  • Exactly as described
    By Anonymous - August 13, 2013 - Newegg.com
Pros: Does exactly as it says. Opened box, hooked it up, worked flawlessly. Have only used 3.5" drives, but I'm assuming that 2.5" ones would work just as well. Convenient, easy to use. Hot swappable.

    Cons: none.

Had my other computer go down, used this to transfer files from the system drive. Works great. Read full review

  • Great external readers.

Pros: Easy to use, just like a toaster. Works. Relatively inexpensive.

Cons: USB only, so not the fastest. But compatible with everything, so I shouldn't complain.

I have two on my desk connected full-time. I have used a bunch of different 2.5" and 3.5" drives in them with no issues. I just ordered two more. Why bother with enclosures that require screws? Let the drives stay cool by being exposed to air. Read full review

  • Garbage !!!!
    By OldShooter - May 4, 2014 - Newegg.com
    Pros: Cheap

Cons: Manufacturer admits it doesn't work.

At the end of March 2014, I bought a Startech single-socket USB Dock. The advertising for the dock said the following:

"This external hard drive dock adapter functions as a SATA HDD docking station - providing full, instant access to any 2.5in or 3.5in SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) hard drive ... Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB 3.5" and 1TB 2.5" drives) can be used to greatly enhance your computer's storage/backup capabilities."

This is how Startech reacted when the dock did not work:

6:41 PM Startech: Thank you for contacting StarTech.com. How may I help you?

6:41 PM Victim: I have a new 3TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 drive. I have it plugged into a Startech SATADOCKU2 SATA->USB adapter. My Synology DS212 NAS box reports its size as 734.8GB and my Win 7 64 bit computer reports it as 746.51GB. Seagate [tech support] says: "A large capacity drive showing 746.51GB is a common issue when it does not have the needed driver support. This can sometimes occur when connected with SATA to an older motherboard that needs an update, but is most common when connected with a third party dock or enclosure. I recommend seeing if there are any driver updates for your dock available on the manufacturer's website."
    ...
6:43 PM Startech: Right - this is one of our older docking stations, which is why you are probably getting that slight discrepency ...
    ...
6:44 PM Victim: It's not a "slight discrepancy." I can only use 1/4 of the drive. The drive has already been reformatted NTFS. Can you replace this unit with one that works?
    ...
6:59 PM Startech: Just looking at our options here, I am aware of no way to make this work with an advanced format drive.

7:00 PM Victim: Fine. Just replace it with a box that does work. [You said] "Newer docks are built to work with Advanced Formatting"

7:00 PM Startech: I am afraid we cannot do that.

7:00 PM Victim: Because you don't have a product that works?

7:01 PM Startech: Oh, we do - like this:
    7:01 PM http://www.startech.com/HDD/Docking/SATA-Hard-Drive-Docking-Station-eSATA-USB-3-to-SATA-HDD-Dock~SATDOCKU3E

7:01 PM Victim: OK. Send me one and give me and RMA for the defective box that I have.

7:01 PM Startech: You unit is not defective.

7:02 PM I am afraid we cannot give you an RMA for a unit that is working to it's specification, I apologize for this.

7:03 PM Victim: Not defective ?!!?!?!?!? It doesn't do what its data sheet says it will do. What is your definition of "defective?"

7:04 PM Startech: The unit is reading and writing to the drive, however not allowing you to see it's full capacity, this is an issue caused by advanced formatted drives. I am afraid we cannot do an RMA on this unit.
    ...
7:06 PM Victim: Please escalate this.

No escalation of course. Startech's message to customer: "Pound sand!" Read full review
