Apple’s tantrum against cellphone makers
A very long piece about Apple's behaviour in the cellphone market and their suits with HTC and Nokia. A brief appearance from Microsoft who offer their viewpoint. And we have a discussion on how Apple is using HTC to go after Google.

An interview with the inventor of the cellphone
From CSPAN's "The Communicators", watch an interview with Martin Cooper, the man accredited as being the inventor of the cellphone. Whether you love or hate the device, they have become so much a part of modern society that it is almost crippling to be without one in general day to day life. Would you, or could you, give yours up?

Stephen Cropp - I still prefer Google Reader on its own over Buzz. I think Google Reader would've been a much better place to integrate Buzz rather than Gmail...
I much prefer Twitter... But like you, everyone else uses Facebook so I'm stuck there too. Pity, because Twitter is so much more enjoyable. ;-)Mar 11

Nikki Sutherland - ohhhh and good luck for today :) :)Mar 11
Stephen Cropp - Its been postponed till tomorrow afternoon. Which is good in a way coz I'm still struggling with this flu thats knocked me for 6 for the past week+Mar 11
Nikki Sutherland - So Saturday afternoon yeah? Cool good luck for tomorrow then :)Mar 11
Stephen Cropp - Thanks... Still not sure about whether I want it or not, but its a job I guess. The other job would be so ideal, but I don't know how much longer I can hold out waiting for them to get through all the applicants. They had over 2000 in 4 days before they were forced to pull the ad. Was lucky to make it to the short list.Mar 11
Nikki Sutherland - far out that's nuts over 2000 in 4 days?!?!?!Mar 11
Stephen Cropp - Its a pretty sweet job. Cover from New Plymouth across to Napier and everywhere north as far as Kaitaia, but not the Bay of Plenty of Coromandel. Oh well... ;-)Mar 11
Nikki Sutherland - Well don't give up yet you never know :)Mar 11
Stephen Cropp - We'll see.
This interview that was supposed to be today, then tomorrow, is now Monday evening at 6pm. Starting to not want the job, which is bad given how desperately I need the money.Mar 11

Nikki Sutherland - Why do they keep changing it? That's a bad look if the explanation isn't up to scratch?Mar 11
Stephen Cropp - The boss of the company wants it out of hours. So he suggested Saturday. I said 3pm was fine, but then the boss said not till after 5pm when they close the doors for the day. Being me, I wasn't going to go in at that time on a Saturday unless I'm getting paid for it, so I said no to that.
That left Monday at 6pm when they close for the day. Thus, my interview for a job I'm not even sure I'll like is for 6pm on Monday in New Market, at a store down by the Farmers carpark.
All arranged by a wombat of a recruiter that doesn't know IT and actually signs his emails stating he's in "Sales & Recruiting." Not sure how an agency has sales.... Unless they deal in human trafficking from around the globe for the slave market.Mar 11

Nikki Sutherland - LOL!!!!!!!!! :) its his job to sell you on a job and also his job to sell "you" to the company. Crock of shit really ;)
And fair enough with you not wanting to go in on Saturday night!Mar 11

LikeDestiny Church Beat Up
A discussion regarding a fake website that many are wrongly attributing as being a legitimate site belonging to Brian Tamaki and the Destiny Church. I think it is wrong for bloggers and media to attribute the site to Tamaki when it is easily verified to not be the case. I include an audio recording of my call to Destiny Church to verify exactly that.

LikePublic response to Telecom problems unreasonable
The hostility towards Telecom NZ in recent weeks has been completely disproportionate to the network issues they are suffering. Calm heads and cool tempers are needed right now, not disproportionate emotional responses.

Aaron Hauraki - haha sounds like telecom are getting whats coming to them after all theses years of screwing New Zealand and trying to slow down the inevitable, good job i hope their dam xt net work dies like 025Mar 1

Stephen Cropp - 025 didn't die. It was deliberately shut down because the technology was too old for it to continue being economically viable to maintain and continue running.
As for the rest of your statement, I've already responded to much the same sort of comment on the blog post comments section. Its not worth responding further.Mar 1

LikeI am removing Google Reader from my Buzz stream. I have decided that its not worth the mess it makes of my Gmail to have Google Reader in Buzz.
If you want to follow me, you can do so in Google Reader, or at http://www.google.com/reader/shared/06666812398950130630

Nikki Sutherland - hahaha I wondered why I didn't have lots of stuff to read on here this morning :)Feb 17
Stephen Cropp - I went to try and find an email I'd sent a couple of weeks ago, and my Sent Items in Gmail had a copy of every single article Buzz had pulled from Google Reader. Buzz has made it a lot more difficult to get through my emails.
Google have promised better filters and more options for the Buzz stuff "soon", but till then I'm just going to have to keep Google Reader out as I always have.Feb 17

LikeBecause I share so much stuff with Google Reader (I go through about 3000 sites a day on Google Reader) I have removed it from Buzz to annoy people less. Sorry folks. Guess not everyone likes the old FriendFeed.com model ;-)

Nikki Sutherland - lol it just reports on EVERYTHING hahahahaFeb 10
Stephen Cropp - Yeah, but you don't see stuff in your Inbox unless you comment on it or like it or someone @ replies you into the conversation. Also, it collapses the stuff that may not be relevant to you, so you have to click to expand it.
Maybe I should add Google Reader back. :-PFeb 10

Nikki Sutherland - LOL I had like 22 posts in under an hour I was wondering where they were LOLFeb 10
Stephen Cropp - Yeah, they collapse down. Kind of the way email conversations do. You can click on the group to expand them out again.Feb 10
Nikki Sutherland - yeah I realised that then laughed my ass off at how much of it (ALL) was yours hahahaha :)Feb 10
Stephen Cropp - Like I said, I share a lot of stuff online that you guys rarely ever see. I consume a massive amount of information in a single day and share a small fraction of it via Google Reader. That you thought that small amount that made it into Buzz was a lot probably means I need to trim my feeds down a little ;-)Feb 10
Anouska Higham - Geek Hard!!!!Feb 10
Stephen Cropp - Yeah, but a well informed geek. :-P And its not all technical crap. Theres jokes and fun things in there too. Some of its about cellphones/cellular companies, some of it is about gadgets, some of its about technical subjects, some of its about games, some of it is relevant to New Zealand current affairs. Some of it is stuff like IMMD or lolcats-type images. Or comics/cartoons.
But yes, theres over 3000 sites I read from most days. If I miss a day, I have no chance of catching up so will often just mark it all as read and start fresh. Feb 10

LikeKinda scared the flood of stuff I do online into people's Buzz box is going to overwhelm them. Especially when I'm using Google Reader. I share LOTS of stuff in Google Reader.
Nikki Sutherland - hahaha yeah I can already see its going to eat up my Buzz page!!! :)Feb 10
Stephen Cropp - Ok, I've stopped for a few hours now :-) Your buzz stream is freed up again ;-)
I'm gonna yank Google Reader out of my Buzz though. I doubt most people give a shit about what I share, or you'd already be reading it on Google Reader anyway.Feb 10

LikeHowto: Get variable substrings in Bat/Cmd scripts
In this tutorial I show how to get substrings from environment variables in a DOS shell or Command Prompt environment. We use this to create log files with that days date in the file name using batch scripts. We will then create a script that can be scheduled to defrag a computers drives and output the results to the log file we specify.
