Same here. Having problems on and off since this morning. What's worse, since my contacts were synced to Google, all of them vanished as well.

Same here - in the UK. works fine through webmail or Google Notifier.
I have the same issue starting today. Device: iPhone 2G Carrier: T-mobile (but I get the same error on Wi-Fi) Country / Language: English OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): 3.1
I am having the same issue can't send mail vie the exchange system either. Is this wide spread?
Same problem. Google sync via M$ Exchange doesn't seem to work since this morning. In Chicago.
Started happening here too.... iPhone 3g 3.1.2 in the UK. swapped back to IMAP for mail for now!
I'm also have this issue.
In Southern California, on an iPhone 3GS with 3.1 on AT&T.
Same here. Portland, OR. 3GS with 3.1.
Argh.. same issue here in Seattle. Please fix it, google...
Same here in UK iPhone 3gs 3.1.2, sooooo annoying :(, come on google, get it fixed.
Same here,
Los Angeles 3.1.2 ATT Since this morning Gmail is really annoying me lately with the outages and all this BS. And specially theis silence about tech issues!!!
Hi everyone,
We know this is happening and will have it fixed shortly - sorry about this and thanks for your patience!
Douglas
I like that we have a reply from google (douglasG). I still wonder how wide spread this is. Is it a MICROSOFT issue or is it a Google thing. There are NO (except mine) questions regarding this on apples help forums. Remember that Microsoft is STILL having problems with the T-Mobile / Danger device. I would hate to see this happen to us. I know it cant since our data is safe on Google servers. but AS END USERS SHOULD WE BE RESPONSIBLE END USERS AND BACKUP OUR OWN DATA ON LOCAL SERVERS OR usb keys on a regular basis? I think so. Yaesumofo
This is affetcing windows mobile users too, correct?
Mine's started working again. Cheers Google fellas :)

This affected a subset of users on both iPhone/iPod and Windows Mobile - and for yaesumofo this was our issue - but it should be working again now. Sorry about this everyone.

Still not working...
After seeing this message, I restarted my iPhone and the mail (seems to be) back. Whew! Thank you Google-people for fixing this. Now, if we could only have a bit more information on what happened and why, I'd be a much happier camper.
I deleted my Exchange account and am trying to put it back in...it will allow calendar and contacts, but not my Gmail?? Anyone with thoughts on this?
It's working again in Los Angeles, I would suggest to google to add a status for the exchange service in their google status pages, that way people don't freak out so much, and maybe wait until the issue is solved. jslanger, I would just wait, it will work again, like it did on mine, and some other people.
Just allowed me to re-add the Exchange account. Very odd. Is this all on Google's side? B/c this happened a little while ago too.
Sadly this still doesn't work for me ... Has been down for a few hours now.
my Mail Folders in the exchange account are back on the iPhone, push is working but with about a 10 minute delay - this is in Los Angeles
Works again
Excellent point KJD108 - I definitely could use an exchange service status if only to know what to do when it doesn't work, wait for Google to fix it or really start freaking out.
I will say that this is good service. My push/email/send/receive/calendar/contacts are all back and working. I am not crazy about the idea that the system is not completely stable.
I am sure that Google is not interested in a google version of the Microsoft T-Mobile/danger data loss which is happening now.
Since the google service is FREE there is no real guarantee that our data will be safe forever. IMHO it would be a good idea for google to create an application which allows end users to create a backup of all critical data and save it to a LOCAL USB type key. this would allow for restoration as well in case of a castrophic failure of google servers. The data can be encryped for safety. I for one would love to have a single safe backup of all google data. At the moment I have 4 gig of data on the google servers (that is a hell of a lot of emails) Having a local backup which I refresh monthly would be a good idea. Remember when google first started storage and memory in general was a premium. Now it isn't. a 8 gig key costs like $15.00. A very inexpensive backup. Great work fixing the problem. If possible can you reassure us? I would like to know (within reason) the cause and effect of the issue. How many end users were effected. and is it likley yo happen again. Thank you. Yaesumofo
ActiveSync still isn't pushing for me. I get updated messages/appointments but only when I trigger a refresh by opening the email app (or calendar app).

