My wife and I have only had intermitant access to gmail today. Looking at detailed messages and sending mail has the most problem. What is up? Both firefox and internet explorer have the same problem Is Gmail working on the problem and When will the problem be fixed?
Operating system WinXP: Program and version you use to access both Gmail Firefox and Internet Explorer
Your antivirus software Norton corp edition 10 My ISP is Charter.net
All replies
Down for me also, for the last three or four hours at least.
I have the same problem, can't even access it though IMAP I had setup.
Me too. Since yesterday. Takes several (dozens) of attempts to login on web with FF and IE. Also can access via POP3. Haven't seen anything on CNET, or new search using other search engines. Hmmmmmm...what's the big secret, Google?
Same here. Since last night. I have some pretty big deadlines that I'm going to miss if this isn't fixed. I'm not a happy girl. Figuring out how to report it is impossible...
Things are still not working.. I have to have my Gmail by tomorrow morning first thing.. and I doubt I will. I can't even access it via IMAP - I don't use pop. And on top of it, we're migrating people to Google Apps ---- yeah maybe that's not a good idea.
Same here. It has been acting up for the last 30hrs. I was also going to have people change over to Google Apps and i had them testing gmail to see if they liked. Google please fix ASAP. Thanks.
I also have a problem logging into Gmail this morning.
Server ErrorThe server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
Me, too. Sometimes I can't open GMail at all in IExplorer 8 or FireFox 3.5, especially in HTTPS mode. Sometimes have had to go to basic HTML to access. Other times very slowwww loading and hard to compose and send messages. I started having this problem a day or so ago but it has increased on Oct. 30.
I can access my Yahoo email account with no problem and also other web pages, so the problem is with Google.
Operating system: Windows XP
Your antivirus software (e.g. Norton 2007): norton 360
Internet Connection: Charter Boradband Cable.
According to the Apps Status Dashboard -- Available from the "Post a question" page, there aren't any status problems with Gmail. The problem you encounter is -- as it says -- a temporary error and is probably fixed by now.
If it is not, post here again and say how long the problem has been there for your account.
Ken Maglio,
Google Apps paying version has live 24/7 phone support and guaranteed uptime -- but I guess you already know that because you collected this information before you started moving people over. But then I don't understand why you posted what you posted here.
climber.dhl,
Please read my reply to Ken Maglio above.
Mine is down too. I can't log in since 09:00 (gmt +2). It's really annoying not to be able to take your mails. Is there an ETA for this?
Still can't access gmail for over 6 hours now - at least. Error 502...
Same here, been going on for about 12 hours, but only for one account; another one is just fine.
Relatedly, the standalone google talk application will load and log me in, but not display any contacts.
I am having problems also since yesterday, 10/30/09. 502 Server Error Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
I have a project due this morning. I need access to my account pronto!
Still getting the "temporary" server error. This has been going on for about 14 hours now. SOMETHING is drastically wrong, and needs to be looked into ASAP.
Anyone from Google support even reading this? :(
I'll let a Google employee know about this problem.
Thanks Gravi. Soon please!
Gravi, I know the paid version has support, thank you for that information, and yes as you stated I already did know that. The reason I was saying this is because in the last year Google has had more outages then ever before. It's not a good feeling, and now having my personal emails down, which yes I use for business emails, so I don't have 3-4 gmail accounts I have to check (which I am converting over to doing actually), now I'm completely down, can't work, which I had a server migration planned this morning and about 10-15 Google Apps account creations lined up for my customers.. So now.. I can't do any of it.. and to sign up our clients too Google Apps, makes it a little hard to swallow, when I can't even access my email.
PS. Not all my customers opted in for the paid version, at least not yet. I'll be recommending this to them, you can count on it.
This issue is still going on. I haven't been able to successfully complete anything with my two gmail accounts. I've tried both Firefox and IE, Vista and XP, and home and work PCs. I believe the problem started (or was noticed) on either late the 29th or early the 30th. If this is only happening to specific accounts and isn't a general issue, please add mine to the list of "Please help!" :)
PPS. If it helps, I'm occasionally getting this error message in Firefox, not the other browsers.
We're sorry. It seems there is a problem. Please try using Gmail with a supported browser.
If you're encountering this error while using a supported browser, we
suggest alerting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that a proxy is
failing to accept cookies on HTTP redirects.
Click here to return to Gmail. You'll need to sign in to your account again.
Ken Maglio,
I agree that this year there has been a higher number of outages than in the years before. I see you posted about IMAP in the other discussion, I'll forward that info as well, thanks.
If you have problems with or questions about Google Apps, there's a help forum especially for that forum, I linked it below.
lookie13,
"Where do I find detailed instructions for setting up the IMAP connection? How long do you think it will take google to fix this issue?"
IMAP has to be enabled in the web interface of Gmail so as long as you don't have access, you can't do it unfortunately. I linked a few help pages for you at the end of my reply.
In my experience, Google is fast at fixing problems like this. I don't know how the weekend influences their response speed.
PPPS .. hehe one more thing - hopefully to help.. I do have force redirect to https (SSL) turned on.
I've gotten the same error in all three browsers on my PC (firefox 3.5, IE7, Chrome), and have cleared the temp files and rebooted to see if that will bear any fruit (it hasn't).
Gravi - posted this on other thread - however IMAP does not work either.. outlook simply doesn't retrieve emails, it completes in a second or less.
OK, thanks. If there is anything else, do post it here.
Will do - I'm also contacting ATT (my DSL provider here in MO, US) - just to see if there's any possibility of them changing anything (the whole "we
suggest alerting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that a proxy is
failing to accept cookies on HTTP redirects.") .. atm I'm connected to tier 1 in a chat session.. so I probably wont get anywhere. But I'll let you know.
