Hi all,

We've just released a new version of Google Maps for mobile for BlackBerry (version 3.2). This update includes similar functionality to the recent update for Windows Mobile and S60 devices. Please read the Official Google Mobile Blog for more information: http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/10/layers-come-to-google-maps-for.html

As always, please let us know what you think!

Best,
Tom
Update:
I also wanted to point out that this update should resolve many of the internal GPS/Google Maps for mobile issues certain BlackBerry devices were experiencing, namely the Tour, 8330m, and others on certain carriers.

Looks like this doesnt work on a Blackberry Storm. Everything loads just fine but the touch screen aspects dont work and it treats any screen click as if you were clicking the track ball.

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback so far. The team's targeted the source of the problem and are working on a fix currently. Essentially, if you've upgraded your Storm to the 5.0 software, you'll receive the non-touchscreen version of Google Maps for mobile for your device. We're addressing this as I type, and I'll post again as soon as the problem's been resolved. In the meantime, thanks for your continued patience :)

Best,
Tom

I am running OS 5.0.0.323 on my Storm 9530 and Google maps works fine, touch screen and all. I found that the app can go to "compatibility mode" some times which can lead to the touchscreen unfriendly version. To fix this you have to turn off under Options -> Applications which resolves the problem.

There is one part of google maps 3.2 that isn't working for me, Latitude. I try to log in with my google account information and I get the 'login failed' message. It then brings up the login screen again with one of those type the letters you see in the image challenge thingies in addition to requesting your username and password. In an effort to troubleshoot I've tried opening all application permissions, I've typed my username and password correctly multiple times and checked with my BES admin (me!) to make sure I wasn't blocking anything via BES to prevent this functionality.

Has anyone had any luck getting latitude to work in google maps 3.2 on a 9530 Storm with OS 5.0.0.323? If so I'd love to hear your secret!  :)

You need a 4.7 Storm version to get this working on a 5.0 OS.  Google "Google Maps 3.2 on 5.0 OS Storm" and check out the first result

Ok so my question now is whether I can access the Categories search option?  I had it once and now that I've used it the option is only for "Recent Searches" which I don't really need.  Mostly because my recent Searches show up in my list of Layers which I also don't need and there seems to be no way to get rid of them?  I'd like Categories back and Layer lists to be open to deleting entries :)

I'm on a Storm on 5.0.0.323

I just downloaded the new Google Maps on my Blackberry Tour from Verizon.  When I try to launch the application I get the following message:

"Error starting GoogleMaps:  Module 'GoogleMaps-2' has verification errors."

Does anyone know how to correct this issue?

I really depend on Google maps to get me around and I am heading out of town this afternoon! Thanks for everything...great product!!!

Is the TRANSIT LAYER working properly? Whether it's enabled or not, All i can see is the usual Subway markers.

Also, it'd be great to be able to remove RECENT SEARCHES from the LAYERS LIST and move them back to the search favorites.

On my Tour (Telus, Canada) it downloaded the touchscreen version with on-screen zoom and "my location" instead of KB version.  Couple of factors may have influenced this (my browser was set to emulate firefox, and I downloaded from google.com/gmm) will try again with stock user agent from m.google.com/maps see if it makes a difference.

Going to suggest you use the Desktop Manager to delete the app completely which will also clear the cache and cookies before trying a new cownload and then pull the battery for at least five minutes to allow the servers to reset.

I have it on my Storm 9530 with OS 4.7 and I have found an error.  When I am in the Latitude Display Menu (showing the list of all my friends) and I highlight a friend and click "Show on map" it goes to the map and shows me but it doesn't direct to that friend.  As a workaround I just scroll through the friends on the map using the arrows.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I just downloaded 3.20, and I was extremely disappointed to find that I can no longer access my external (bluetooth) GPS.

Is this likely to come back?  Is there any way to revert to my previous (3,02) version so I can keep using the GPS?