Like many others, mine worked fine when I first initiated the ActiveSync for Gmail. I had been using ActiveSync for Calendars, successfully, for quite some time. Several days back it came to a halt almost completely. I cannot even manually initiate downloads of my email. I have even noticed some syncing issues with Calendar. I have tried my Corporate Exchange account and push notification for mail worked perfectly. Yet no go on Gmail.
How did I get so lucky to fall into the 'unique' subset of users. :) I appreciate the responses and updates by Google Staff that have been posted here. I will be patient and just keep watching and waiting.
I do have a question. Can I install Gmail IMAP and have Gmail ActiveSync through Exchange both installed and running on the same iPhone at the same time? At least I still receive my messages with Fetch on IMAP. Or will there be a problem with ActiveSync to have them both installed at the same time?
Hey everyone,
We just had another spike that might have caused you to be unable to get new mail in the last half hour or so - I'm sorting it out as we speak, and we should be fully sorted again very shortly.
Douglas
The last email on my iPhone is from 5:43 PM, since then I have received at least 10-15 additional emails that will not sync to my phone no matter what I do.
iPhone 3GS, AT&T, 3.1.2...
Still not working here:
Lancaster, Pa T-Mobile (and wifi) Windows Mobile Smartphone
Same issues on both iPod touch 2g and my htc touch pro 2. Also wondering why several times a week the devices refuse to sync due to a change on the server and can only be corrected by removing the sync items then re-checking them for sync.
Too quirky to use seriously still. Why should there be legions of happy Blackberry users with instant push email and the sleeker more able Iphone be hobbled by problems of server implementation. Should I shell out dough for mobile me or just be happy with IMAP and 15 min fetch?
The issue has not been fixed yet - iPhone error message "The connection to the server failed" Time: 5:12am GMT 13 Oct 2009
not for me either....10:17pm in LA.....with iPhone 3GS
I experienced a breif spatt yesterday in which Push was working again
on my iPhone, but this morning it appears to once again be broken.
No
biggy. I'm happy to wait until Google get this working properly. Doubt
it will be more then a week or two.
For a free service, it does
better then quite a few pay for services. :-)
Mine's still not working either for the most part. Actually if it helps to give some details, some emails headers are getting pushed to the phone, but then I still get the server error whenever I open Mail and it can't sync.
Is this related to the issue where certain folders (e.g. The sent folder) never update? My iPhone sent folder still looks exactly the same as when I first added the account although sent mails can be seen in both 'all mail' and the web interface.
Just got back Gmail Folders and Calendar is now working. No Contacts & no emails can be sent or received yet. Obviously guys are still working on it
Is here any announcement coming from google that they have push gmail problem?
The problem still persists (Stockholm, 8.39 AM, October 13). No connection to the e-mail server.
Same problem here. I've lost all my contacts / mail / calendar. They are still on gmail / google though, so I assume once Google fix thier server they will return.
I keep removing and re-adding the exchange sync, but each time it comes up with a failure :(
Same problem here hopefully it's resolved sooner rather than later anyone heard any updates??
Hi everyone
Push worked again last night, but mails seems to be taking quite a long time to be pushed to my iphone. Is this related to the issue we experienced yesterday?
Yes, this is related to yesterday's issue, which is that we have less resources than usual due to required maintenance work combined with a large traffic spike - we're dealing much better with it now, but we know we're still slow for some users. We've also got some upgrades in the pipeline that should stop this from happening again.
I'll post again when I know we're completely back to normal, and again we're very sorry about this.
I Still don't get any email on my iphone, since yesterday morning, so it's being more than 24 hours without it!
Sounds good DouglasG - but I wouldnt say my email sync is slow (Windows Mobile) its simply still not working.
I get very strange behaviour, it notifies me of new email pretty late and then I can only see the title of the new email, it won't download the body of them until I try 2 or 3 times.
I've also experienced some problems when I mark items as read/unread, it just doesn't synch properly with gmail.
Devide: iPhone 3GS 3.1
i'm just glad someone from google finally acknowledged the problem. hopefully it will be fixed soon.
My Exchange account was working briefly last night, but this AM it went back to what was happening yesterday. What's odd is that occasional emails come through. Any word on repairs?
glad im not alone here! still waiting though...
Hi again all,
We've a new version out now, as well as more capacity, so it should be looking much better now. If you're still having difficulties now, could you let us know, and post your device make and model as well as how far you're getting?
Thanks,

DouglasG, you said you are using a new version now. do we have to change anything on our end?
Still not working. Still getting the error msg on my Iphone, "Cannot Get Mail, The connection to the server failed". I've deleted and re-created my Gmail account several times. It is now 1:24PM on October 13, California time. It has been working off and on all day yesterday and today!
Mine has been working off and on all day yesterday and today. Everytime I check my mail I am getting the error msg on my Iphone, "Cannot Get Mail, The connection to the server failed". 3G running os 3.1.2
DouglasG, thank you for the continued follow-up on this topic.
About the time you posted this morning that a new version was online, I received emails within 5 seconds or less for about 15 minutes. Which for me is only about 3 emails.
Then it slowed to where I had to open the Mail app to get it to download. However, it stopped around 1pm Mountain DST in the USA. I have two unread test emails that are sitting in my Gmail inbox that still have not been picked up. Currently it is @ 2:50pm Mountain DST.
Any thoughts? I believe someone else asked this, but is there anything we need to do on our side?
Thanks again for all your help.

still not working for me, seemed to improve for a while yesterday (started getting new emails only 1 - 2 hours late), but now back to rare updates if any.
still not working for me in manchester (UK) as above, was working sporadically but not anymore. iphone 3g o2 UK
Still not working for me. Calendars/Contacts pushing just fine. Mail is very slow, and I get a "new mail" notification (e.g., vibrate) many minutes before I'm able to see the actual message. Often can't even check mail.
Iphone 3GS 3.1, AT&T in US.
We use Google Apps. My co-workers sync works perfectly but mine does not. I have an iPhone. 3.1.2 in Oakland CA. It actually worked the 1st two weeks than nothing. I have deleted and added the account. I have wiped the phone, use both 3G and wifi.
I'd stayed away from posting because my mail started working again last week and I didn't want to jinx it. However, everyday this week around the middle of the day it stops working. It usually picks up again later in the afternoon, but I'm curious what's going on. I saw that some more upgrades were put in place yesterday that were supposed to have fixed this, but it doesn't seem like it has.
My phone is sitting here showing that there are 3 unread messages, when that isn't the case. Manual sync doesn't even work. Is this something I will have to live with everyday when the demand is high?
My experience is just about the same as skaeight. My push seems to work well early and late in the day, but during the middle of the day, it's either very slow or doesn't work at all. This seems to be affecting both email and my calendar. I'm not sure about contacts, because I haven;t made any changes lately, but I would guess that it affects contacts as well.
Not working for me. Using Google Apps. Inbox is set to push, but not getting any emails for the past 24 hours or so. Manually refreshing/syncing the inbox does nothing. However, manually refreshing any other folder/label works.
I'm using an iPhone 3G on 3.1, in Toronto, Canada.
DouglasG, when can we expect this to be resolved?
Thanks.
I've continually been having issues similar to skaeight as well for about two weeks. It's completely unreliable at this point and I have to manually check my mail on a PC because I have no idea by looking at my phone if it's current or not, which it usually is not.

