Developer Digital Illusions didn't release the first Battlefield Bad Company game for the PC. Now we think they are regreting that decision because the second game in their first person shooter series, Battlefield Bad Company 2, has gotten a lot of players. How many? According to a post on the game's official message boards, the PC population of players is greater than the Xbox 360 and PS3 player base.

That's pretty good considering that the PC gamer population is supposing to be dying off and moving to the consoles. However there's been some server issues that have cropped up since the game's release earlier this week that the dev team is trying to fix. All in all, Battlefield Bad Company 2 seems to be a big hit, with a blog post stating, " . . . concurrent users in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 surpassed that in Battlefield 2 which has been going strong for almost 5 years."

Betty White might actually make an appearance on Saturday Night Live — a victory for more than 400,000 Facebook users who became fans of a page lobbying Lorne Michaels to offer the comedienne the chance to host an episode.

Entertainment Weekly reports that SNL might soon do a “Women of Comedy” special that would star White alongside younger female luminaries like Molly Shannon, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Sure, the 88-year-old actress wouldn’t actually be hosting a 90-minute episode all by her lonesome, but it’s still a chance for the show to honor her decades of comedic performance on shows like The Golden Girls and Boston Legal.

The Facebook page was started by fan David Mathews on December 29, 2009. As we’re writing this piece, it now has 426,734 fans — 84,141 more than it had when we first wrote about it five days ago.

White wasn’t involved with setting up the page, but when the L.A. Times contacted her about it, she implied that she’d be willing to host if offered the gig.

The “Women of Comedy” episode isn’t exactly what the Facebook group was calling for, but it could still be a great moment for folks who’ve been inspired by White’s work for more than half a century.

The weird sense of duty really good sysadmins have can border on the sociopathic, but it's nice to know that it stands between the forces of darkness and your cat blog's servers.

In its latest, unyielding attempt to subvert societal productivity, 2K Games has announced Sid Meier's Civilization V, the latest entry in the venerable strategy series. Set to debut on PC this Fall, Civilization V brings "an astonishing new engine" to the polite, turn-based proceedings and promises to excel the franchise with "the introduction of hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire." Most hexcellent news indeed.

"Each new version of Civilization presents exciting challenges for our team," said Sid Meier of Sid Meier's Civilization fame. '"Thankfully, ideas on how to bring new and fun experiences to Civ players never seem to stop flowing. From fully animated leaders and realistic landscapes, new combat tactics, expanded diplomacy and shared mods, we're excited for players to see the new vision our team at Firaxis has brought to the series."

And expect to share your vision with others, as 2K notes that Civilization V will feature an "extensive suite" of community, modding and multiplayer components. It just wouldn't be an accurate model of civilization if you couldn't diplomatically destroy your online friends.

In the same way that Summize created a realtime search engine for Twitter, Buzzzy, which just launched, is a realtime search engine for Google Buzz. Though whether it gets aquired, as Summize did by Twitter, remains to be seen. Twitter did not have a search engine. Google Buzz however…

For now it appears (stop me if I’m wrong) to be the first search engine for Google Buzz and the founders plan to launch a search API later in the week.

Twelve of the world’s biggest phone networks – including AT&T, Orange and Telefonica – will announce their rival technology tomorrow to Apple’s App Store. The combined audience for the app platform will be 2 billion customers. Phone manufacturers Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson are also part of the alliance.

The announcement is expected to take place at tomorrow’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, writes the Times, and will be good news for consumers. With the fragmentation of app stores from Apple, Android and others, many handsets and operators will now support a single standard of apps that work across multiple devices.

There’s no word if there will be a single app store, but a single standard for apps on devices from multiple networks is expected. It’s also unclear if the technology itself will be unveiled tomorrow — we may simply see a statement of intent.