Gravi, for what it's worth, I cannot access my Gmail in ANY browser (Safari, Firefox, Camino) OR via IMAP from Mail.app or my iPhone (either over wifi or 3G.) Getting close to 15 hours now.
gravi T, I do have gmail on my blackberry - didn't realize it was an IMAP application. I am not getting my gmail on my blackberry either. FYI!
Saw this in another post - wanted to confirm it's the same for me.. Google Talk - will sign-in however no contacts are listed.
Ken - my Gchat is loading fine through Adium; seems to be the only thing that IS working the last two days.
gravi T, Since you seem to know - I upgraded my gmail account for extra storage. I pay $20 a year for this privilege. Would it make sense for me to upgrade to the premier gmail apps account in order to get the 24 hour support?
@kurt - I have iChat on my Mac, and unfortunately - it's the same thing, none of my buddies show up.
BTW - this appears only to be gmail services from google. I can open google voice, docs, calender, reader - without fail.
lookie13,
Paid storage and Google Apps are two different things. Paid storage is added t oyour normal Gmail account (and the services you use with that username -- Docs, Picasa etc.).
Google Apps is "email for your domain". You can create a number of email accounts for that domain. Paying version of Google Apps is $50 per user per year. Google Apps does not contain all the services a normal Google account does. You can read more about it at and in the Google Apps help forum -- I posted a link to that above.
@Ken M - The standalone chat thing is baffling; says I'm logged in and available, but is otherwise blank, and doesn't maintain any status message changes. My secondary gmail account is just fine in 3 of 3 browsers, so it seems unlikely that this is a client-side issue.
Oh! Now I see the problem ! http://tinyurl.com/yp6jo2
Ken, Cute! I needed the comedic relief. I am just cleaning up files on my computer until gmail comes back up. I hope its soon - I have a deadline!
I try - I figured we could use a laugh.. playing Aion :)
side note: google toolbar gmail icon - when you click the down arrow - it as well says "Refresh (Error)"
yah ,i m also facing problem connecting through IMAP..
Gravi, it looks like it's been about an hour and a half since Google was notified of the issue - any updates?
I've been unable to log in to gmail (though reader/wave/etc are fine) for over 13 hours at this point. 502 error.
same here since this morning: Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
SERVER Error 502 for the last 12 hours!!! this is definitely bad!
I have not been able to log in for over 14 hours due to the 502 temporary error
Gravy - Any update from google themselves that you've heard? This is really getting to be a bad outage
Is ANYONE out there listening?
How come the google apps dashboard says there are no problems? http://www.google.com/ appsstatus#hl=en
I don't think a google employee even knows about the issue to be honest. It's horrible that a forum is the only way we can contact them about issues. It's as easy as ignoring or not checking the forums to find problems.
I have no doubt that gravi T contacted google but that doesn't mean someone got the message. Very frustrating! I would pay extra for 24 hour service.
I powered-off my cable modem, waited 60 seconds, started up everything, and that worked for me.
Well I found a - submit and error form by digging into their support site.. maybe then they'll see it.. here's how ... Go here. http://mail.google.com/ support/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs Scroll to bottom.
Under Loggin In - Click the "see article" for Temporary Error 502 Pick problem relates to "logging in" click "I cannot access my account" pick "Loading Issues" pick "Another Problem or Error" "temporary 502" then in the phrase "please let us know so we can look into the issue." click "let us know"
fill out the form, us a different email, post the link to this forum post..
@Gromitt - tried that about oh 5 times now.
I've had no access to gmail since last night around 7:30pm EST. I am getting the same error messages (temporary error 502), and I have tried different browsers, operating systems, and mobile devices. I am feeling sad and frustrated now; I am trying to get to our documents for our first mortgage.
Still no gmail after 14 hours at least...
Ken, I submitted the issue last night. It asks for the email address - if they sent me an email - I would know!
@ken maglio thanks for posting, i don't seem to have "see article" for temporary error 502. did that yield anything concrete for you? any updates from anyone else? argh.
Problem all day accessing my crucial email account.
502 Server Error Server Error The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
Worried....
same problem here -- one account works fine, the other has been getting the "Temporary Error" page for over 12 hours. Different computers, different browsers, same results.
this line "Under Loggin In - Click the "see article" for Temporary Error 502" was a mistake ;) and no it wasn't anything other then - try again later.. everythings okay with your account though... don't worry.
Everyone... please file a report on the problem at this web address: http://mail.google.com/ support/bin/request.py?contact_type=direct&hl=en&group=bugflow_signinnewbug
If enough people file a report google will respond. If anybody hears from them please post it here.
I've also been getting the same error since last night. Only gmail/gchat is down, my iphone won't work and my adium connects me and shows no buddies. This is driving me insane.
I echo all the problems listed above.
I've used the link above to notify Google about the problem and pasted a link to this forum. I told them it would be very reassuring to hear back from them soon.
Is there any way to contact Google via phone other than the pay service listed above?
Hehe- my wife's account is the same.... she just checked.
@Avtar00 - Nope only way is here or through the link Nobody posted
This is the longest it's ever been down for me. Sigh.
Same here, Mareelynn. I've been reporting it since yesterday evening but all's been quiet from Google. The worst part is, no one I know who has Gmail is experiencing the problem. This is ridiculous.
Everyone please post - as I'm interested - the other post here in the forums is dealing with DNS issues... What provider for internet is everyone using and what state are you in? AT&T DSL MO
Other thread: http://www.google.com/support/ forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=12d35b18b71c5bdf&hl=en
Time Warner Cable NY, as well.