Still a problem on my 3g in central Ohio. I check GMail on the computer, and I've got a lot of messages. Check my phone - nothing. It is KILLING my battery as well. I get lucky if it lasts 75% of the day before it dies.
I don't mean to cause any panic but has anyone else noticed any old saved emails missing? I switched to IMAP on the iPhone & started using the desktop instead, because of the problems with push like everyone else & when I tried locating an old email (5 days old) that I moved to a folder/label, I was unable to find it. That prompted me to look for other old emaIls & noticed others missing As well (albeit random ones). Does anyone else have this issue?
Not working for me. iPhone 2G running 3.0. I'm in Vancouver, BC and carrier is Rogers. It says it's connecting and the time stamp changes to the current one but no mail is downloaded.
Same issues as many users above. ActiveSync worked beautifully for about a week after some initial difficulties due to high volume in the first few days after the service started. Now, it seems that updates to my inbox performed on my iPhone push to the server nearly instantly, but essentially nothing comes in to the iPhone, and it spends a huge amount of time "Connecting..." and spinning its wheels, killing the battery. Nothing pushes through, and the inbox shows messages that have long been removed on the server. I have reverted to IMAP and deleted the ActiveSync account. iPhone 3GS, software version 3.1.2 AT&T version 5.6 is the carrier Located in Philadelphia, PA
My push messages are working fine on my 16 GB iPhone 3GS. The problem I'm having is that my old emails are not showing up in my inbox at all. I have my Mail set to No Limit, but it appears it only gets messages from a week back. Any suggestions?
Just a note: I'm running iPhone 3.1.2 with carrier version 5.6...
Ehhh.. i thought thats my iphone's problem but it seems not. Well. i guess i should be happy :)
But lets get back to topic. Gmail Push not working for me either - at least 24h or more.
Details: iPhone 3G 16GB 3.1.2 (no jailbreak, no simlock), from polish Era operator.
Hi again all,
These current issues aren't anything to do with traffic, as we're now running happily. What I suspect is happening is that you've got one or more emails that the sync server is failing to parse, which means we can't send it to the phone in ActiveSync format. That would explain sync not working and your battery draining, as iPhones will try repeatedly to get the broken message. We're aware of a couple of ways in which a message can be broken and cause this, and we'll have fixes out for those ASAP (and of course I'll post again when we do); in the mean time, I'd recommend either temporarily switching to IMAP, or else moving everything out of the label you're syncing (and maybe into a new label so you can easily move them back), which should mean new messages will now come through.
Douglas
Dear DouglasG,
I am still having this same problem.... Please check if this is indeed fixed for all users ?
iphone 3G, 3.1.2 ATT
It's working for me this morning! Keeping my fingers crossed that it will last. Will post again if it stops.
Thanks Douglas.
Right after reading the last Douglass answer, it started working again for me too
@DouglasG: Appears to be working as of this AM. I also did maintenance to my GMail account by deleting all unnecessary/junk email. I did notice my calendars weren't automatically syncing until I removed/added back and now its all working okay. Push is working. Calendar Sync is also working. Thank you!
Device: iPhone 3G S Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2
Push has not worked for my gmail since it was offered. E-mails that are "starred" prior to activating push will not show up on the iphone. E-mail messages never arrive unless i open the mail app and manually refresh the settings. I have it setup exactly the same as a friend with a 3G and his push works fine, seems to be either my account or the 3G S.
On a side note, calendar seems to push fine.
deleted all mail in my account and still not working.. gmail notifier works a treat on my laptop, but iphone just doesnt want to recieve messages. cant even manually retrieve anymore.
Device: iPhone 3G S Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2
Worked this morning for about 3-4 emails, havent received one since around 10am eastern. Between 10am I have received 15 emails and a calendar invite, none of which are on my iPhone.....
I was excited cause I thought it was finally working! :(
@PatrickVaughn: Try removing/adding the Sync source once again (I only have mail and calendars sync'ed...not contacts) and then rebooting/recycling your phone. After I did this, rebooted and THEN opened mail/closed mail one time (to initiate sync), try sending an email to the 3GS...it worked perfectly (for right now at least) for me....Good Luck!
Could any of these issues have ANYTHING to do with using a desktop mail client?
I use Apple's Mail.app and not gmail.com, could that possibly cause any problems??
@iPhone3GSUser: tried your suggestion and still nothing. My mail wont even manually fetch. :(
@Geezerkids: Did you delete everything in the ALL MAIL Subdirectory in Gmail? I just found out there's copies in that folder too?!
Mine was working when I first checked it at about 8am PST this morning but I just tried agian now, 9:30am PST, and it is not working again. If I wanted to try the move my mail to a different label then back again would I need to only do it for the time period I am trying to sync or all mail?
iPhone 3G 3.1.2
AT&T California
I sync my email, contacts and calendar. Contacts and calendar have been working fine. First had issues with email October 7-8 and then it started working properly. I started having issues yesterday and email still isn't working. I'm in NYC and when I open my email is always connecting and when I try to open an email, it just tries to load it. I have removed the sync for email and turned off push and I still can't open the emails manually. I haven't removed the contacts and calendars for sync because if they are wiped from the phone, I'm afraid I won't get them back right away. Also turning off push and removing email from sync has no effect on the battery life - it's dying quickly. Please help.
@DouglasG: After not working for some 24 hours or so, I just noticed that my inbox synced up to about yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, my inbox is not showing any of the emails received after that time up to now... again.
@DouglasG: If I re-setup the active sync account it syncs fine. I then send myself a test email and nothing that message never arrives. So I don't believe it's due to a message that the ActiveSync protocol can't parse. Also if I go into All Mail I do see the mail in there.
Also if I delete the Google ActiveSync account and point towards my work Exchange server, mail comes through no problem. The problem appears to be with Google's implementation of ActiveSync.
Is it possible for Google to work with at least one user on this forum, look at their logs and work with them to resolve the issue. The problems can't just be because of high volumes.
I no longer get the could not connect error whch is good.
However, Push does not seem to work. Mail only comes into my iPhone when I open the mail client and it checks the server, not via push.
Any information on why this is happening and when it will be resolved?
DouglasG, thank you again for feedback and updates. I am currently only syncing my inbox with the Push notification. I will try your suggestion by moving everything out to another label.
However, this is what is happening to my Gmail ActiveSync this morning.
I have both IMAP and ActiveSync installed on my iPhone 3G[S] (to make sure I don't miss an important email). When I woke up this morning, it listed 4 emails in my IMAP and 4 in my ActiveSync. Upon further investigation, I determined they were the same email. A good sign--or so I thought.
I did not check the emails on the device. I waited until I opened my computer and logged into Gmail.com. By the next fetch cycle my IMAP inbox showed zero emails, while my ActiveSync still showed the same four.
Now here it is several hours later. I have been receiving email and reading them online. I just checked a few minutes ago and my IMAP was showing one new email, which had been received within the prior 15 minutes, while my ActiveSync was still showing the same four messages it had when I woke up this morning. And it was still listing them as unread. While online I had read, deleted and moved the messages to an appropriate label.
I will try your suggestion. Any other thoughts?
Push is back up and running for me without issue, finally!!!!
Highedu, that's awesome. Now if only mine will start working as well.
DouglasG,
I removed everything from my inbox so it was completely empty. My iPhone's
settings are set to only sync the Inbox. I sent one test email from
another account. The subject simply states Test 2:06p with the word Testing in the body of the email.
It has been an hour and while I can see it online my phone has not picked it up.
I started this thread a couple of days ago. I followed Douglas' advice, cleared everything and started over. My results are hit and miss. At times push works (only use it for mail) and other times I will not receive push notifications for hours (although there are a number of new messages on the server). Since this problem started I also notice a dramatic decline in my battery life (iPHone 3G OS 3.2.1), which I imagine has to do with the push issue. I will delete the Sync account and go back to IMAP.
Push Gmail doesn't work and doesn't even fetch mail when I open the client. I send my self an email, open email on my iPhone and I see no mail. Seems to be like this for a few days already. Mail only comes in a couple of times a day. I have to use my computer for the rest.
iPhone 3GS 32GB running on 3.1.2 firmware.
this is definetly still not working properly, as myhotcaffeine said emails comes through my phone 1 or twice a day and that's it, i would never said that but me.com have never had this problem (i know it's not using activesync but that's not the point!), i've always though that google always works better than apple but doesn't seem to be happening now!
Its a new service, kinks like these happen. If you want it fully functional wait a month ... arguments like these are not productive. Also you are comparing it to a paid service.
Device: iPhone 3G S Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2
Once again, all of my emails showed up over night. Had 16 in my inbox on my iPhone when I woke up at around 7:30am eastern.
2 hours later, still cant get my phone to sync any emails received over the last 2 hours (not even manually checking) or sync any emails I deleted via the web.
I am still showing emails from the past 2 days that I have completely deleted from my account (moved to trash and emptied trash).
Device: iPhone 3G Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2
I'm still having the same issues as dougjacobs. I believe it started about 9/28. I know I should have given up on it awhile ago and gone back to imap but I just think the sync technology is so cool.
Are all of us with issues on the same server cluster or something? There has to be something in common with all of us. I don't understand why I'm the only one of my five friends with iPhones using Google Sync that has any issue at all. It seems to be working perfectly for everyone else.
