My kids have a ton of clothes and outgrow them pretty fast. When I think about how much money I spent on them versus the amount of time they actually wore them, it makes me sick. I feel like that is money down the drain.

However, I found a pretty cool website that I think is really going to help out on their clothing bill.

Kiddieo Mall is a marketplace for parents to buy and sell quality brand name used kids stuff. They have used kids clothes, used kids toys, use baby gear, and more.

This is such a great way to recycle your kids unused or outgrown stuff! The items vary at different times just depending on what other parents have listed. But it’s easy to check back often to see what new items are available.

PLUS for every item that you buy you’ll earn reward points that you can redeem for gifts. How cool is that?

Getting Started is EASY!

Register – sign up for a FREE account to start selling

List your item – list your item by filling in their easy form

Upload your pictures – you can upload up to four pictures for your item

Pay listing fee – you pay a low listing fee or upgrade to “Featured Items” to showcase your items on the Homepage.

Ship your items – ship your items within 5 (five) business days after receiving payment

Another feature on the site is that they provide product reviews for products. So if you are thinking about a purchase you can hear what others have to say about it.Overall, it’s a great site for finding used clothing and selling yours. Check it out!

As I sit here on my couch, with my laptop on lap, I’m not as comfortable as I should be. There’s something in my way… and it isn’t my laptop.

It’s the extra inches of fat that have taken form around my middle.

Now to be clear… this is Susan talking, NOT Janice. If you’ve seen Janice lately, you know that she is incredibly skinny these days and doesn’t have any inches to lose.

But while Janice has been carefully watching her calories over the last several months, I’ve been emotionally eating.

My weight gain had a lot to do with such naughty treats as the tubs of Ben & Jerry’s that somehow found their way to my home. But another real and unfortunate factor was that I hurt my back three months ago while lifting my sleeping 4 yr old and I was unable to even walk for weeks.

After a couple months of chiropractor treatments, I’m finally now able to resume exercise.

But losing this unwanted 15 lbs is not going to be easy. So I’ve signed up for the Quaker Heart Health Challenge and I’m committing to get back in shape.

My favorite exercise is a fast, long power walk in the fresh air. But, it’s winter… and walking in the pouring rain is not fun. Fortunately, I discovered that the treadmill in our townhouse’s community common area is working again. (Whenever I’d tried in years gone by, it hadn’t worked.)

So I’m committed to power walking on the treadmill for at least 45 minutes, 3 times a week. I’m also going to pull out some of my exercise videos, and give those a whirl. I love yoga and pilates, so I’m going to get my mat out and try out some poses again. I’ve banned Ben & Jerry from my home and I’m stocking up on veggies and dip.

I may not be as skinny as Janice when BlogHer comes round this summer, but I will be in shape.

How about you? Do you wish you were in better shape? Do you want to join me in this challenge?

Joining the Quaker Heart Health Challenge is my first step towards becoming a healthier me. Now I’m curious to know, what motivates you to stay healthy?

In her own words:

“The goal of this book is to shake you up a little,” shares Jenna. “No matter where you are in your faith journey — whether you are new to this God thing or you have known what a relationship with Jesus is like your entire life — when you finish this book, I want you to stop settling. Stop settling for a faith that is dull, boring, blah. So many of us get stuck in a lifeless faith and just stay there, thinking that this is what life with God is about. No! God wants more for us!”

Throughout the book, Jenna poses questions, challenging the reader to apply what she’s teaching. There are even blanks provided to journal the answer.

This book particularly caught my eye, because I happen to live with a lovely 13-year-old girl. My daughter Amanda takes her faith very seriously, and it’s been sweet to watch her take ownership of her relationship with God. I asked her to look over the book this weekend, and I got her opinion.

After reading three chapters she said, “I like it. It can be a bit cheesy (okay, a lot cheesy), but I like the message, and I love all the short testimonies. I’m definitely going to finish this book.”

I asked her how she would describe “the message,” and she said “how to get closer to God.” I also asked for a clarification on that “cheesy” comment, and she couldn’t really explain it. I think it’s the conversational tone, which in my mind made it very accessible and easy to read.

I’m glad she likes the book and will spend some more time with it, but I’m even gladder that she is taking responsibility to strengthen her faith.