I'm having trouble with the 502 error as well. I haven't been able to access my account since about 8pm last night. I've tried using Firefox, Safari, and my Iphone - none of them are working. Help!
Same problem. Server Error 502. For approx. 10 hours.
Verizon Fios; Silver Spring, MD/Washington, DC
Verizon at work, Cox at home, AT&T for my iPhone. All three are no go since 7:30pm EST on 10/30.
18 hours!!! Server ErrorThe server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
I get the 502 Server Error both on my blackberry and on my laptop. it's been about 14 hours or so now.
i have had this problem since 430 AM. Operating system: Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 Program and version you use to access Gmail: Firefox
Your antivirus software: None My ISP is Windstream
IS ANYBODY AT GOOGLE LISTENING
I haven't had access since last night. I'm using mac os x 10.6, AT&T is my ISP, Safari 4.0.3 is my browser, and I don't use any antivirus software.
I haven't been able to get email all day. VERY frustrating. I can't send or receive mail on my iPhone. It tells me I have an error in my user name or password. But it's the same one that worked yesterday, of course. Eudora on my PC can't get in. When I try to access my mail on the website I can get into my account but when I try to go to the Gmail page, I get the 502 error. I tried accessing my mail on my MiFi wireless network, as well as my usual Verizon DSL house connection. And I tried accessing it on my husband's Mac as well as my PC. Could not get my mail any way I tried. This has got to be a Google problem, not a problem on my end - because my husband is having NO problem getting his Gmail!
Any feedback from ANY Google employee?? I can't access my main gmail address for the past 18 hours and I reported the problem directly twice... I had a gmail account since early 2004 and this is the first time this happens. The lack of feedback from Google and the length this problem is persisting is causing me to lose trust in this service very quickly though....
it's been out for me since 17:00 CET this Saturday
I have had an 502 Error for 12 hours today (October 31), have tried all sorts of advice and have posted three notices with gmail help and want to know IF THERE IS ANYONE IS AT GMAIL TO HELP! I'm reading all these comments by others going thru the same thing and feeling we are very abandoned by GMAIL. All my work is tied into this and this is awful. Someone at Gmail, Please help!
Same problem here, I'm in Nevada, using Mac OSX, tried safari and firefox. It's something on there end for sure. It's been out for almost 2 days now.
I have not been able to access email on one of my google hosted domains for about 20 hours now. The error is the same as what people are posting here. 502 server error. I've tried on Safari and Firefox. IMAP and POP access returns an error of "invalid credentials."
Addendum: I can access other email accounts on the same google hosted domain, from the same computer. Just not my email account.
Same problem continues --in Boston. I've tried on Safari and Firefox. I can access other email accounts on the same google hosted domain, from the same computer. Just not my email account. 24 hours now!
I'm still having the same problem. Load time is slow or not at all, and once I'm in, I can't send or delete, receive, etc. I've cleared my cache, updated browsers, all that Google recommends as a trouble shoot. I cannot work like this, and I NEED to get some emails taken care of. This is going on day two for me. I'm over the 30 hour mark of problems. I also want to note that I cannot access problem reporting pages either. This seems to be the only place I can reach for help. All other web sites are loading as normal.
very very odd! still huge problems!
This is absolutely ridiculous... I'm going to look for service else where.. screw converting client to google apps, screw the andriod phone from verizon I was going to go to (from iPhone). What a horrid company.. It's not the fact that it's broken, the fact that it's been down this long.. it's the fact that NO ONE FROM GOOGLE HAS EVEN POSTED ON THESE FORUMS -- There's now 5 threads of this going on the forums and only one time did a google employee respond, and it was just a simple question of "can you access other google applications" then nothing else.. I've about had it ----
I've been having the same issue since midnight last night - it is now 6:15pm EST on Oct. 31st. Anyone know who we can bug to get this moving? Looks like they're attempting something new on the weekend
??
I am having issues as well since yesterday afternoon. I reported it yesterday. This is getting ridiculous!
Does anyone know anyone who can get the news there and do something??? at least tell us when to expect that it will be resolved!
Well I just found out that Microsoft offers emails to domains (like google apps) .. Called Windows Live Admin Center. I'm sure when the release Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2010 for the web - (to compete with google apps) you'll have all the same functionality.
Windows Live Admin Center is also down as we speak. Any updates regarding our mail in Google? I feel like a part of me is taken hostage. Seriously guys...
We have the same problem - no google no gmail, but everything else works. Weird! We've done a restart, we've emptied our cache. We have called charter and everything is fine with ISP it's just google. "Ken Maglio, Google Apps paying version has live 24/7 phone support and guaranteed uptime" I have the paing version but can't find a phone #. Wanna give that to me?
GOOOOOOGLE!!!!! HEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!
You need to find your support pin - Manage this Domain - Support 1-800-598-3901 or
1-650-253-7875
I noticed something new for Google Apps... Organize your inbox.. It's basically three persistent labels you can assign (kinda from the getting things done) Follow-Up, Misc, Priority. I got some new pop-up which I think was just put there this weekend.
Does anyone know how to actually contact Google? I have also had the Server 502 error message all day today - since 8 am Eastern. My business is also tied to Gmail as several others have noted and this is costing us $$
Here's the deal - I called one of my customers premier account google apps support number, no one's in the office - they aren't there on the weekends. Only issues which are effect half your domain's users from gmail or calendar will get a 1 hour response, else every other issue will be handled by email during normal working hours (m-f). So it looks like unless an employee is willing to take a look at this out of the kindness of their hearts - go do something else.. and maybe by monday afternoon / night - we'll have our email back. I just give up.. have fun - I'm going to go play Aion.
