Along with the recent upgrade it appears that google maps no longer allows off road coordinates. When I enter the coords using long/lat, I am taken to the nearest road. Is there a way to turn this function off in order to resume geocaching?

Hi. I'm very interested to find out the answer for this. I can't seem to get off-road coordinates for geocaching! I spent 1hr today trying to find a cache not realizing that google maps was taking me to the nearest road location.
I have this problem as well, seems to have happened a few days ago. Google maps (Non-mobile) seems to have changed as well, and whilst it still puts an arrow on the requested co-ordinates, it also highlights the closest road etc. Not good!!!
This also cost me an hour whilst searching for a multi-cache in the UK, couldn't find it 'cause gmm was sending me to the nearest road, not the requested co-ordinates. It was fine last week! Help please!!!
I to had the same problem ............. but then i would as you don't seem to have the ability to turn if off!!
All the developers must drive cars, not 4x4 at that.
What about us walkers and cyclist who don't use roads all the time?
It has also screwed up a great pastime of geocaching :(
I'm off to find a better way, the Google way of life is getting harder to swallow, day by they seem to slow things down just for the sake of change and not progress, Google Chrome is another example 6 months it's was great .... Now even slower and crashes more than explorer.
If any one has found a way to roll back to the previous version of ggm I'd love to here from you as others would to :)
I've found a way around the new google maps mobile
A bit long winded but hey it works :)
1, enter your Lat/lon as normal 2, save as a favourite 3, edit the favourite with the original lat/lon
It then shows the real location with the star and the estimated road with an arrow.
hopefully this works on all phones not just the nokia 5800 i've got ;)
I can only edit the favourite name, not the co-ordinates :(
Samsung i900
doesn't work for me either. Blackberry 8800

Hi all,
I've checked with a few teammates, and they've informed me that we've made slight adjustments to our search algorithm: In order to pinpoint a location on a map, please use the prefix "loc:" in the search bar before entering in the lat/long. For example, the search "loc:37.425866,-122.085743" will drop a pin directly on the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA, USA.
Please let me know if you're still having trouble with this new method.
Best, Tom
Cheers Thom, this works for me :)
Thanks for looking into it!!!
Works great ... thanks for the update.
FYI ... to those of you using Google Maps Mobile for Geocaching, you should also check out "RichesseGPS" for windows mobile. It will import ".GPX" files from geocaching.com and export ".kml" files which when you click on them will open in Google Maps Mobile. This is what I was using as a workaround until Thom's response. It also give you the standard compass interface which is usefull in spots where your data connection is not available and you only have GPS to go from.
Thank you SOOOO much Thom! You totally rock! It was driving me crazy lol.
Christine
I am grateful for Thom's solution, but it comes at the cost of convenience.
I use the Geocaching app on my iPhone 3G. When I select "View on External Map" and am taken to the Google Maps app, I don't want to have to manually edit the coordinates with each and every search, especially since I previously didn't have to. Isn't there a setting somewhere that will enable us to roll back to allowing off-road coordinates? Or even allow us to see both markers (the coordinates requested and the nearest address), as the web version does?
For that matter, what purpose could this change possibly serve? Why would Google Maps become less functional, returning a result less specific than the one the user asked for?
Any further help would be greatly appreciated.
This is not working on my iphone 3GS. I need this for field investigations on wild animals so it's very important that I get to the exact lat/longs I enter. PLEASE HELP
