks to automatic removal tool; Well implemented face detection feature; Movie mode supports VGA quality clips as long as one hour; Above average battery life

Cons: Images are on the noisy side in low light; Some corner blurring; LCD very difficult to see when wearing polarized sunglasses; Lens is on the slow side (in terms of aperture); Sluggish flash recharging; Difficult to access power button; More manual controls would be nice; Can't swap memory cards while using a tripod

Canon's PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH is a good choice for those who want a little extra zoom power from a compact camera. It offers very good photo quality (in good light), a 5X zoom lens, optical image stabilization, good performance, and plenty of point-and-shoot features -- all in a stylish package. Nobody's perfect, and that goes for cameras, too. The SD890's lens is on the slow side, its low light performance is just so-so, and the LCD is nearly impossible to see if you're wearing polarized sunglasses (this issue would prevent me personally from buying the camera). If those things don't bother you, then the PowerShot SD890 is absolutely worth a look. Read full review

    CNET - Lori Grunin - May 13, 2008 - Editorial review
Pros: Optical image stabilization; optical viewfinder; decent photos.

Cons: Poor shot-to-shot performance; small LCD; awkward design; no optical zoom in movie capture.

Bottom Line: A solid compact snapshooter, the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS nevertheless disappoints when compared with its predecessors and line-mates.

Whether human or camera, it's always hard following in the footsteps of a popular sibling, and the near-universally well-liked Canon PowerShot SD850 IS is a harder act to follow than most. Rather than simply bump up the resolution and zoom range for the SD890 IS--it's now 10 megapixels, up from 8, and 5x zoom, up from 4x--Canon chose to redesign the camera as well. The result is an almost completely different--and ultimately not as satisfying--compact point-and-shoot.

With its thick 2.3-by-3.8-by-1.1-inch body, the 6.5-ounce camera can slide somewhat comfortably into a loose pants pocket. The SD890 IS sports a much curvier design than its predecessor, including a gently sloping front where you grip the camera.