@mjwitse: Unless you are using google apps premier ($50/email/year) then you basically you're in the same boat. I guess they are starting to show us like every other company - that unless you pay - you get shitty service, and unreliable service. I just didn't think google would get there honestly. But now I know - and really shame on all of us for relying on a personal, free service.. Now for all of you who have google apps paid accounts (not the increased storage for gmail) you can get help, you deserve to have someone tend to this immediately (rather within an hour).
thanks ken. unbelievable that a company that large doesn't have personnel on staff for this over a weekend. i would love to see a news organization write this up. this isn't the first time. if you google for news on the 502 error message, there are previous stories. all of us should re-evaluate using gmail for business purposes.... not good. we can all hope that their business day starts early tomorrow.
Thought I'd add to the chorus. Seems like a lot of people are affected. I assume no one on here has heard anything? Very frustrating.
@mjwitse - and we were supposed to migrate our customers over to google apps (about 15-20 new accounts) this weekend. I'm almost too disgusted to even do it at this point.. I know it's different - and for me at least this is the free product... I would expect - and maybe someone who has a google apps premium account which is effected... could tell us if you've called them and they've actually fixed it or told you what's going on....
Over 24 hours now with no access and no comment from Google.
okay this is day three for me and i have a ton of work to do. how much longer until google gets off the rear ends and fixes the issue. the thing that really gets me is instead of "manning-up," google keeps saying that it is an issue with my internet connection. this is the only site not working for me, so how is it my internet connection???
I would imagine that one the google employees has to know this is going on, I would assume they have gmail too, which means they don't have email service either. If they don't have gmail what do they have cause maybe we should all switch to them, because obviously they are more reliable. Nice to know google cares about its customers!
me too same problem...24h no access...I have three notifications to google no answer yet
same problem! 502 server error!! what happened?
Me too. I'm in London, have had no access now for roughly past 24hrs. Have filled in a support form to Google with an alternate email for them to contact me on but no reply yet. This is really bad! I urgently need to access my mail for work now.
Does anyone know of any other way of contacting Google? Any phone numbers?
This is absolutely ridiculous. I also have not been able to log into my mail for over 24 hours. I've filled out the support form twice and nothing has been fixed. I desperately need to access my email! So incredibly frustrated right now.
I've gotten this same issue with my alisonwu.uci account, but 2 other of my gmail accounts are perfectly normal and accessible. I haven't accessed this email for a year, so I don't know if that's an issue... but there's information in it that I need... I'm on west coast, CA, network is supported by COX
I wonder if this issue is all over the web. I am sure google would not want this kind of bad publicity. No email support on weekends? Are you kidding me? If it were Monday through Friday this would have been fixed quickly. Well guess what google, people work 24/7 with their email. We expect you to be there to support us 24/7. This is really unacceptable.
Well I just sent in a request for my local news company to take a look at this forum, and to do a story. I doubt it will have any impact. But this is just unacceptable that a company the size of Google... just goes home on the weekends. Hell that's when my business get's ahead of everyone else, and we do most of our work uninterrupted.
@ alisowu: If you have the paid accounts for your google app domain.. you can call support and supposedly get someone working on it in an hour. Manage your Domain >> Support I posted the phone numbers above and you'll need the information on that support page.
Hmmm.. maybe this is what's going on at Google.. http://tinyurl.com/yetmzpn
welcome to the club rghosn
Going to bed - we'll see what happens over night - good luck everyone
Can't access my gmail account neither for more than 24 hours now. Please fix it asap...
Apparently to save costs Google do not have sufficiant IT trouble shooting staff on at the weekends. They have told the press that Gmail is a free service and so any complaints just get binned. Thanks Google.
More than 30 hours without email...totally unacceptable. I'll definitely have to reconsider my selection of gmail for my primary email account. It may be I have to pay for an account but hell will freeze over before I pay one penny to Google after this debacle.
Seems it has happened before... http://www.theregister.co.uk/ 2009/09/01/gmail_titsup_google/
Good post Dilbert but not exactly the same outage as this weekends. First of all, September 1 was a Tuesday. Google ees were around so they fixed the problem the same day. Second, the IMAP protocol also does not work. So if you thought you would still be able to receive email through your iphone, blackberry, thunderbird, outlook etc., you are wrong. Absolutely and completely unacceptable. Everyone should write to the local newspaper along with the main channels. I am sure google would not appreciate the publicity BUT it might motivate them to keep staff 24/7 which is EXACTLY what you would expect from a company that is serving millions of customers. It might be free for us to use this service but we do know it is a source of revenue for gmail AND they are growing and investing in this business model.
I blogged about this at scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=428. What's more infuriating than the outage itself is the lack of any acknowledgment or response from Google, more than 30 hours into this debacle. That "No issues" checkmark in the Apps Status Dashboard is an insult to everyone who's lost an entire weekend, simply because they made the mistake of trusting Google not to suck. I agree with lookie13: if you're affected then contact the press, blog about this, don't let Google dismiss it as "minor" or "affecting only a small subset of users." It matters because Google's silence speaks directly to its credibility as a company.
Gmail and Gchat seems to be up now. I wish Google would let us know what happened.
Gmail is still down for me and it's been down for more than 24 hours already. No response or comment from Google. I'm based in Israel so today is a regular business day and it will definitely hurt me to have no email access. I've contacted the local Israeli media to let them know.
