Product features

  • 25mm ultra wide-angle lens
The DMC-ZS7 features a 25mm ultra wide-angle 12x optical zoom f/3.3-4.9 Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens. Incorporating Panasonic's advanced optical technologies, this lens system is comprised of 10 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lenses and 2 aspherical lenses/3 aspherical surfaces while preserving compactness. Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the Leica Elmar lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful images any time, any place.
  • 16x intelligent zoom/23.4x extra optical zoom
Thanks to the newly incorporated intelligent resolution technology, the intelligent zoom is available with the DMC-ZS7 which extends the zoom ratio by approximate 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 12x optical can virtually extend to 16x equivalent. Furthermore, the extra optical zoom function that extends zoom power to 23.4x by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer.
  • Powerful 12x optical zoom
The addition of AVCHD Lite HD movie recording doubles the appeal of the DMC-ZS7. This single camera lets you capture virtually all images in their natural beauty. It gives you both motion and still images, and ranges from 25mm ultra wide-angle shots of sweeping landscapes to powerful 12x optical zoom shots that pull distant subjects right up close. The mechanism design minimizes the noise of auto focusing or zooming.
  • Travel mode with GPS for both photos and movies
By simply turning on the GPS function, the location data and time are automatically updated. It is great for travel recordings. The DMC-TS7 camera is acclaimed as an excellent travel companion because of a wide shooting range and hybrid recording capability of high quality photos and movies. The DMC-ZS7 further enhances its value by adding a built-in GPS unit into the camera.

  1. DCRP Review: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7

      By Jeff Keller - Mar 15, 2010 - Editorial review - DCResource.com
Pros: Very good photo quality at low ISOs; Packs a 12X, 25 - 300 mm lens into a small, well-built package; Optical image stabilization (new and improved); Beautiful 3-inch LCD display with excellent resolution and outdoor / low light visibility; Manual exposure controls, finally; Intelligent Auto mode picks a scene for you, detects faces, tracks a moving subject, sharpens edges, brightens shadows, and reduces blur; Well implemented face detection and recognition system; Built-in GPS with quick location acquisition time (in most cases), impressive database of landmarks, and auto clock setting; Records video at 1280 x 720 with digital stereo sound, with use of optical zoom and image stabilizer; Good collection of features in playback mode, including a photo straightening tool; HDMI output; Optional underwater case
Cons: Image quality, especially at higher ISOs, is not as good as its predecessor; Heavy noise reduction smudges fine details, even at low ISOs, and especially at ISO 400 and above; Highlight clipping is fairly common; Redeye a problem; Smallest aperture in manual modes is F6.3 (would've expected F8.0); RAW support, manual focus would be nice; AVCHD Lite video format is difficult to work with, though Motion JPEG codec is also available; Unremarkable continuous shooting mode; No optical viewfinder; Can't access memory card slot while camera is on a tripod -- door covering battery/memory card compartment on the flimsy side; Skimpy amount of built-in memory -- no Mac

  2. Leave your DSLR at home

      By Photo enthusiast - 54 - Jun 4, 2010 - B&H Photo-Video-Audio
I bought ZS7 for summer travel. Pocketablity compared to my DSLR, good picture quality, 12X zooming ratio, 25mm equivalent wide angle lens, HD video, zoom capability during video recording, good sound capturing, one-touch video recording, SDHX card compatibility, large and sharp LCD are the reasons I select ZS7 among its competitors. I have been using ZS7 for a few weeks now. The camera starts immediately and doesn't have any noticeable freeze after taking a picture. The picture quality is really par with a DSLR at the lower ISOs but quickly deteriorates exceeding the base ISO as expected from a small sensor camera. Since my wife never increases the picture size on her computer screen even 1600 ISO is acceptable for her. She uses the camera in IAuto mode which delivers what most people expect 95% of the time. There is some high-light clipping in the sunny conditions but this can be avoided by manually adjusting contrast and exposure. In fact ZS7 offers manual sharpness, noise, contrast and exposure controls like a DSLR. The vibration reduction on ZS7 works better than my DSLR lenses 70-300VR and 18-55VR. I often disable flash and take pictures with available light. The auto focus is fast for a PS camera, AF tracing and face recognition works. ZS7 can also memorize the faces and attaches names to the pictures. However this doesn't work most of the time. GPS functions without any problem, even ZS7 attaches the name of the area (monument, historic place etc.) to the picture more »

  3. Everything in your shirt pocket

      By Winetripper - Jul 18, 2010 - Adorama Camera
Pros: Nice Body Color; Good Image Stabilization; Great Zoom; Good in Low Light; GREAT Macro Pictures
Cons: Short Battery Life; Fixed LCD
Totally disagree with the "semi-pro photographer" who gave this camera a one-star rating. First, the Leica lens is fantastic - at both tele and macro distances and everywhere in between. And second, the camera will do just about everything but make coffee.
What I like: Macro and macro zoom that focus down practically to the lens. The camera takes pictures of details I can't see. And the telephoto at its maximum digital power will also bring in details I can't see. (I have 20-20 eyesight).
Great lens quality that produces extra-crisp images.
Manual and automatic exposure control that permits as much or little input from the user as desired.
Small size that makes the camera easy to carry.
GPS that recognizes many obscure geographic locations.
Screen view options that include a grid mode that reduces crooked pictures.
