I love my Google Toolbar. It has the perfect buttons and features for me, and there's always new ones to explore. This morning I downloaded Google Chrome with the intention of having it be my browser. One thing that is keeping me for making the switch completely is bookmarks. The Toolbar bookmark feature is very convenient for me and utilized very frequently. I would like to import all my bookmarks into Chrome, but cannot figure out how to do so. Can anyone help me?
Suggestion: Create a version of the Toolbar for Chrome. At this point it is only available for IE and Firefox. (When something has familiar features, it helps the transition.)
While Google Toolbar is not currently available
for Google Chrome, you can import your bookmarks from Google toolbar -
otherwise I know I'd be lost without my bookmarks. Here's how to do so:
Exporting from Google Toolbar:
1. Sign in to your Google Account by clicking Sign In on the Toolbar. 2. Click the down arrow next to the Bookmarks button. 3. Select Manage All. 4. Select the Tools menu in the uper right-hand corner. 5. Select Export as Bookmarks. 6. Save the file.
Importing to Google Chrome:
1. Click the Tools menu in Google Chrome. 2. Select Bookmark manager. 3. Click the Tools menu in the manager. 4. Select Import bookmarks. 5. Select the HTML file saved from the first step, then click Open.

That was helpful. I want to add one thing, in case others have the same issue I ran into.
I was able to follow the directions until I came to step 5 in exporting. I wasn't able to find "Export as Bookmarks" under the Tools menu. But I did find it on the left column towards the bottom under Bookmarks.
And then after importing it into Chrome, I dragged it's folder onto the Bookmark Bar and renamed it what I wanted.
This still does not help with people who use multiple computers... I like google toolbar because I can have the same bookmarks on all the computers I use without having to export/import or use some sort of sync software. Please help! Matt
I too find it very frustrating that Google did not include support for roaming bookmarks in Chrome, like the Google toolbar provides. This forces me to continue using IE and Firefox on my various computers. When will this feature be added to Chrome?
Will Google Toolbar functionality be available in a future releases of Chrome? Is it in the grand-plan for this application? I would assume so, but have to ask. If so, when should we expect it?
I agree with the rest. I too tried Chrome this week (and Firefox due to the IE security hole) and was shocked to find the toolbar missing and no option available. I ended up using FF because of other Chrome issues (miniscule type with no viable, sticky enlargement option). I can't understand why all the work we put into building our bookmarks in the toolbar would just be thrown out the window when it comes to the new chrome browser. I too have multiple computers and that instant access no matter what machine I am on is for me a large part of toolbar's HUGE appeal -- I can always find what I need by using my google bookmarks. That seems like such a simple concept and such a big advantage for google to have overlooked when building Chrome. Like the others, I am NOT interested in exporting and importing and syncing just to have access to my data and I will not do it except as a rare need might require it. That cross platform, cross machine usability and accessibility IS googles largest strength for all its tools. I can't imagine why google hasn't seen this truth.
I completely agree that it's strange that Google did not include a Google Toolbar or a similar, on-line support in Chrome. This is even more accute as it is not included in the current non-beta version either. I was waiting for a final version with a Toolbar support...
In nearly every other aspect Chrome is what I expected it to be. However this flaw seriously keeps me from installing it on all computers in my reach.
Anyway I find it funny that Google does not let people use its own services in its own browser.
It's great to hear from passionate Toolbar users! :) Thank you all for taking the time to voice your suggestions for improving our products.
I've included a link below to the Google Chrome suggestions page where you can suggest incorporation of your favorite Toolbar features - including Bookmarks. We keep track of the number of these suggestions when making product decisions.
Keep the suggestions coming and have a great holidays!
Like all writers here, I still don't use chrome as my default browser 'cause from some month I began to use google toolbar bookmarks, and my "navigation world" changed. Please add it on chrome... You are the 2.0inc, I thinks maybe obvious have online bookmarks in chrome, like online email, online docs,... thank you!
