Voll praktisch. GMail Backup vollaudomaddisch.

I have been using MailStore Home for some time to backup and archive my Thunderbird email databases (see Use MailStore To Backup Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Emails and How To Speed Up Thunderbird By Archiving Emails).

The developers of this excellent free email backup software have just released version 5 which is more of a bug fixing release than one with many new features. The software’s functionality remained mostly unchanged. It is still possible to backup and archive email accounts both online and software based, to search and filter those emails, migrate emails into other applications and even restore emails. Some new features deserve mentioning.

One of the nicest options that has been added to MailStore Home 5 is the ability to “install” a portable copy of MailStore Home on a computer system. This makes it possible to use the software on USB flash drives and other external devices or discs.

Another rather apparent change is the new user interface which gives the program a modern cleaner look. Here are two screenshots, the first showing the new interface, the second the old one.

The developers have added an auto configuration feature to the email backup and archiving software. The program tries to automatically detect settings based on the email address entered. This works well for known providers such as Google Mail, Yahoo Mail and others. Manual configuration options are available in case the mail server settings are detected incorrectly.

The last new feature is the ability to run multiple archiving tasks at the same time. Before it was only possible to run one archiving task at a time which limited the software quite a bit, especially for users with multiple email accounts.

The addition of a portable version of MailStore Home is without doubt the most promising new feature of the program.

Windows users can download Mailstore Home 5 from the developer website. the program is compatible with all Windows based operating systems from Windows 2000 on. (via)

Funktioniert! Maps ist deutlich schneller!

Sometimes when you look locations and places up on Google Maps you will notice delays before the tiles appear in the web browser that you are using to access the service. The Google Maps Team has just released a new Chrome Experiment that makes use of latest browser technologies to provide a better more seamless experience.

According to the team, MapsGL “is one of the first large scale applications to be built on top of WebGL” that uses “3D rendering and hardware graphics acceleration” for a seamless, smooth and direct experience in the web browser.

Web users need to visit the Chrome Experiments website to launch the experiment from there. Once done, and provided that the web browser is supporting the technologies used by the experiment, they will notice rendering speed improvements on Google Maps.

MapsGl changes the way how maps and images tiles are rendered both on the server and client side. Previously it was the server that had to pre-render the image tiles before they were sent to the client. With the new technology vector data “for the map is sent to the browser” and rendered there on the fly.

mapsgl

The effect here is that less data needs to be transferred from the Google Maps server to the client PC. The new technology enhances image transitions in Maps by “loading 3D metadata along with image tiles” to enable rich 3D transitions between “different levels and angles of imagery”.

MapsGL requires graphics card that can run WebGL content. Google will automatically block the experiment in cases where the graphics card does not support the technology. The developers note furthermore that MapsGL will fall back on a hybrid approach if the graphics card has poor performance on some operations. This would mean that Google Maps would use pre-rendered raster tiles for the background and only dynamically rendered labels on top of these.

The MapsGL technology should work in many modern web browsers including Google Chrome and the Firefox web browser. Have you played around with the experiment yet? Let me know what you think of it in the comments.

Do you want to play Android games but don’t have an Android phone? BlueStacks is an Android app player for Windows that can run any type of Android app in full screen mode without encountering any performance or compatibility related issues. It features 10 pre-loaded apps along with an option to add custom apps. You can either download new apps from the BlueStacks Channel or push your favorite apps from your Android phone to your PC via BlueStacks Cloud Connect.

After installation, you will find a gadget on the top-right corner of your screen. Clicking the gadget will extend an App Tray.

Bluestacks App Tray

When you run an app, the application will automatically go into full screen mode.

At the bottom, you have Menu, Rotate, Zoom and All Apps buttons in the center with app navigation and close buttons at either side. The Zoom button switches between full-screen and standard view modes. Clicking the All Apps button will show the BlueStacks gadget with the App Tray.

You can download additional Android apps from BlueStacks Channels. Click Get More Apps in the widget app tray. Upon the first visit, you need to login with your Facebook account. Once logged in, you can choose and install an app by clicking the Subscribe button under it.

A great feature of this application is that you can push the apps from your Android device to your PC by using the BlueStacks Cloud Connect option. To use BlueStacks Cloud Connect, you must first install the BlueStacks Cloud Connect app on your phone from the Android Market.

BlueStacks-Sync For Android

Once done, open the Cloud Connect page on your PC’s browser to receive a Phone PIN. Open the app on your phone, enter the PIN and tap OK. You should now be able to see a list of all your apps inside BlueStacks Cloud Connect. Check the app that you want to push to your PC and tap Sync.

You might have to wait for some time for the apps to sync with your PC. When the syncing process is completed, you can run all your Android device’s apps on your PC.

There was a lot of hype surrounding BlueStacks when it was first announced and truth be told, even though it is in alpha stage as of now, the application far exceeds expectations. It runs Android apps with little or no lag at all and provides its own medium for transfer of apps from device to PC. It does have its limitations, though. For instance, you cannot use apps or play games that are dependent on multi-touch – an issue that might be resolved in future updates.

Only the free version of BlueStacks is available at the moment and it has a maximum limit of 26 downloadable apps (excluding the 10 pre-loaded apps). The application works on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It took Microsoft long enough, but they've finally (FINALLY!) changed the blue screen of death to be something a little more friendly and a little less scary.