If you have just updated Google Maps to the latest version please read the following.

This may have caused more problems than just using the map so it may be necessary to have the Service Book resent by your supplier or go back to Factory Default Settings which will get this sent automatically and you will have to go through the Setup Wizard again. To go back to Factory Default it is Options - Security Options - General Settings - Wipe Handheld - and the password unless you have changed it will be blackberry.

The C Man:  What kinds of problems could have been caused and how would people know?  Doing a Security Wipe involves erasing ALL your application data and/or your applications. There is a choice which to wipe so which one do you mean?  This is a pretty big move and people will need to have their data backed up before doing so.  Also one can have service books sent by going through Email Setttings>Menu Key>Service Books>Send Service Books which is much easier than doing a Security Wipe.

This is the first I've heard of any other issues with the new Google Maps that would require such drastic action and it would be helpful to know what these problems might be AND to ensure people know that doing a security wipe requires a backup so as not to lost valuable data and ALSO that there are other ways to get service books sent that aren't as drastic.

They'll know when  they find they can't sign in to apps with a try later notification which is normally network problems. Wipe without third part apps - backups should be done with the Desktop Manager and phone numbers should always be copied to SIM cards. Unfortunately there appears to be a problem in your route for sending Service Books if you don't have a Blackberry Email service set up and working which can happen with certain suppliers where they take over this service from Blackberry even though you are guided to a Blackberry page.

Ok that's good to know.  I haven't had any issues like that but for those who have they'll now have a solution.  Thanks for the tip!

Did you figure out a way to delete individual Layers from the list?  That, and being able to access the Categories menu more than once are my only (minor) beefs with the new Google Maps.  Otherwise though I'm liking it quite a lot.

Hi peterpandemonium,
I have a BlackBerry 8100 and I'm facing the same connection problem since I upgraded to Maps 3.2.0.

After reading in your post "Email Setttings>Menu Key>Service Books>Send Service Books", I tried to do it, but I'm unable to find this option. Could you provide detailed info on how to find the "Email Settings" option?

Thanks a lot!

The email settings is normally found in the Setup folder but unfortunately this may not be available due to loosing the Service Book as the phone reverts to basics. Another place to find it should be the Setup Wizard but you could have the same problem.

I'm not sure about the 8100 but you could first try Options>Advanced Options>Host Routing Table>Menu Key>Register Now.  May or may not help but it won't hurt.  If this is not an option for you or doesn't fix the problem then perhaps you'll have to try out C Man's solution. Make sure to backup using Desktop Manager first and only erase "Emails, Contacts etc." not "User Installed Applications" or "Media Card"

I had the older version of google maps 3.0.2 and all was working perfect. Now after I installed the new one, version 3.2.0 a message came:
"Network unavailable: This application requires a data connection. Please contact your carrier, or visit www.google.com/gmm/configure.html on you computer for more info."
Using the link, there is no instructions for BB and also does not give me the option for my country, Brazil. After all I tried, I deleted the new version and reinstalled the old one, but now the problem is with the older version which was successfully working before.

Google, please inform what to do to have the maps again on my BB curve 8900????

Now that I've downloaded the latest version of google maps on my blackberry curve, the application won't even launch. I've installed it twice. Problem with the new version which is killing parts of the Service Book so go into Option - Advanced Option - Host Routing - menu key - Registration. Eveything should work from then. Badly affected are Google Sync and Talk plus some others

What I think? I think it's *horribly* broken on my BlackBerry Storm. Before doing the update, I had a nice, full screen touch display of my maps. Since the "new with layers" update, I now get a screen split half-and-half with the map and the keyboard. I can no longer view maps full screen and it no longer displays in landscape-mode. Worse: the touch interface no longer lets me zoom/scale or select which of my friends to view.

Basically, it's *SO* broken that I've unloaded the application and am now using the BlackBerry Navigator application. It at least works.