Some media about this is already out there: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/01/halloween_gmail_outage_reported/
same problem here (Denmark)
I am in South Africa and have been receiving this error 502 message since Friday evening. Google claims to have 5 mail servers. Lot of good it does you if you cannot connect to any of them. Yes the most frustrating aspect is that you cannot get hold of anyone at Google. I do suspect that some of the people answering on this forum are indeed Google employees so they are probably busy with it. Maybe it is just wishful thinking but Google should have an update somewhere and as people read they could have a map of the world to see who is still receiving this message. Maybe then they can track down what is going on and why it is happening. Just a thought.
The same problem in Russia!
I see this message since Saturday.
My business e-mail is unavailable I can not make any deliveries to my clients.
How long would it take to resolve this problem?
Server ErrorThe server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.
Please try again in 30 seconds.
Same issue in South Africa, i have been waiting for 30 hours now. my gmail account is still unavailable and no one is getting us somewhere with this issue. but i am glad i am not the only one facing this issue at this particular moment. Google PLEASE HELP. this is crucial for all of us.
For those who use free gmail then I think you have to learn to take the rough with the smooth. You get a lot for nothing, but sometimes there will be downtime.
Hearing that a free email account is 'crucial' makes me think you have your priorities wrong. If your mail is that crucial for you then go to a paid service with a guaranteed SLA.
If you are using a paid gmail account then kick up a ton of fuss - they promise 99.99 uptime, it's in the SLA so make them deliver it.
btw, my corporate (paid) and personal (free) accounts have been fine all weekend so it's easy for me to be calm about it.
I have had this problem now for close to 30 hours. I can get on with another gmail account sometimes, but generally, i am completely locked out on chrome, firefox, and internet explorer. I am surprised that gmail's support team is so unresponsive.I've been down before but NEVER for this long.
I have the same problem since more than 24 HOURS!I can log on igoogle but no mail even from the applet in the igoogle page. I also tried other browsers (I have chrome). It is working from the same platform with other accounts but not with mine,. I tried different connections but there is no way.
The 502 problem for me has lasted 24 hours, I'm in West Africa. I've followed this discussion all yesterday, written in it a couple times, written to gmail help a couple time, tried to call to a machine that redirects me here - no response from google at all, which is shockingly unbelievable, and shows how fragile 'all' this is and how vulnerable we are.
In London and down for over 24 hours - I do volunteer admin for a sports team and run everything through GMail - total nightmare as I can't pick up any team lists, send anything out etc. Have filled out the forms a couple of times, but nothing - has anyone tried calling the Googleplex on their 'Contact Us' main number (Job section i think) and pointing out the story in the Reg? Complaints probably won't get us anywhere but a lot of bad press might provoke a response. Have had my account since the beta release in 2004 and am seriously considering moving provider - not because of the fail itself but because Google refuse to respond on a weekend unless half its users couldn't get in. Hey Google, what happened to caring about the little people? Or customer service?
I don't have the problem but feel for you. Reminds me of the time they locked my account (and a few hundred others), they eventually unlocked it but never would tell me why they did to begin with. Also, you would think that 100+ replies to a thread in 2 days would set off an alarm? Like the one that is supposedly in the gmail office that goes off when things cascade fail? Maybe some emails & txt's to staff?
Kim - here's the first bit of negative media about this and I hope more will follow if that's what will get google to actually respond:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/01/gmail_titsup_google
I've submitted this story to Slashdot:
http://slashdot.org/ submission/1105483/Gmail-users-howl-over-Halloween-outage
Please go there and vote the story up!
I've also emailed everyone I know who works at Google.
I've never seen anything like this sort of unresponsiveness in my life: a major outage lasting over 36 hours, and apparently no one at the wheel.
I can't access my gmail account since yesterday morning - more than 24 hours now. This is not acceptable!!! Is someone look into this problem or not? Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've sumbitted the story to digg. Digg it up here http://digg.com/tech_news/ Gmail_users_howl_over_Halloween_outage
I couldn't access my gmail account starting on the 30th around noon Kenya time and I haven't been able to access it since. It's been days now! Why is no one from google making a statement or telling us that they are working on fixing it? I do feel better to read others are having the same problem, but this is completely unacceptable!
Somebody's reading this forum, because the other thread I started with the express purpose of being cranky, has been deleted. (entitled "gFail: Is anyone at google even reading these forums?") How about a little less quiet editorial work and a lot more fixing of actual problems, folks?
Still down : ( ( i have written to my university to complain. they had put down the host server for our emails and asked us to forward our mail to gmail!!! totally unacceptable when you gmail becomes your primary mail upon the support of your institution and then when it is down no one is there to take care of it or even let you know when the problem will be fixed!
I called and filled out a web form. Got an automated response, then a real response several hours later:
================ Hi,
Thank you for calling and reporting this issue.
We are working on resolving this issue as a top priority. As soon as we have an update, we will keep you posted.
Thanks,
Elliot Enterprise Support
================
Go gets 'em, Elliot!
I'll post any updates I get.
Adding my name to the number of users who have been unable to access gmail since Friday evening. 502 error message. Doesn't work on Firefox, Safari, or iPhone.
I have the same problem since 30.10 morning, already more than 30 hours. Anyone has any comments from google?
No comments anywhere. Hopefully on Monday someone will see the problem.
In support of an earlier post, it is completely understandable a problem like this can arise, but Google's handling, or failure to even acknowledge the problem for some 40 hours is unforgivable. I initially wasted several hours yesterday trying to fix a computer problem that didn't exist. This waste of time could have been avoided had Google been more forthcoming with information about their outage.