I would like to add my indignation on this issue. Here I have switched to Chrome, thinking that everytime I bookmarked something on it, it was saved to my Google Bookmarks. Now I realize they're not, and there is no way to get them there.
Chrome is so much safer and faster, but the extreme lack of any useful options is just ridiculous. Really, I'd stay if only I had that damn bookmark ability. Since I don't, I'm switching back to Firefox.
I can't believe Google didn't put this in the product in the first place. For such smart folks, they do some pretty retarded stuff. I can't believe they would make something as useful as their toolbar, and then force me to use browsers by THEIR COMPETITION because they don't put autofill, etc in their *own product*.
Dumb dumb dumb.
PS: I think the same level of intelligence has been given to their "rollout" of Grand Central. Forced me back onto Vonage because of idiotic product decisions.
The only way I've found round this is to bookmark my google bookmarks, and put the bookmark on the chrome bookmark toolbar, so that it's always visible at the top of the browser [you need to set 'always show bookmarks toolbar']. It's not as handy as the google toolbar dropdown list; the order of bookmarks for a start seems random, rather than alphabetical. but it does mean I don't have to re-import every time I add something to my google bookmarks.
It would be so much simpler if they added the google toolbar to chrome!
We really need to have some sort of roaming bookmarks. Google has always surprised me with being ahead of the curve, innovative without the immediate demand for it. This is really disappointing that they couldn't at least incorporate some type of roaming bookmarks. I pretty much can't use this browser because of that very crucial feature. Come on Google, what's up?
Same here. Google toolbar is the only reason I am using firefox, its simply the best addon google ever made. I use it wherever I am, school, home, work, travel. etc. The only thing i miss is a password database for less important sites, like ftp site, web page server, e mail servers, games, programs, power company, phone service provider, etc
I installed Chrome some while ago and could not find a way to get my Google favorites. I was quite upset and uninstalled the product in order to still use mainly Firefox and Opera. I need to work with two browsers quite often and so I need a reliable tool to share bookmarks between workstations and browsers.
I just installed Chrome again, hoping that all was fixed and I see that nothing was solved. I will uninstall again Chrome and wait for the integration of Google tools before giving it a try. Guyz, this is very important when you are an extensive user of the web. Please address the problem quickly before people keep a bad feeling about Chrome.
The Chrome features list is one thing, but this is where the toolbar discussion is. Google toolbar is not a Chrome feature, Chrome is a browser, like Firefox, that Google toolbar should be made to work with. This is a request for the toolbar folks !
Please recognize Chrome as an important browser platform.
I use roaming bookmarks. They aren't available in Chrome or in my G1 phone browser. Google hits the mark most times but really missed it on this. Yes it's a toolbar issue. So, what's up with the toolbar folks? :o) We need you!
where are the link to download GOOGLE toolbar for GOOGLE chrome? i can use google toolbar in lunaspace, firefox, ie and chrome not why?
whatever so dont make publicity in many places for every one change for chrome if it dont work with theyselfs apps. i hope this issue is resolved soon as possible
I don't use the Google Toolbar for Searching, nor do I use it for Bookmarks... I use the "Up" arrow, to traverse levels on webpages, I use it for is visual access to things like the Stock Market (little red, yellow, green "Chart icons"), and sentence Translations (hit a button get a drop-down window to put foreign phrases to translate to English, or the other way), and a quick button for certain RSS Feeds (yes I use Google Reader)..... It's been said so many times before, Google Toolbar is so much more than bookmarks and searching. PLEASE GIVE US OUR Toobar (with our Toolbar Gadgets that I love in IE and Firefox because I can "watch" the stock market all day while I have the browser open!)
Google you totally s!*@#. when it comes to professional software development better leave it to MSFT...at least they provide forward and backward compatibility!!!!