Pop Quiz

Do any of the following sound familiar?

Your baby would rather observe the world around her from the vantage point of your arms (While in a sling. Bouncing. And nursing.).

When he’s hungry, wet, irritated, overwhelmed, or bored, he isn’t shy about letting you know, long and loud.

Sleeping through the night is a term you think you’ve heard before, but certainly haven’t experienced anytime recently.

His nicknames all include the words fuss, cranky, or grumpy in some way, shape or form.

At any given playgroup, your child will be the one clinging desperately to your leg and/or verbally or non-verbally insisting on going home.

The food she loved yesterday makes her gag oh-so-cutely today. Oh, and tomorrow she can’t get enough of it.

You don’t understand the phrase “Enjoy the newborn stage, it’s passes so quickly”. To you that’s like saying “Enjoy having your appendix removed, the recovery period passes so quickly”.

The soothing techniques you’ve tried include but are not limited to bouncing like a maniac on an exercise ball, swinging the car seat to a height just short of dangerous, and frantically hissing in your baby’s ear.

If you can relate to any of the above, congratulations! You probably have a high need baby!

Sammy with big sister, 4 months old (It's not what it looks like)

The High Need Baby

Let me explain briefly about my own experience of having a high need baby.

Sammy was born in late 2006, our second child, and what we hoped would be our ‘easy’ baby. Our daughter had been a bit colicky (I know, this is like saying your house burned down ‘a bit’). She had lots of contented moments, but these were definitely coupled with at least an equal number of fussy ones.

If a person could avoid having a colicky baby by sheer determination (which, in case you’re wondering, you can’t), Sammy wouldn’t have had it.

I was terrified to have another fussy baby, and was pretty sure our second would be OK since:

We were more relaxed this time around,

I had read every baby sleep book I could find, and

The odds were in our favour (only 1 in 5 babies are colicky…what are the chances of having 2?)

Well, as you can probably guess by now, Sammy was colicky. From the moment he was born he was screaming or crying almost constantly (I know you’re probably thinking I’m exaggerating, but I assure you I’m not. When Sam was exactly 4 weeks old he had about 10 minutes where he was lying awake on the bed NOT crying. I told my husband to grab the camera and take a picture to mark this milestone).

We waited desperately for the 3 month mark to arrive which (we had heard) would bring a sudden and mysterious end to the crying and fussiness.

We waited. And waited. And waited.

And guess what?

It never came!

Searching for help

When Sammy was around 4 months old, I vividly remember looking around online and coming across an article on high need babies.

I couldn’t believe there was a name for how my baby was. I knew older babies couldn’t have colic, so I didn’t understand why Sammy was still so high-maintenance. I didn’t know if there was something medically wrong with him, if I was doing something wrong, or if this was just the way he was.

But learning that others had had babies with exactly the same characteristics as mine was surprisingly…comforting.

At the same time, I felt discouraged and overwhelmed by the realization that Sammy may not grow out of this anytime soon. There was definitely a grieving process that took place over his first year while I came to terms with the fact that his fussiness was, at least in part, early evidence of his temperament.

He needed more stimulation, more entertaining, more holding, more soothing, more flexibility, and more patience than many other babies.

It quickly became evident that he would have a larger-than-life personality: When he smiled — which was surprisingly often — you could see every single one of his teeth. It took very little to make him laugh (and not one of those wimpy giggles either – a full on belly laugh), and he had a way of charming those around him I had rarely seen in any other kid.

See every tooth?

Sam is now 5 years old and started Kindergarten this year. Like many other formerly high-need babies, he is well behaved, makes friends easily, and gives his teachers no problems. At home, he feels very free to express himself at will.

When he was a baby we considered him high needs. Now we call him spirited.

But really, he’s just Sammy, and we wouldn’t change a thing about him.

It frustrates me to no end to have that happen, especially if its for a special dinner that I am planning. There’s nothing like getting ready to cook and pulling your veggies out, only to see that they have already ruined.

I was recently introduced to Clearly Fresh Bags — a new way to keep your veggies and fruit fresh for much longer than normal. We are going to be hosting a giveaway so that you too can try out Clearly Fresh Bags (giveaway info at the bottom of the post).