That's a bit strange, I have 3 accounts with gmail.com, and 2 of them work. But the one I need most doesnt. what a bad luck!
same for my daughter's account. all other accounts of the family are doing fine ... please help :-)
one more account stopped working through web interface, pop access still ok. Seems the situation has worsened
can't login to any account now, but 502 error gone :))) seems they started doing something :)))))))))))) HOPE to get an access soon
Well at least skbp has gotten some type of response from Google Techs. It's kinda an acknowledgment.
I am getting the same error. I am thinking we wont see anything until Monday morning - Seattle time. Gosh I do hope not!
If I was a betting man - I'd say we won't have any acknowledgment here on the forums until Monday. Then it might take all of Monday, or hours at least - to then have us back up and working.
it means in europe we'll get access at tuesday midnight :((((
I'm kind of glad to know that i'm not the only person with this problem. But of course sad to be among so many with the same desperate need to log in to our account. I have to log in within 5 hours, or I might loose a job-opportunity... Please fix problem soon!
seriously going through withdrawal - haven't had access to my gmail since friday night around 8. this is ridiculous. I feel like throwing things at the google building on my way to work tomorrow.
I haven't been able to access my gmail account in 3 days. After logging in it comes to a screen that says : "Server Error. The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds." 3 days! This is my only email address and i'm supposed to be working this weekend. This is my second major issue with gmail and I'm about to jump ship. I can't even figure out how to report it. Granted the last time I had an issue I never even got a response when I did report it. I'm just assuming my account is gone at this point. No bueno google.
I have also experienced the same problem - server error 502 - since Friday evening, October 30, 2009. My husband can access his gmail from the same computer, but I cannot access my gmail. Extremely frustrating. Does google read this blog? How do we notify google and expect a response from them?
This is so frustrating! I've been trying to access my email account for the past 3 days and keep getting a bloody 502 message. The worst part is that the only thing we can apparently do, is just sit and wait! I need my account for university, work and other side projects. Much of it involves very strict deadlines. :( I've sent two error reports to gmail and they still haven't even acknowledged my problem! I'm seriously considering transferring my account elsewhere and I had just been telling my tutor how brilliant the service is :(
Everyone... please file a report on the problem at this web address: http://mail.google.com/ support/bin/request.py?contact_type=direct&hl=en&group=bugflow_signinnewbug
If enough people file a report google might respond. If anybody hears from them please post it here.
I finally got my Gmail service back but it was out All day Friday and Saturday. Still no word from Google....
@swisherdhv: You can't contact anyone.. That's the point, this forum is the only point of contact for us "free" users. If you have a google apps premium account ($50/year) - then you can call them - else you're screwed.
Still no service for me ;(
I have also had a 502 Server Error Message since Friday night. I NEED MY EMAIL for tomorrow, work deadlines rapidly approaching. I emailed Google and have received nothing from them. Anyone else have any luck getting their account back up that had the alleged "temporary" error??
@amrita: Nope.. it's not even recognized by them officially that there is even an outage.
48 hours with no Gmail. This is getting really frustrating
Most of my friends with Gmail accounts are still functioning and there are aren't that many comments on this forum. Is there any indication as to how many of us are really without service? Based on Google's total lack of response it probably isn't a large percentage of users.
I've tried accessing my email account through both Outlook and the Google webpage Gmail link and on three different computers without success. Friends who have emailed me are receiving automated messages that delivery to my account has been delayed and delivery will be reattempted for two days.
At this point I'm guessing the situation will be rectified sometime Monday at the soonest. I'll probably retain my account but I'm very disillusioned with Googles lack of customer service and I'm considering migrating my primary account to another provider.
Under no circumstances will I reward Google by signing up for their premium service.
I'm having the same issues. Been out of service for 48+ hours. I have lots of school work on there. Hopefully tomorrow will be the day (if not sooner, of course). If anyone finds anything that helps please post it on here!
I have the problem too sinds Friday. I come from the Netherlands. I also get the 502 message and cannot acces my gmail account for three days now. Other Gmail adresses I can acces.
I'm expecting important emails!
@ Ken, Thanks. I've filled out two support forms that were allegedly sent to Google, my guess is that it won't do anything though. How can we storm the castle or something and get them to NOTICE this problem!
I have a couple different accounts and one is down and the others are not. I access them all from one account - and that account isn't getting any messages from the down one.
Apparently 502 server error is the new black. I have been unable to access my mail and been getting this "temporary error" message for the past two days. I've used Gmail as my primary, almost sole account for both personal and work related activity. Needless to say that I regret it and will be migrating to a different service as soon as (if ever) I get my dress book back. Too bad
Anybody know for sure whether our email and other stuff will still be there? I had a friend email me and got the Message Delivery Delay message. Although I am very upset about not being able to work and finish projects etc I have a "peace" thinking that my emails will be there when we are up again. Is this faulting thinking on my part? Is this just a small subgroup of email users?
They should be there-the articles all say that even though there's an error message all the emails are in there, safe. Now it's just a matter of actually getting to READ them.
@Lookie: given our emails become available soon, what the delayed email auto-response is trying to do is que the emails, so when they can be delivered, the systems will automatically deliver them.. However since we're down 100% right now, they can't even be delivered. Catch 22 - if our email isn't back up before the auto attempt to deliver "times out" (e.g. 5 tries) .. then you won't get that email, but the person sending it -- will get a notice of failure.
This is ridiculous... guess I will have to check out Yahoo mail. Just after I talked my wife into using gmail so we're tied to our ISP.
