Big wall vets swear by Ovals since their smooth, uniform shape reduces carabiner "shift" when easing onto sketchy placements. Even if you're not gearing up for the Captain, your rack should include some Ovals because they are great for racking gear, clipping funky old bolt ...

  • Solid Workhorse Carabiner
    By Curtis - May 12, 2014 - Campmor
    Pros: Durable; Workhorse For Aid

Cons: Not As Light As Wire Gate

I've used this carabiner since it was built as Chouinard equipment and finally, after ~20+years decided I should play it safe and retire the Chouinards to my old gear bin. Not because they showed any flaws, but because, I had to face it, 20+ years is too long to trust any material with my life.
This is my go to standard carabiner for aid climbing, racking of pitons, ice screws, and other gear. In one quantity or another, they are almost always on my rack. Proven oval shape reduces carabiner shift (or pop) when stepping up in aiders. A must have carabiner. Not as light as the BD wire gate oval so I now have both on my big wall rack. With 70 or so carabiners on a wall rack, the difference in weight really adds up. I'll see how the wire gates handle the abuse before I completely convert to them. Read full review

  • Good Biner
    By SVMoto - April 25, 2013 - REI
Pros: Quick to open; Cost; Simple

    Cons: Heavy

Solid biner for achor building or for use on slacklines. A little on the heavy side to fill your rack out with. I usually have two of these on me for various uses. Can't beat the price. Read full review

  • Nice and light
    By Japanskier - November 20, 2013 - REI
    Pros: Simple; inexpensive; Light

These carabiners are great for racking gear. They are pretty light and nicely priced. As the description says, they are a "fine all-around choice". Read full review
