We're off the train now. This is the engine that was pulling us. It's a restored GE diesel-electric unit dating back to the 1950s. The White Pass & Yukon Route rail fleet consists of 20 diesel-electric locomotives from GE (1950s) and ALCO (1960s). They also have 80 restored or replica passenger coaches. The oldest coach is from 1883 and sees daily use on the line.
The best shot I could manage with the two Princess ships in port together. Royal Princess is on the left and Sapphire Princess on the right. Like the Emerald Princess I rode last year, Sapphire Princess holds over 2600 passengers. Royal Princess, a former Renaissance ship, is significantly smaller and carries only about 700 passengers. The Royal Princess is a very nice ship, but the sea can throw it around much easier than a large ship. We had 20-foot swells in the Gulf of Alaska one night and it was hard to stay in bed.

Downtown Skagway. Chain stores are not allowed, so the Starbucks is just a counter inside a jewelry store. It seems there is a Diamonds International in every port including Skagway. I don't know why that's not considered a chain store. I'm also pretty sure there are no diamond mines in Alaska. Why some people think cruise ship ports are a good place to buy jewelry is beyond me.