I don't think anyone believes Gmail won't be fixed and fixed fairly soon. However, this is an excellent moment for all to reconsider their reliance on web-based services like Gmail to maintain contact lists and the only copies of their emails. Many people take pot shots at Outlook but I maintain my contacts on my computer in Outlook and I have access to all my emails there as well. As a result, this weekend has only been an annoyance for me since I have most of what I need available to me for work and I can use my secondary email address to receive critical emails.
If this outage doesn't make large segments of users reconsider their choice of relying only a web-based email service, it will be either because not many people were impacted, or because Google manages to keep this event off the news radar.
If this outage continues into Monday all bets will be off as Gmail users return to work and many find they are unable to access their emails.
Just to say that my main gmail address has now been impossible to reach for almost 36 hours - since Saturday morning 09.00 GMT. Same 502 Server Error message that other people are using. Very frustrating!
Have not been able to access my account for at least 30 hours. Neither the web nor the pop works.
Do you think there is a chance Google will provide us any indemnity for the damage they caused? I think they should!
almost 2 days now Can't access my urgent emails...this is ridiculous!!! most frustrating thing
In addition to the reporting the problem to Google via this link: http://mail.google.com/ support/bin/request.py?contact_type=direct&hl=en&group=bugflow_signinnewbug
You can send a feedback to google here (which they say is not for problem reporting): http://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=survey&forum=1&hl=en
Almost 42 hours without email. This is absolutely, unbelievably ridiculous. And the WORST part is there is absolutely no way to vent this frustration to Google except for this forum and automated feedback forms. Being without email for two entire days is entirely unacceptable.
almost 2 days now I can't access my urgent emails...this is ridiculous!!! What can I do? My life is on gmail!! please
help me!
I need my gmail back!
Cynthia
nobody.home.123,
The second link you posted is a feedback form about the Gmail help pages themselves, and as you said, they are not for reporting problems. The first link you posted is alright.
@gravi
I disagree; nobody.home.123 and everyone else, use that second link about the help pages and let Google know that these forums are completely effing useless in terms of getting problems resolved.
My email account has been down since approx 5.15pm Friday tried my iphone, my work computer, lap top, friends blackberries and just get the same response on all
'Server Error The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request.
Please try again in 30 seconds'
I use it like many others for my work and could be in serious trouble come work tomorrow as I was expecting some very important messages that needed immediate responses- totally unacceptable.
Hope it is fixed soon.
I wrote in all caps when I sent my feedback from the second link nobody.home.123 provided. That's my online version of yelling. Too bad no one will EVER READ IT. Let's all please just keep using that second link and saying we are "Very Dissatisfied." That HAS to set off some sort of alarm or something to Google that there's a problem.
@amrita - You'd think that a thread in their OWN "help" forums with over 200 replies would be enough to get some attention. Almost is enough to make me go back to Hotmail for godsake
Does anyone else see the irony in having to provide Gmail with a Yahoo or Hotmail address for their responses to the Gmail help request form...or do we just list the gmail account that doesn't work? ;)
@vlp-haha i agree. I also think it's completely counterproductive, seeing as how they say they won't email us unless they have a question for us. Too bad WE are the ones that have questions for THEM-such as, why do you insist on sucking so hard google??
I also haven't been able to access Gmail since sometime on Friday (two days), either on my PC or mobile device. On the PC I get: Temporary
Error (500)
We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily
unavailable. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying
again in a few minutes. If the issue persists, please visit the Gmail Help Center Try Again Sign Out Under "Detailed Technical Info" it says Numeric Code: 93 Firefox 3.5.3, Windows XP Pro SP3 On the mobile device it just asks me to re-enter my password over and over (Windows Mobile 5). I submitted an error report to Gmail Support this morning.
Mine has been down for 36 hours plus. IMAP also doesn't work. Extremely frustrating and causing me to not be able to work.
So I can't access my gmail account but my daughter can..... maybe only certain servers are down?
I thought I would share my frustration with the world,

Hi Everyone, Thank you for posting your reports here. Our team has acknowledged this service disruption on the Apps Status Dashboard at http://www.google.com/appsstatus. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this issue may have caused. All updates for this issue will be posted on the Apps Status Dashboard, so we highly recommend following the updates there. We're working to restore account access for affected users as soon as possible. Thanks for your continued patience and support. Sincerely, Chris The Google Team
@Daiva
thanks for the update, chris!
I have a free account and I get the same "502 error" since last 48 hours and nothing seems to happens. Maybe is the moment to ask ourselves if we really believe that free services can be reliable as can be the paid services. As for the google aps services if the things are the same then this is totally inaceptable.
It's wonderful to hear from Team Google.
I checked and the Apps Status dashboard finally indicates a disruption of service for today but no disruption of email service for either 10-30-09 or 10-31-09. However I lost service sometime around 5pm on the 30th AS DID MANY OTHER USERS. After two days of resounding silence by Google those two green checks for the 30th and 31st are somewhat annoying.
Longest 30 seconds ever!!!!! AAARGHH!!!
Daiva - thanks for FINALLY responding to our complaints. I think the major complaint now beyond the fact that our gmail accounts are inaccessible for the past +48 hours is that it took Google just as long to respond to what seems to be a major problem negatively affecting quite a number of people.
Hope you manage to fix both the technical issues as well as the response time issues.
In the same boat as everyone. Service had been out for me on Gmail and GoogleTalk since around 5pm on the 30th. Very frustrating. Has anyone manage to regain access to their account since Chris responded?
It's not fair. The problem exists from 30th of October!
Just watch this page.. 6pm (CST) they'll have another update for us. http://www.google.com/ appsstatus#rm=1&di=1&hl=en
oh and only a thousandth of a percent of users are effected -- supposedly.
astrolabos is completely right.
