David Needham - Really? I find it a little scary. It saved over 7gb from compressing my photos and my applications, but since I already had 100gb free that doesn't matter so much. I was concerned about the system performance from compressing the applications. :-/Mar 2
Matthew Needham - What do you compress? The main stuff I offload to an external drive is photos and music, and I don't expect any savings there (it could get bigger). I'm too paranoid to compress everything, I would also be a little concerned about losing access to my photos and music (I've not read up on this...). I suppose it would safe (thanks to the magic of dcvs) and effective to compress my Adium and webkit source trees, but they're only 3.8G. I grabbed a copy just in case...Mar 2
William Glick - I gained over 20GB by compressing all the miscellaneous documents in my Documents folder. It mostly contains PDF, Word, Excel, and text documents. I'm always at the edge of filling my laptop drive, so that's a nice huge boost for me.
I discovered today that Squeeze doesn't support compression on external drives, which is where I keep all my videos, photos, and music at home.
Squeeze uses the native compression built into the newer versions of the HFS used by Snow Leopard.Mar 2