Best answer - The C Man (Top Contributor)
Best I can do in the way of solving the problems with this and the reason I am giving this as a Best Answer is it most likely the cure and the warning you may need.

This version seems to have a built in fault and turns off certain parts of the Service Book which (as far as I can see) are mainly Google apps such as Sync, Mail and Talk but there could be others. Once you have installed it open the BB's Options (spanner icon) click on Advanced Options  then Host Routing Table and use the Menu Button to find Register Now and click the Trackball on this to receive a Registration Notice from Blackberry which I believe you should open. Everything should start working again but you will probably have to sign into or point to the correct addresses again for each app.

Not working for me either in a BB 8120 with OS updated. I've tried everything you say here (except for the bold things... not applicable) re-sent the services book, re-registered successfully and still doesn't work, asking for a data plan (I have one). 3.0.2 worked fine with same OS and same config. Gmail and any other Mobile Apps are now not working with the same error message, so I have uninstalled anything from Google from the Desktop Manager.

I appreciate the links, but I'm always a touch "nervous" about downloading software from other than the producer's (ie., Google) site. Has Google not put out a link to a backrev or to a fixed version?

I did notice that while my phone had the issues, my wife's Storm did not ...until the battery died. When she recharged it and powered it on, it was exhibiting the same brokenness. Did Google push the broken code, or something? I *know* she didn't download any updates.

ferricoxide,

I think you owe Peter an apology for not trusting him) and Google will not and do not issue anything that would deliberately cause a break in something. Blackberry/RIM update phones (unless auto update is switched off) in down time for the phone and if you have a password for the SIM it will need to be used to unlock the phone after one of these but if you do not then it is almost impossible to recognise other than having apps such as Google Talk/Mail/Sync and other third part apps that you need to sign into and when a phone is plugged into a charger it (unless you take it back to the background screen) it shows the clock which informs BB that it is at rest and the updates can be sent. The latest of these is an extremely strong Security Update which might affect some phones (blame President Obama for this one) so the best way is to do a Restore to Factory Default and the instructions for this were given above. A possible scenario is that as the phones were loading the new Map they also picked up the update but if you load the Google Maps again you may also need to Register the phone again and from my own experiments this does work..

@C Man:
It's not lack of trust in Peter, it's lack of trust in the Internet at large. My trust in downloads, without knowing their provenance, is low by default. Not seeing a Google-based link or indication that Peter is speaking for Google in an official capacity, I fall back to my default. If Peter took it as me not trusting him, then I'm sorry for that.

Only reason I mention my wife's phone is that I *know* that neither she nor I installed anything that would have changed the software from the older maps behavior to the new/broken behavior on the storm. I'd kind of been curious how mine changed to the broken version, since I hadn't recalled updating the software. I futz with my phone far more than she does (she doesn't really futz with it at all). My phone was the first to exhibit the broken Storm build. Hers stayed normal/functional for a number of days afterwards. It wasn't until the reboot that it changed to the same broken Maps behavior as mine. So, it seems something autonomous changed the installed software version/behavior.

Does rather point to an update in the down time which would cause the broken effect such as not being able to use third party apps or needing to sign in again.

Thom,

I've installed the app just fine, but the redirector seems to have pointed me to the STORM or STORM 2 version of the app as I have the zoom in and zoom out magnifying glass icons on my screen. I also have the "button" to touch for my location... this wastes space on my display.

There was this same problem when the Tour first came out - any eta on getting the redirection fixed? or any way I can load the specific version I need?

Thanks!