I've given up with Sync for now. Gone back to IMAP pull which, paradoxically, is much faster!!
Before anyone says it's a free service.... It's not if, like me, you're a Google Premier user. Having talked my boss into switching from Exchange to Google Premier this Sync problem is not going down too well I can tell you, certainly doesn't make Google look like a business-grade supplier.
ive gone back to imap as well. this is nuts that this many people cant get it working.
Did something just change over the past 20 minutes or so? I've been having the same problem as most everyone else here, slow syncing, no syncing, etc. About 3pm ET today, it just starting working flawlessly. I'll see if this continues, but my email is now syncing within seconds (definitely under a minute). We'll see how it goes moving forward.
Nothing changed for me. I still haven't received an email on my iPhone since 7:30am eastern and also still have emails that have been deleted from the server days ago still sitting on my phone.
I was way happier when I was paying $5/mo for a mail2web.com account and forwarding my gmail to it....
Never mind. It worked OK for about 45 minutes, then it died again. I'm no longer syncing.
even my calendar is not pushing new information... I really hope that this will be fixed soon because the calendar part is the most important think for me... contacts are ok for now...
I just found something interesting... when I modify a contact, my email and calendar will sync fine right after that... but it will eventually stop...
what could be the problem?
Device: iPhone 3G Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2
Nothing much changed today.. I did however notice for the first time that my battery was draining at an unbelievable rate. I went from 100% charged (8am) after charging all night to 85% within a matter of about 10-20 minutes, presumably because of the phone trying to sync up non stop. After disabling mail and cal sync and recharging back to 100%, my phone is now at 98% after a few phone calls and checking gmail via mobile safari (about 9:30 - present).
Time to go back to imap...
Epic fail...
Device: iPhone 3GS Carrier: AT&T Version: 3.1.2 Location: Washington, D.C.
Same here. Battery draining. Not getting emails. It started on Thursday. Everything was good before. But the calender syncing is always working well.
Please solve this problem! I've already missed an IMPORTANT email from my professor!!!
Everythings seems to work again here. Service responds really fast now aswell ...
Email is still very slow for me. It takes hours for emails to update to my iPhone. Contacts and calendar seem to be working fine. I'm still using IMAP fetch to get the emails in a reasonable amount of time.
So.......... still not working.
Doug from Google....any word on the fix yet?
I am having same problem which started last week. Mails dod not sync and cannot connect manually.
Calendar updates seem to work fine however. battery drain seems unusually high as well.
Device: IiPhone 3GS
SW: 3.1.2
Carrier: O2 - UK
Is this a server side issue. When will it be resolved?
it's funny how this was supposedly fixed and it wasn't a traffic issue anymore. now Douglas has vanished and we are left in the dark again.
I switched back to IMAP for now but now I'm afraid I'll be missing the boat once it is indeed fixed for good... Still extremely frustrating when my girlfriend's works perfectly while sitting next to me making fun of my slow email fetching :( :(
DouglasG: Can you provide us with an update? Does Google still consider this a problem, or are those of us that still having email problems a small enough group now that we don't warrant attention? Just to help, my symptoms are that email does work, but updates lag. It can take 4-5 hours for a new email to get to my iPhone via ActiveSync Push. I don't have the battery draining problem, so I believe that my iPhone is talking to the ActiveSync servers with no issues. It seems that the delay is between the AS servers and the mail servers themselves. Of course, this is all speculation, since I don't know how the Google system is configured.
Thanks, George
looks like we've been overlooked on this one guys. i dont even know where to begin with a fix either.... any suggestions anyone,. my mail wont even fetch anymore.
I get a similiar issue, except continually get the message "incorrect password" then "can't connect to server"
i bit the bullet and deleted the whole account and recreated it. seems to have dont the trick for me so far. push working again. contacts syncing. ill cross my fingers.
I just did the same thing as geezerkids about an hour or so ago, and my push email is now working as well. I'll give it some more time and give my feedback later.
I had removed my Gmail ActiveSync connection for a couple of days. Last night I finally recreated the account. I only sync my mail and calendar. The calendar syncs flawlessly, however, my mail still does not sync.
After recreating the account it took quite awhile before the mail populated. My actual inbox was empty at the time, checking online and via IMAP. However, ActiveSync brought in three emails, which had been deleted prior to me recreating the account. I did receive one this morning after about an hour delay. When I deleted it it deleted on my IMAP just fine. However, I still have the old emails that populated last night. They have long since been permanently deleted from the server.
As gmoses2 mentioned, is there an issue between the Gmail server and the ActiveSync servers not staying updated?
Odd I removed my Google exchange account last night and re-created it. Noticed my contacts sync'd immediately as well as my calendars. Have been getting email on regular basis via sync. Seems to work well now.
same problem here. deleting the account and re-adding it didn't work for me... still intermittent connections
Is Search capacity working in the active sync mail? That was one of the real problems for me even if the sync part worked. In the IMAP native iPhone gmail app you can search your emails on the server without any trouble. Even when the Active Sync was actually synced I couldn't search on the server as I could in IMAP.
Hi everyone,
Sorry for the long gap between updates on my part - we've a big upgrade in the works which has been taking up all my time. We definitely still consider it a problem that some of you can't get mail at all or are having your batteries drained - these should hopefully be fixed for most people by the update (there are a bunch of potential causes that are fixed by it). We're aware of the slowness problem too, and we think the upgrade should help with that. We've also been rolling out smaller fixes over time, which should account for some of the improvements people have been pointing out.
I'll make sure to let everyone know when the upgrade is rolled out (it should just start working without any intervention from you).
Douglas
I just started using Google Sync 2 days ago. It was working fine until late yesterday morning, Eastern time zone.
Now I get, "The server could not be reached. This can be caused by temporary network conditions. Support code: 0x85010005"
I'm using a Palm Treo Pro.
Server address m.google.com
SSL checked
User name is my full Gmail email address
Password is correct
Save password checked
I've tried just synchronizing email or all 4
I've been having the same issue too for days now, mail comes through sometimes, most often though I get The connection to the server failed message.
DouglasG from google, any time frame when the upgrade will be out? Today, tomorrow, next week?
same here, as of like 5am yesterday morning sync stopped pushing email...now its very random when i will see work...i dont get an error i'll just noticed messages in my gmail inbox but they're not showing on my phone, when i open the mail app it will connect and then stop like there is no new mail, very odd stuff (tried all the usual fixes but nothing works, and since it just stopped working i assumed it was server end issues)
i dont mind turning on IMAP in the mean time, but man i've been spoiled by sync, its the best.
Thanks for keeping the hope alive Douglas :) I'm glad that you will be notifiying us when the update is rolled out so those of us that have temporarily have switched back to imap know to come give sync another shot.
My connection is now like a road construction crew. Sometimes it works, but not when I'm looking. The last time it worked was 3:23 PM eastern.
mine started working again around 4:00PM ET....very weird, but i'm certainly happy to have it back. so there were server upgrades that fixed the issue? my friend was not experiencing any issues at all and she lives, as do i, in the boston area, so it was weird we had different experiences.
Seems to be working for me now also. San Francisco, CA. 7:22 PM.
Working perfectly for me, and better then when it first came online! Notifications are arriving within seconds of a test email being sent from my work account, no problems AT ALL.
Thankyou Google!
Hmm, based on this positive feedback i decided to give sync a go again and it's been working for the past hour. I'm still extremely skeptical since I've seen it work for a couples at a time and then stop working before. /crossing_fingers.
All the recent positive feedback is encouraging but I too am skeptical. I will keep monitoring this post until we get a definitive "go" from google. I too am a paid google apps user so I am expecting this to be corrected. Quick question, for those of you that have it working are you doing a complete delete of your old account or just deactivating IMAP and turning sync mail "on"?
Thanks.
I leave my IMAP account there, just deactivate it, and turn on the push sync for email; as far as i know there is no funtional issues leaving the IMAP settings (someone correct me if im wrong)...I'm of the mindset it's always good to have a backup, and as amazingly awesome Google is i know that there will be some downtime every so often, and i use all the free google services so i can only complain so much (no offense to you as a paying customer, just saying that i appreciate the products i get free from google and its not my place to tear them a new one if i cant get email pushed to me for an hour, haha)
I do the same as Dave A. There is no way I'm deleting my account. I have five years of data in it!
rbeeman,
you have to delete your account on your phone... it will not delete any data on your google account...
sync works fine for me today... very fast too!!!
UPDATE:
My ActiveSync push notification email seems to be working pristinely again. It started up shortly after my last post and has been working well for the past two days. I am now feeling confident enough to go solely Gmail push through ActiveSync.
@mgutman - I have actually been running IMAP and Gmail Push through MS Exchange side-by-side for the past couple of weeks. The last two days, while sync has been working smoothly I get two mail notifications, one that is very fast with the sync and one that comes a few minutes later via fetch in IMAP.
I will post again if my sync stops working.
@zadigre,
I actually didn't even do that and its been working perfectly for the past 3.5 hours. That's the longest run of it actually working properly in over two weeks. I'm almost starting to get slightly optimistic. I hope my sync dreams dont come crashing down around me :P
My push still isn't working. It was working a couple of weeks ago but hasn't worked since. Did you change anything to get it to start workig or did it jus start working on it's own?
Device: iPhone 3.0

