Google Chrome is a free web browser that is fast and easy to use, while keeping you safe on the Web. It is currently available for Windows (XP and Vista), Mac OS X, and Linux.
Windows instructions
To install Google Chrome for your user account, follow these steps below:
- Visit http://www.google.com/chrome
- Click Download Google Chrome. Downloading the installer file from this location ensures that you'll be able to get updates, security fixes, and access to all of Google Chrome's features.
- Review the Terms of Service, then click Accept and Install to continue. You can opt to send Google crash reports and statistics on how often you use Google Chrome features by selecting the checkbox at the bottom. Google Chrome doesn't send personal information, such as name, email address, or Google Account information.
- Once the installation finishes, the Welcome to Google Chrome dialog box appears. Click Start Google Chrome to finish the default installation or click Customize these settings to customize your installation.
If you click Start Google Chrome, the browser automatically finishes the installation process by importing your bookmarks, home page, browsing history, and saved passwords from your current default browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer, for Windows and Linux; Safari for Mac). It also adds Google Chrome shortcuts to your computer desktop and menus.
You can always import your browser information at a later time.
Customized installation options
Customize the way that Google Chrome imports your information from other browsers and how Google Chrome shortcuts should be created. You can also choose whether or not you want to make Google Chrome your default browser.
- Importing
- If you don't want to import browser information, such as your bookmarks, home page, browsing history, and saved passwords, at this point, deselect the 'Import settings from' checkbox.
- To import information from a different browser, select the "Import settings from" checkbox and use the menu to select either Internet Explorer or Firefox.
- Default browser
The "Make Google Chrome the default browser" checkbox is selected automatically. If you'd rather use another browser to open links by default, deselect the checkbox. - Shortcuts
Icons that launch Google Chrome can be created and placed on your computer desktop, Start menu, and Quick Launch bar. Deselect checkboxes for locations where you don't want shortcuts to appear. After you've finished customizing your installation options, click OK.
- Importing
Google Chrome opens automatically after the importing process completes.

Mac instructions
- Visit http://www.google.com/chrome
- Click Download Google Chrome.
- Review the Terms of Service, then click Accept and Install to continue.
- Open the file called "Google Chrome.dmg."
- In the Google Chrome window that opens, drag the Google Chrome icon to the Application folder below. This installs Google Chrome for all user accounts on your computer.
If you don't have administrative rights, drag the icon to a location on your computer where you have rights, such as the Desktop, instead of the Applications folder. Google Chrome will only be installed for your user account.
The first time you open the browser, the Finder will ask you to confirm that you want to open the application downloaded from the Internet. Click Open to continue. - Unmount the Google Chrome disk image
on your desktop, by dragging its icon to the Eject icon in the Dock. Make sure you're dragging the disk image, not the Google Chrome application icon.
Linux instructions
While Google Chrome itself can be copied to a local user directory and will run correctly without adminstrative privileges, we recommend that proper installation and updates be performed using a full installation via the native package management system. In order to do this, you should have administrative access during installation.
- Visit http://www.google.com/chrome
- Click Download Google Chrome.
- Review the Terms of Service, then click Accept and Install to continue.
- Click OK to open the package.
- Click Install Package.
- Once the installation finishes, click Close.
To open the browser, go to Applications > Internet > Google Chrome. Google Chrome will add its repository to your package manager so that it can be kept up-to-date.
If you already have the Dev version of the browser installed, you may need to uninstall the browser before installing the Beta version.
Be sure to check out the Getting Started Guide to learn more about its features. Enjoy!
