The MFC-8440 is a 5-in-1 flatbed laser multi-function center combining performance, connectivity, and reliability. The MFC-8440 is a full-feature fax, and an up to 21ppm, laser printer, which prints at up to 2400 x 600 dpi (HQ1200). An up to 21cpm, legal-size digital copier and a 9600x9600 dpi (interpolated) resolution color flatbed scanner. You can copy objects such as books and magazines, or make reduction and enlargement from 25-400%. Also included is PC Fax capability, allowing you to send and receive faxes directly from your PC.     Pros: Fast; inexpensive; good print quality; extensive fax features.
    Cons: Mediocre scan quality, especially color.
    Bottom Line: Brother's MFC-8440 covers the bases and is easy to use, but it's a weak choice for scanning.
    Although Brother's monochrome laser-based multifunction MFC-8440 has a price and features similar to HP's LaserJet 3030, it beat the HP printer in CNET Labs' speed and image-quality tests. The Brother MFC-8440 features a vendor-rated 21ppm, 600dpi print engine, a 600-by-2,400dpi flatbed color scanner with a 50-page automatic document feeder, and a fax engine with some unusual but useful capabilities. Our one serious complaint about the Brother MFC-8440 is its lousy scan quality, especially on color documents. But overall, the Brother MFC-8440 makes small-office tasks easy to perform. For most small-business users, the attractive print quality will offset the disappointing scans.     Read full review

    I purchased a refurb 8440. After using inkjets for years, my costs and quality should go way down. The unit has been great so far, a bit noisier while printing than I anticipated, but not bad at all. I m still figuring out some of the details of setup, like displaying 12 hour time vs. 24 hour, and setting up fax heading vs. none. I m very pleased for the price.

    Works great- do your homework before your purchase- tonor is approx $75 to $85 depending on where you buy-also don t lose the operating manual and plan on spending some time reading it-the manual and machine are not user friendly but it is operater friendly so far, works fast and copy s are clear. Faxes are fast and clear-not a great scanner but will do the job. again for the price if you looking for a ALL-IN-ONE to run your home business ITS A GOOD BUY-this does what i need it to do.