At first, I have to tell you that I was skeptical, simply because I have used those little green bags at the grocery store that they provide, and the results have pretty much been the same — wilted and rotten veggies. With the Clearly Fresh Bags, I began to see why my veggies were staying crisper longer, and my herbs were not wilting either. They really do work!

About Clearly Fresh Bags

However it has been celebrated in the past, from notes of endearment or small tokens of affection our retail culture has established Valentine’s Day as one of the largest holidays of the year, particularly for candy and flower merchants. If you are looking for ways to enjoy the holiday without going broke, here are a few suggestions to make the holiday special.

Chocolate truffles with a twist

Although the term derives from a type of tuber or fungus that is coveted particularly in France and Italy – I am not referring to a fungus, but a little lump of chocolate. If you have an artisan chocolatier in your area, check out the wonderful variety of truffles being hand crafted today. Each one of these wonderful delicacies can run a dollar or two and have hints of exotic flavorings which include liqueurs, chili peppers, bits of candy and toffee, herbal flavors and even coffee and tea concoctions.

If you have no local chocolate artisans and are planning to send your gifts online this year, give yourself enough lead time to get the orders in so that you don’t have to pay rush charges on shipping.

Make them yourself

Why not try making truffles yourself and hand delivering them? Melt chocolate baking chips with various flavorings, chill, scoop with a melon ball tool, form into a ball and roll in a variety of toppings from crushed nuts to coconut flakes to powdered semisweet chocolate to sea salt to – well you get the idea.

Check out your favorite cookbook or online recipe source. They are surprisingly easy. And for a wonderful container – recycle the grocery store sushi containers. You know the ones – they are decorative with a dark plastic bottom and a clear lid. Tie with a gold ribbon or raffia and a heart shaped tag.

Flowers from the grocery store

Although you may not feel you have time for this extra step this year – try arranging the flowers you give – yourself. Becoming familiar with what type of flowers are available at which stores and planning ahead to decide what colors to give will help direct you to the unique container to use for your bouquet. You local antique mall will provide lots of great containers – from a bait bucket to a cowboy boot (with a simple glass insert). Be creative and you can really impress your closest pals.

There are so many online options

The online options are many from flowers to fruit to nuts and handmade gifts. However you celebrate the day – from an easy online purchased flower or gift – to a crafted with love from your kitchen delight, write a personal note of love or affection and spread some cheer.
Mac OS X has a great built-in address book and a number of useful third-party alternatives, but out of all the options Cobook is our favorite. It's a very new app, currently still in beta, but its intelligent search and social media integration make it very easy to love. More »

It was based on testing they conducted (sample analysis done at Duke University) of foam in a number of baby products. They were looking for flame retardants which can pose health risks, particularly to babies.

The Coaltion found:

Popular baby products, including nursing pillows and car seats, contain toxic flame retardants linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and other health effects...Children and families are exposed to the compounds, called Tris chemicals, when they escape from household items and contaminate house dust and indoor air.

The report, Hidden Hazards In the Nursery, found toxic flame retardants in 85% (17 of 20) of new baby and children’s products tested, including bassinet pads, nursing pillows, changing pads, and car seats. The most prevalent flame retardant found was chlorinated Tris (TDCPP), a chemical voluntarily removed from children’s pajamas in the 1970s when it was found to cause adverse health effects. Chlorinated Tris was present in 80% of the products (16 of 20). California recently classified chlorinated Tris as a carcinogen, and evidence links the chemical to neurotoxicity as well as hormone disruption.

According to the report, nursing pillows and baby carriers were recently exempted from flammability standard requirements.

Of the 20 products tested, two were nursing pillows, both purchased in Washington state at major retailers. One, the My Brest Friend Deluxe, tested positive for TDCPP and TDCP; the other, the Balboa nursing pillow did not. The My Brest Friend website states, "We do not use fire retardants in our foam."

The Baltimore Sun reported that the Boppy nursing pillow is "known to not use Tris flame retardants," and its website states, "The fabric and filling in the Boppy Feeding and Infant Support pillow (and slipcovers for those pillows) meet the requirements without the addition of flame retardant chemicals."

All a little unsettling, no?
