dell-adamo-xps

From a design and engineering standpoint, I’m totally wowed by Dell’s Adamo XPS. And after watching this Gotta Be Mobile inkshow of the device, I’m even more impressed. How did Dell cram an entire computer in such a thin product, I keep asking myself. It’s definitely a “head-turner,” if that’s what you’re looking for. But once the novelty wears off, I question how useful the $1,799 device will be while mobile.

You can see in the video that the standard battery only has 20 Whr of power, which Dell estimates will offer 2.5 hours of use. The device design worries me as well — how will the unit work on a lap based on the unique hinge that props the keyboard up at an angle? At this price, it’s not likely I’ll ever know the answer to that question firsthand, so I may watch the video a second time. ;)

As a refresher, the base Adamo XPS offers the following specs:

  • 13.4” HD WLED 720p display powered by integrated Intel graphics
  • Intel Core 2 Duo ULV (1.4GHz)
  • 4GB DDR3‐800MHz
  • 128 GB Solid State Disk
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1
  • Ports: DisplayPort, 2xUSB 2.0, audio, Ethernet via dongle
  • Weight: 3.2lb (1.44kg with 20Whr battery)
  • dimensions: 340 x 273.9 x 9.99 mm
  • Windows 7 Premium 64‐bit

Slacker will stop building its only hardware digital streaming music player, the G2 in the second half of 2010, according to a Wednesday WSJ report. The 2GB device was launched in 2007 and grew to include 4GB and 8GB capacities. Slacker is still selling a 4GB version for $129, while Best Buy has some 8GB models in stock, priced at $249....

Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer today provided a handful of minor revelations for his company's strategy in an interview today. In his discussion with Engadget, the executive has now all but confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 will "come hard" with elements of the Zune interface; previously, the company had only made indirect allusions to the software appearing in a future update. Most anticipate the release moving the phone OS towards a more touch-friendly platform as well as to give it stronger media playback....

Bose Wave SoundLink, the too-expensive, yet pretty OK looking wireless music system by the "too expensive, yet pretty OK looking" consumer electronics people over at Bose, has gone from rumor to reality as of today. Expect to pay $599.90 for the whole McGillicuddy or -- if you've already bought into the Bose Wave thing -- pick up that SoundLink upgrade kit featuring a USB Bluetooth dongle for a mere $149.95. A steal at a fraction of the price! PR after the break.

Of course plenty of folks have Windows 7 running in Boot Camp just fine, but if you're one of those crazies that goes in for Apple's seal of approval you'll have to wait a little bit. The official support is coming "before the end of the year" to Snow Leopard and will obviously require an update to the Boot Camp software. Unfortunately, Apple's excluded a lot of its 2006 Intel-based computers from this forthcoming update, and we're getting the vibe that this is a Snow Leopard-only affair. Basically, par for the Apple course.

Software scalability has been a big issue recently.  While modern servers are incredibly fast, many software solutions simply are not able to take advantage of it.  There are many reasons for this.  Some are easy to address and some require changes to the software.  Intel performance engineer and Oracle WebLogic performance engineer will jointly give a talk at Oracle OpenWorld on this topic.

Here is the session information:

ID#: S309892

Title: Ten Ways to Improve J2EE Application Performance on Multi-Core Systems

Track: Oracle Develop: Enterprise Java and Oracle WebLogic

Date: 13-OCT-09

Time: 17:30 - 18:30

Venue: Hilton Hotel, Room: Yosemite B

Here is the abstract:

The current economic environment and the new focus on being green demand greater efficiency from every IT shop, big and small alike. In this session, you will learn how to improve Java application scalability by using Oracle WebLogic Server on the latest multi-core systems. It examines various software and hardware features for getting the best performance out of your applications. In particular, it explores the pros and cons of 32-bit versus 64-bit environments and how having multiple Java virtual machine instances can reduce heap pressure and improve cache locality. It also discusses operating system and hardware features such as large pages and solid-state drives and their impacts on J2EE application performance.

As a bonus, we will be giving away a Netbook at the end of the talk.

We also wrote a technical paper on the topics that will be covered in this talk.  You can find this technical paper at http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/java-application-server-optimization-for-multi-core-systems/ .

HTC-HD2_car_holder_1002-640x472

One of the most interesting features of the HTC HD2 wont be in the box.  The HTC HD2 car kit brings a stylish element to what is usually a pretty utilitarian gadget, and strongly  suggests  a use for the device which would justify the huge expanse of the screen beyond simply browsing the web.

htc_hd2_slashgear_hands-on_18 htc_hd2_slashgear_hands-on_24

The car kit consists of a suction cup with attached Gooseneck Device Holder and microUSB socket, a custom battery cover with what appears to be a sturdy attachment and charging port and an actual cigarette lighter car charger which ends in a microUSB port. The battery cover appears in addition to have a latch of unknown function.

The suction cup is said to be designed to attach to most surfaces of the interior, from a curvy dashboard to a smooth windshield. HTC has said the device will automatically detect being placed in the car kit and then launch the Navipanel  front end, seen above, which will give the user quick access to navigation features like Home or Address, and also to the Footprints photo geotagging app.

HTC-HD2_car_holder_back_1002At present we do not know if navigation software will be bundled with the HD2, and which GPS app the front end will integrate with, but on the HTC Touch Cruise it was CoPilot Live which did the job.

Interestingly with the confirmed USB host feature, which is said to support a keyboard, this set-up could easily do as a makeshift screen stand for a tiny iMac-type computer or alternatively as a rather expensive charging dock

Expansys is selling the car kit for £65.99 here.

This should come as very little surprise to, well, anyone, but Motorola is out of the Windows Mobile game for a while. Phonescoop's Eric Zeman is reporting on a roundtable discussion with the Moto gang:

When asked directly, Motorola's Christy Wyatt said that Motorola is waiting for the next generation of platform software from Microsoft before it will begin making Windows Mobile devices again. It will not be adopting nor making any devices running Windows Phone 6.5.

So there you have it, folks. Don't expect to see anything new from Motorola until Windows Mobile 7, if not later.

samsung-omnia-2-windows-phone