Some comments about v3.2 and external GPS access:

I have a BlackBerry 8300 wich does NOT have a built-in GPS but I also have a Garmin GPS 10 reciever that I hook up to the BlackBerry through bluetooth. The GPS updates the location perfectly (even with a 2yd accuracy) and it also works great with the included "BlackBerry Maps" application. It also USED to work great with previous versions of Google Maps because those versions included a "GPS Navigation" option in the options menu. I recently upgraded to Google Maps v3.2 and that option is no longer there... I've reading the mobile Google help and it says that if your phone has an internal GPS, Google Maps v3.2 will detect it and start using it as long as it's enabled in the BlackBerry's advanced options section of the phone's settings. As I understand, if the BlackBerry has a bluetooth GPS associated with it and the GPS navigation enabled, the GPS availability should be "transparent" to any application that's able to use GPS navigation; at least all the previous versions of Google Maps had the option I mentioned before and IT WORKED... Now, the option has disappeared from the options menu in Google Maps and the program doesn't "see" the GPS receiver anymore.

Help Please!, at least, if anyone could tell me how to get back to a previous version of Google Maps, the hint will be appreciated.

Thom or anyone,
Just updated the other day and now MYL doesn't work on my 8130 Pearl.  Worked just fine before.  Now I get the "my location is temporarily unavailable" error every time.  All permissions are set to "Allow", MYL is enabled and GPS is wide open.  It's not much fun using the app when i have to manually find MYL.  Any ideas / known issues?

Thanks,
B

Tour 9630 user here.  After updating to 3.2.1 I couldn't navigate or click on any map.  It just felt like the wrong version.  Thanks to a post above by Jason Birch I went in and changed my browser emulation from Firefox back to Blackberry Browser, uninstalled Google maps,  re-downloaded and installed from   m.google.com/maps

I'm assuming that it auto-detected and downloaded the proper version for my Tour and I'm pleased that it is working properly again.

Do you mean your location or those of your friends? Your friends are more controlled by their being in active or background mode and the battery and data saving modes in your own will regulate how often your information is updated.

Thom/Google,

Any update on fixing the issues for Google Maps Version  3.2.1 for BB Storm with OS 5.0 upgrade?  Googel maps won't recognize my GPS closer than 500 meters and the interface is still designed for trackball/keyboard blackberries.

Thanks.

Google Maps 3.2.1 with Storm 5.0 works fine.

Go to Setup -> Options -> Applications -> highlight Google Maps -> press the Blackberry button and make sure that "Compatibility Mode" is NOT enabled.

And for the GPS with Maps 3.2.1 and Storm OS 5.0, it works fine also...

Setup -> Options -> Advanced Options -> GPS -> GPS Service = Location On and Location Aiding = Enabled.

Storm OS 5.0 and Maps 3.2.1 here.  It's weird.  First I couldn't get past the Terms & Conditions.  Finally after several tries I got past that.  Then I was getting the Tour-like view with half screen map and half screen keyboard that I couldn't fix even with the compatibility mode not enabled.   But eventually after several tries that started working right (and GPS is working fine).  But note that it's still not right.  For example if I want to zoom in, I have to show the keyboard and click on "i" or  "3".  Doesn't make sense on a Storm.

When the Storm has multitouch capabilities then that problem will sort itself by putting two fingers on the screen and spreading them. This will happen on the Droid in Europe but they won't have Turn by Turn. Win some - lose some.

I'm trying to deploy Google Maps using our BES 5.0 server.  I downloaded the "ALX files for BES version 4.1.5 MR1 and up" but when I deploy the application to my Verizon Blackberry Tour it installs Google Maps version 3.0 instead of 3.2.  It is also the touchscreen version instead of keyboard.  Any idea where I can download the proper version?

I am also a BES admin running v5.0 and would like to deploy the new 3.2 version.  When will this be available for BES installation?  I love the new traffic graphics, they are much clearer, but now I need to remove myself from the maps software config so that I can keep the newer version and not have the BES push the older version back on top of my 3.2 download on my handeld.  Please hurry!

Follow up on my comment above.   If you have a Storm (OS 5.0), when you download Maps 3.2.1 be sure your Blackberry browser is emulating Blackberry and not Internet Explorer.   Once I changed that and downloaded again, I got the correct touchscreen version.    The non-touchscreen version is almost unusable on the Storm.