Looks like I am not alone
Got the "cannot get mail" msg and my inbox when blank. Once it started working some new mail never showed up or older read mail in the inbox would vanish. Logging into gmail via web or web iphone app correctly displays inbox contents. In general I have always seen bugs in push whether mail or calendar in the Iphone.
My push is finally working perfectly!!!! What are the recommendations from Google about whether to sync all the folders or just Inbox and let the others fetch?
Still dead in the water for me..................
I have a 3GS 3.0 with Push set for gmail and calendar... and both stoped working an hour ago!
I cannot even get my email through the Iphone emailer program!
The only thing that is working is the Iphone webmail through Safari!
Over 24 hours of sync working properly now for me. Hope this lasts!
It's sort of working for me. Defiinitely not real time. I have messages that hit both the web client and my outlook that won't hit my phone. DouglasG any update on the update?
I may have spoken a little too soon. It's definitely a ton better than the past two weeks but it looks like I'm having about a 20 minute delay before I get push notifications. If I manually open my mail client it finds the new mail right away however. Getting closer! Not quit there yet.
I deleted my Gmail Push account and readded it.... it downlaoded the emails but then shortly It stopped pushing emails again! Back to square one!
Here's the situation, any thoughts from Douglas at Google?
1. i have a gmail account on the iphone that was set up through the standard mail setup wizard, and it's working fine even today.
2. i later disabled that when i learned about this flashy google/exchange setup for the contacts/calendar/mail package total.
3. after enabling and disabling back and forth, i have isolated the problem in the exchange server deal.
4. at first i wasn't receiving email through this channel, and then my contacts disappeared. now all the events from my calendar are gone as well.
5. grrrrrrrrr
6. i have talked with apple who says that they have had many calls from customers just like me, though the issue is with the google side of it.
7. now= when the exchange server is enabled, the contacts are empty, the inbox is empty, and the calendar is empty.
8. i have deleted it and reset the whole deal from scratch and no joy.
9. through the web interface on the computer, i can see events in the calendar, contacts in the list, and mail in the box- the iphone, not so much.
Anyone else got any of this going on? more importantly, anyone else solved the riddle of the exchange server/black hole?
Thanks
I have my iPhone 3GS set up with the google-exchange server. This option was working fine until this morning when I noticed that my inbox was empty. I sent some emails to this account for testing and it works fine, but my old mails are gone. There is one way to get my old emails back?
Jozzhe, they are gone from your phone or from your gmail account (if you check on the web interface)? If it's only on your phone, how much days do you sync? By the default, I think the iPhone setting is 3 days... I,ve set mine to 1 week... So emails older than 1 week do nit appear in my inbox.
Zadigre, Well, all my messages are in my gmail account, the problem is with my iphone ( I think ).
My iphone is set to 2 weeks and I remember that I received a new message on Saturday morning. I don't know whats going on with my phone/gmail account. I'll try to delete my account and set it up again and I'll let you know if this solve the problem.
Hi everyone,
The update was rolled out this morning (UK time, that is) and it looks like it should have fixed many of the issues that were stopping your syncs from working. If you're still experiencing problems, let us know and we can look into the cause.
Thanks,
Douglas
my push email is still not working :(
Hi, Douglas, I've been following this string since last week because my push was working fine and then all of a sudden stopped working. I re-added the exchange account today after reading your update but it's still not working. I've sent emails to my Gmail account and they're not being pushed to my iPhone. In fact, when I manually get the email, they don't appear either. Is the push for exchange fix out worldwide? I'm in Florida.
Thanks,
Dave
Hi Douglas,
Thanks for the heads up. After a few tests, I still have the same problems. Dave did a good summary of the situation with his post before mine.
Regards,
Fred
Not working for me either. It's not downloading any mail, there does seem to a be a longer connection period so I assume they've increased the time-out but it still not pushing the mail. I didn't delete my account and add it again, I just turned off IMAP and turned on mail in Exchange. Contacts and Calendar are fine.
I've a 2G iPhone so it's connecting over Edge. I'll leave it on for day and see if it improves.
Douglas, is there any details you need about phones/setup to troubleshoot further?
I stand corrected, mail is now working. They come through in about 5-10 seconds after hitting my gmail inbox.
I hope it lasts. I'll report back if it doesn't
I am still having a 10-20 minute delay before I get pushed notifications. I just sent myself a test email at 8:02am PST and I saw it in my inbox on the web immediately. My iPhone, however, did not alert me to the new message until 8:18am.
Hi Douglas,
Its not working for me either, its been very flaky for about a week now. Imap works fine when set to fetch, however push has not worked 100% (not even 10%, get emails coming through every now and then hours after they have been sent) for about a week.
Hey Douglas same problem. Activated sync and it worked rightaway but now not working at all. Not even fetching emails that I know are in my web account.
Hi Douglas,
I'm using an iPhone 3GS.
Am in Singapore and my Google Apps push mail under "Microsoft Exchange" STOPPED working a few days ago!?
The mails doesn't get pushed (either via cellular network or wifi)!
I have reset my settings, deleted the account on my iPhone, and re-set up the account, it just refuses to "push".
I even tried restarting my phone and still the mails doesn't come in.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
DouglasG,
3GS, 32GB running 3.0.1.
Still getting "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed". No changes in configuration for months, on my device, so I know that's not an issue. Also, all other data using apps are happy.
Got updates? Thanks!
Still no joy here in Virginia. I've deleted/re-added the connection on my Treo Pro.
I now get "The security certificate on the server is not valid. Contact your Exchange Server administrator or ISP to install a valid certificate on the server.
Support Code 0x80072F06"
I've verified my password and email address a couple of times to make sure that wasn't an issue.