Chrome also have some issues showing asp pages and also certificate management..
and worst of all bookmark manager is exporting bookmarks in an html file. how am i supposed to use an html file to transfer my bookmarks to google toolbar or any other bookmark manager? it has to be separate shortcuts just like microsoft does.. or even an XML for this. a google style of XML for only bookmark transfers , don't know.
also, google toolbar should have an "import bookmarks" option!
i don't know, google messed it up with all these nice but somehow not integrated functionalities in his product range, that makes a common user -like me- just nervous...
I accept that Google Chrome's concept is against Toolbar as Chrome is to replace other browsers that need the Toolbar, but in any case I still find it a joke that Google does not add the features of Toolbar as buttons or something to its own browser. As with many of us the non-existence of Google's own on-line bookmark service is the thing keeping me from using Chrome as my basic browser. Unfortunately I have doubts about Google taking this forum seriously as we have been writing about this shortfall of Chrome for months now, way longer than Chrome became a final version. In my view if Google would put at least some features of Toolbar into Chrome, it could become a very widely used browser. In its current form it is only something that people try and end up using as a secondary or tertiary browser that is started once a week.
Quoting @csasze. Ok chrome against Toolbar, but we can think chrome against cloud web and web apps. Google Bookmarks was one must important web apps for who needs to use many different platform / computer. Chrome without that features have a big lack!
Same Bookmark problems as Safari. You can import your Goggle Bookmarks but Chrome will not automatically sort them. The best solution is to make the Google toolbar available in Chrome (hey, it's Google isn't it?)!
Google bookmarks opened a new world of browsing for me. For information that is important to me, Google, you were upholding your mission, to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Wow, you just took that away from me by making it very cumbersome to use your universal bookmarks with Chrome.
The best work around solution I have found so far is the post on this page from the kolonelpanik that gives the JavaScript that Chrome allows to be run directly from the address bar. It automatically opens a small window that creates a truly universal and roaming bookmark like was intended with Google Bookmarks on your toolbar for other browsers. Make sure to copy the whole script starting with - javascript:(function
The posted JavaScript utilizes all the functionality that you created for Google Bookmarks minus the ability to browse and utilize them without opening the bookmarks management site. We love Google because of its simplicity and functionality. But I think in keeping Chrome simple without bookmarks you have removed a massive amount of functionality. I think you have removed enough functionality that it has outweighed the benefits of switching to Chrome for many of us. Please give us a built in way to access our Google Bookmarks.
I submitted my vote for Google Bookmarks in the Suggest a feature for Google Chrome section of Google Help. And There are a lot of people who use Chrome that are missing out on the information that is important enough to them to bookmark it. They are missing out because it is no longer universally accessible and useful. Please give us a built in way to access our Google Bookmarks.
And for those of you that want it go here and vote for it.
my suggestion would be for them to offer two different copies of Google Chrome, one the clean and simple Chrome, and the other a more fancy, Toolbar Chrome, the odds are good that they already have a working copy somewhere that they are software engineers created as a created Google Chrome, I would hate to think that such good product, cannot be released, and supported by the company whose name is identified with searching for answers.
Hi! I have been happy with Chrome for sometime, but now I am thinking of dropping it altogether. The reason is that I use multiple computers and Google Toolbar does not work with Google Chrome!!!! Seriously, who is responsible for this at Google Inc?????????
I love Google but apparently there are missing a few things, like this Toolbar thing, as well as the Google Groups that is a disaster as well.
Well I agree with the majority of people posting on here. Google Toolbar should have been the first addon for the Chrome browser.
Ive just installed chrome to get the most out of the web experience, however, im going straight back to Firefox with google toolbar. Although firefox is hideously slow it has the addons and features I want.
Why on earth is "Browse by name" not part of Chrome without the toolbar, I thought thats what made Google so great!
I think its quite rich that Google criticises Microsoft that they cannot make a great OS yet have the cheek to release a below par Internet browser.