I noticed could not get/sent mail at around 6 AM this morning. Deleted and readded google account on iphone, now I no longer have any contacts. What is going on here?
iPhone 3G, 16GB, 3.1.2, France.
I can not use gmail push since two days and this is very annoying !! Please Google Help Us !! I also deleted and readded my account but still the same at the end... Thanks
I am in the UK and this error started happening to me yesterday 26/10/2009. Can you please let me know when you expect it to be fixed.
It appears many are having the same problem I am having. I receive a "Cannot Get Mail" the connection to the server failed message when I try to retrieve my email for Google APPS. My other email address is working fine. Is google having a problem with the server? if they are having issues is it posted somewhere?
Still having problems. I have tried several times to delete and set up the account again. The last email that was pushed to my iPhone was last Friday. Have not been able to get anything since. iPhone 3GS Network: AT&T Version: 3.1.2 (7D11)
Just sent a few test messages on mine after it hadn't been working and they seem to be getting pushed to the device. Hopefully google have now plugged back int he server that an engineer probably kicked the lead out of ;-)
Still no joy here in San Francisco.
Everything just started working again for no apparent reason. I am very disappointed Google does not report when the server on their end is having trouble. I am sure many of us wasted a lot of time trying to figure out if the problem was with our device. I know I did (two hours at least). Oh well Windows 7 is coming out with some cool features for email exchange. Maybe time to change. Windows new search engine is great. Google you need to learn something about keeping your customers posted.
Here in the UK it still isn't working.
Having the same problem for 24 hours already. Gmail, contacts and calendar push not working. Really frustrating as it is hindering my work. Location: Finland device: iPhone 3 gs operator: TeliaSonera Using google for domains
Same here! No push notifications. It stays connected to the server, but it isn't working.
Location: The Netherlands device: iPhone 3 gs operator: T-Mobile
I cannot sync my mail\contacts\calendar since a few days now.It says to fail in connecting to the server.
Same here. Los Angeles. Google Apps. 3GS. All Exchange services offline for the past three days. Hard reset made no difference. Same with removing and adding a new account. Attempting a software update now.
Checked and updated my iPhone 3GS.....didn't solve issue. Still no services and same error message. " 'Cannot Get Mai' the connection to the server failed"
Might have solved this, at least for people with google apps domain. (I host my personal domain with google and gmail.)
Iphone 3gs 3.1.2
So I did previously have push mail, calendar, and contacts running, then it just stopped. Same problem that a lot of people are having.
After numerous hard resets, removing accts, nothing.
Then I went in to the "manage your domain" section of google apps. Select "Service Settings" Select Mobile. Lo and behold, there is a check box for "Enable Google Sync". Not sure if this is new or what. In any case it was unchecked. So I checked it, went to the iphone re-added the account. All is working.
Could be coincedence, but it might be worth a try.
I figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At least in my case.
Google added a Mobile control panel in the Google Apps Dashboard Preferences. And syncing was unchecked. It now works.

This worked for me, although I would have liked some notice from Google. Thanks mfern and everyone else who posted this solution.
Sync for mail had not been working for me since the launch, but happy to say it's been working fine since yesterday morning when I tried it again.
The only minor propblem was that after archiving some mail on the web after the initial sync, this wasn't reflected on my phone. Not a big problem and it doesn't seem to be happening anymore.
For those still having problems I can only guess that either Google hasn't rolled it out to all users or that you have mail that the active sync is getting stuck on. A while back they suggested moving all mail out of the inbox to a new label called something like tempinbox and then start syncing from scratch and see if that works. If it does gradually start moving mail from the tempinbox to inbox. Hope this helps.
That worked for me as well! Great catch!!!
It Works checking the enable sync on manage domain on google apps.
It stopped suddenly for me as well... Sound like right after the update.

Google Mail's SKY mail not syncing anymore, was okay a couple of days ago. Connection error.
Please resolve.
@ indeno Thank you sooo much. I also use google apps and i am surprised that they added the mobile feature with push service to the control panel. However GOOGLE should let us know that we have to switch this on. It worked before, so why didn't they leave it set by default for the users who all ready have the google apps and push setup!!!
I don't know for all of you, but for me the mobile feature in my Google Apps was always there... I had to enable it to first get my calendars and contacts sync...
Even Google tells you that you have to enable it for your Google Apps domain... It's even written in Google Help at http://google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=98252...
I got the email sync too without doing anything more when it was released (with all those little bugs we all got after the release)...
it is working for me as well after enabling mobile sync services. Nice of google to inform us of this change NOT!
gib400,
the mobile sync service was always there (at least for me)... maybe it worked without enabling this service, but it was there... And Google already had the instructions to enable this service (look at me previous message)
i'm still having troubles today using m.google.com as activesync server on iphone3...
I too am still having issues. Luckily I have an iPhone and can check my mail anyways, but it is a lot less convenient to have to do it via Safari.

My push via ActiveSync just suddenly stopped working on Monday. I tried deleting the account and adding it back but it still doesn't work.
I am having problems too. I noticed it didn't download any messages since a couple days ago. Today I get "Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed."
I activated Google Sync on the domain settings of the website and everything appears to be working again.
Thanks hawk99, that solved for me as well!
I moved all of my Inbox mail to a separate folder and tried again with no joy. I deleted the sync setup on my phone and added it again with no joy.
I then set it up to only sync mail, and it worked. Then I added contacts and calendar and it continued to work.
It's been working since yesterday morning.
I am running iPhone 3G with Google Apps premier for my business and set it up via the Exchange setting on the iphone as per google instructions. Have been having some of the problems mentioned above for a few weeks now but can get round the email problem by setting up another email account on the iphone and pointing it at the work domain - this works for email fine BUT you don;t get calender which I need !!! Go into your domain settings on Google Apps then go to Mobile. You will see a sync box that you need to check. Once I did this everything worked fine.
Google should of let people know that it updated its software and put in a box to be "checked".... Ridiculous I know
I have been having this problem since Monday 10-26. I fixed it by checking the box to allow for syncing. Thanks for the advice.
the enable sync check box is already enabled on mine, however i am still getting the error that it is not taking the login when attempting to sync.

Clearly there are some issues at the moment. I moved to IMAP, fetch delivery works fine. Disabled the account and switched Push account back on, nothing. Been 24 hours now and no respose from google. Fucking not good enough I say!
I think we are all starting to wonder if Google even read this forum. Clearly there are issues.
I am having the same issue. I have an iPhone and push email does not work at all, in fact I can't even fetch my email manually as long as I am using the Google sync setup. I switched to IMAP and that is working okay to pull email . I'm very frustrated but find it hard to complain about something that is free! Please give us an ETA as to when it may be fixed - thanks!

it's just gone pear shaped for me too over the last couple of days. I
had the issue before a couple of weeks ago too but only now found this
forum. Problem appears to only be the 'inbox' push as the 'sent'
folder still pushes emails sent from my laptop when the iPhone is set
to do so.
Yes, I think it's the inbox folder that has the problems. A work around some people are using is setting the "all mail" folder to push as well. That way they are getting notification when emails arrive.
Hi, I'm in Australia with Optus as my carrier and I'm having problems too. I set up my corporate google mail account and it was working perfectly (mail, contacts and calendar) for about 4 weeks and then it just stopped around 26th October. Please GOOGLE can you sort it out???
i'm having this same problem, it's very annoying....

Same problem here. Push does not work on my iphone 3gs. Occasionally the inbox will clear out, and messages won't even sync manually unless I switch to imap.
Same problem here. Sync is sporadic on my iphone.
Same here. Sync stopped working for me today around 4 PM EST.
GoogleSync is still not working at all here. Messages get through with at least several hours of delay, some never, I can still see a message in my GoogleSync Inbox that I deleted yesterday… Besides that the Spam-Mailbox does not show up in the Exchange inbox!
I am using an iPhone 3G with software version 3.1.2
I'm having the same problem. This just started for me last night. Any response from Google? Seriously! I am going out of town this weekend and need this to work for me!!
Perhaps this is helpful- I experienced the same problem two weeks ago. I went into my domain settings in Google Mail. I found a sync button box that needed to be checked. Apparently Google made a software change that requires you to "check the box". I also went into Itunes and made sure the sync settings were correct. This worked for me. Hopefully this will be helpful to some of you.
Where do you find the domain settings?
It stopped working for me again. I can't even manually get mail. This has been happening on and off all week. There was one time where I actually needed to get an email I had sent and I couldn't because it couldn't connect to the server.
This is kind of getting absurd. I'm sick of hearing that "it isn't down, but it might be slow. We have a software update that will fix it soon."
Just pull the product, get it right and then bring it back when it's ready.
The Domain Setting is for Google APPS mail. Top right corner when you are in Google Apps mail under "Manage this Domain" . If you are using gmail I can not offer any advice other then check your ITUNES screen. I have not experienced any problems with my gmail. Hopefully this helps
I've also been having issues for the past few days with my email. It
will work fine for a little while and then I'll stop getting emails.
Also, I sometimes receive emails but can't open them. It's been hit or
miss. I'm in NY so I'm using AT&T with an iPhone 3GS with software
version 3.1.2
It's been down for a few weeks now. Like others mentioned, I cannot get my email manually either. Randomly, I get the emails on my iphone one shot. Most of the time, hours after they arrive in my gmail inbox. Calendar and contacts are working fine except for occasional mess in the contacts' fields. What happens is email addresses of some contacts appear in the "note" field. Anyway, my main and big problem remains with the delay in receiving my emails on my iPhone. I'm using iPhone 3GS/3.1.2 and the carrier is Fido (I'm in Canada).
My push worked fine for a month but stopped altogether 24 hour ago. Messages sometimes show up hours late. Using a 3GS with ATT in Boston. DouglasG - this problem has been going on for awhile. Are we any closer to a fix?
How about an update?????? DouglasG hasnt posted since 10/26! 13 days is a bit too long when so many users are having problems.....
google obviously doesn't care enough about this problem to do much about it or at least update their users. so much for "not being evil"
Hey everyone,
I meant to post again on Friday (actually I thought I had, not sure

things we're working on in that regard - one thing you could try now is
removing and recreating the sync relationship on your phone, as that
should work much better with this new update. If you're finding that
mails are slow to make it to your phone, again we're looking into the
cause of that and will get back to you, but in that case it's better
not to recreate the sync relationship.

I know my sync/push email has been behaving a lot better since Doug sent the note. It's not instantaneous yet, but I'm getting emails within a minute of arriving in my inbox. iPhone 3G AT&T Boston area
Thanks Douglas,
after deleting and recreating the sync relationship mails get pushed again to the iphone nearly instantaneously.

I have tried everything and it still isnt working.
Device: iPhone 3G 3.1.2 Carries: AT&T Country: US I deleted the account on my iPhone and re-added it. Email was pushing perfectly for about 15-30 minutes, and now its DEAD AGAIN.....
This is complete crap. No one from google seems to be saying anything about it.
Starting to seem like this is more of an "alpha" service then a beta...
Thank you DouglasG I reinstalled my sync and now it works perfectly again - instantaneous. Be sure to use Microsoft Exchange. Follow this link: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740
Alkriegel, I just did that and it still doesn't work. In fact, I have done it several times without success. It's obviously a google issue and no one seems to know when it will be fixed.
You're right. I guess I was overly optimistic when it worked for a few minutes. Now it's not working at all!
I guess I spoke too soon. It worked yesterday afternoon and last night, but early this morning, my push email came to a screeching halt. I've switched back to IMAP until I hear that it's working again.
We're all finding the same thing. DouglasG - Any chance of giving us a brief daily update to keep our frustration level down?
This doesn't work for me eitehr... any update here?

Hi again. I forgot this.. Device: iPhone 3gs 3.1.2
Carrier: 3
Country / Language: Swedish
If you remove the sync on your iPhone and then re-set it up it should be working again.
no, i have deleted the settings and accounts several times and it still dont work :(
:-( Must still be a user specific issue for you.
I am having the same problem as the one that started this thread. Gives me the error that it cannot get mail.
Did you try the re-set. that was supposed to have been fixed ages ago.

Glad that it's working again for most people. We'll continue to troubleshoot ongoing issues to narrow down potential problems and get it up and running for everyone else.
Thanks, Robin
I have been getting a "Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed." message for a couple of weeks. I deleted and set up the sync again (just using it for mail on my iPhone 3GS) but that did not change anything. I checked my credentials of course. When I originally set it up over a month ago it worked, but stopped at some point....I did not notice since I often use Safari to check my google apps mail.
Phone informationPhone: 3GS Version: 3.1.2 Firmware: 05.11.07 My sync was working properly up until a day or so ago. I have tried to delete the account and re-add it numerous times now with no change. It also seems like my phone is unable to download messages properly as it was doing a week or so ago. Is there anything I can do to begin getting push notifications and have it sync properly again? Thanks
Well its still not working .. Am on iPhone 3.1.2 T-Mobile Germany / Wifi as well
No Luck :(
Finally has been working for me reliably for the past two weeks without an incident!! I am thrilled. ;)
I am scared of jinxing mysefl by posting but I owe it to the survivors of this push debacle. It has now been working for me for at least a week. Very happy. Fingers are crossed. Good luck to all.
Even with it's usage quirks I kept using it but today I did not get any of my mail on the phone. The rollout of push mail has been a mess. I am surprised it hasn't gotten a lot of attention. Not sure if it's google fault or what but it is simply barely beta worthy in terms of reliability. "even in the future nothing works" http://www.seroundtable.com/ archives/021125.html
Bin or Douglas I am not getting any email on my iphone 3Gs os 3.1.2 i have posted in another thread about this but i tought i would post in this one as it has been looked at by you guys i have a standerd apps account with myowndomain.com address. push has not worked in about 48 hours is there anything you can tell me that will help it start to work
I've now had it reliably working for almost a month!! Hurrah, and I hope this doesn't jinx it.