Daiva, could you change the Apps Status for October 30th and 31st to "Service Disruption," to reflect the reality of what we've been through? Thank you!
My mail is working again, but it appears that everything that was delivered during the outage is not in my inbox. I know I should have at least some facebook notifications etc.... Does that means I have emails just floating out there in the ether?!?!?
Almost 2 days with no access...I very disappointed with google =/
Less than 0.001% of Gmail users are affected by this issue. You guys have 146 million users monthly. Did we just win a prize ? But seriously, i need my missing emails.
@Lam.Tran55
Access to Gmail and GoogleTalk has been restored, but encountering the same problem as you. Hopefully Google will restore all delivered mail during the server outage for those that are affected.
Woohoo, my email's BACK! (But yes, I'm also missing everything that would have been sent over the last 2 days.)
my access back now =] ..uff
My gmail is working again, but no emails from yesterday and today. Something is VERY wrong!
Same situation here; can finally log in, but MISSING EMAILS from the last TWO DAYS. Google - HELP.
Thanks for the repair... I'm back...
If the messages were requeued by their sending server you will get them eventually if not they would have been returned to sender as unable to deliver.
I am unable to login on my account still.
may i dare to say that there might be actually some positive change! my email is back, i hope it is resolved for everyone else soon.
I got my access back and I've got no email. . . all that frustration for nothing
It is working for me but I have no mails from the last 2 days!
@KingTechSolutions Where I use to work, we had an off site server that would house the incoming emails and store them in the event that the main mail server would go down. The offsite server would relay the mail to the main server once it's restored. This is Google, of the biggest companies in the world. I'm hoping they could have afford the same solution and not let our emails bounce around like pinballs.
My queued messages are gradually filtering in now that my account is back online, so I'd expect that everyone else's will be behaving similarly, with a few stragglers arriving throughout the evening.
kurt.williams,
Acting like you do will not get anything solved either.
@Gravi_t: Your snide comment doesn't help either. I'm sure Google knows how to handle people who are frustrated, it's part of customer support. All you're doing is aggravating issues that need not be. I'm getting emails coming back in now that were delivered prior to today. Just taking awhile. Thanks Google for fixing it before Monday, do appreciate the Sunday afternoon effort.
I still am unable to sign into my Gmail account because it's basically saying that my username doesn't exsist.
Because of this, I haven't been able to log onto facebook, myspace, etc.
Can someone please help me?!
@xxchem: Try clearing your cache in your browser first.. Then close it.. Then open a command prompt.. type "cmd" hit enter. then type "ipconfig /flushdns" hit enter now close the command prompt, and open your browser. (don't type the " 's )
I have absolutely no idea what that means... I'm not to great with computers.
Ken Maglio,
Your snide comment doesn't help either. I'm sure Google knows how to handle people who are frustrated, it's part of customer support. I'm also sure you have read the info on the "Post a question" page that says this is a users' forum where people -- Gmail users who give their time as volunteers, despite attacks by some frustrated individuals -- help or try to help other users.
All you're doing is aggravating issues that need not be, so I say it's good to hear your email access is restored and have a nice day, and let it be.
@xxchemical: try this site http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahic. html
This is what I'd call trying to help people.
Thanks for finally repairing the issue. This outage has prompted me to seek alternative email providers... I just signed up for a free trial with Mobile Me, since I mainly use my iPhone and my Macbook at home. I think some of us had a rude awakening with this 2 day service outage. Free email providers may not be worth the risk for work related and time sensitive communication.
I got my gmail back.... but I agree with Mareelyn.
2 days out of 5 years I can live with. Especially when the service is far better than most pay services.
I agree very much with KingTechSolutions. 2 days out of five years is - or ought to be - tolerable. Particularly in view of the fact that Google haven't lost stored emails and even seem to have 'retrieved' messages which were sent during the couple of days my main email address was down. On their apps pages they even thank people for their patience - which is a generous interpretation of the comments which appear on this page. And KTS is right. It is a far better service than most of the ones you pay for . . .
Mareelyn, don't forget, when mobile.me struggled a lot ... probably last year... Technical issues can happen at each email provider... At least we learned that weekend is for fun, not for work... :)
I am writing from Jakarta, Indonesia - gmail has been inaccessible all today (Monday) and is still not loading whatsoever. Not having email is really not fun, and I'm really hoping this is resolved soon.
Even though http://www.google.com/ appsstatus#rm=1&di=1&ddo=1&hl=en says the issue is resolved, I am still unable to access email via IMAP. (Blackberry and web do work though.)
I am still having issues...not with my regular gmail account, but with my business account. I have only been able to get to my login screen twice in the last 12 hours. It will just get stuck...connecting, waiting, connecting, waiting. Quick flashes and constant loading, but nothing ever loads. Sometimes it will just time out and say the server was reset. I am EXTREMELY frustrated. I just set up my business accounts 2 days ago and I'm not sure if I trust this service.
As an additional note...I have asked a couple of friends in different parts of the country to try to access my login page. They are able to, I am not. I have tried completely clearing the cache, history, all cookies. I've tried different browsers. There is something going on that needs to be fixed. If I ever do get into my email account, I'm afraid to log out because I can't get the login page to load again.
Ditto. "Timed out" problem here as well.
Timed out here today, too!
I tend not to believe what Daiva has posted on the dashboard. .001 percent is 10 people out of a million which is too small a number to have both my wife and I have the same problem on 2 different computers with 2 different accounts. I tend to believe it would be more like 25 to 50 percent. I would bet that Google was doing maintence on different servers and took each one down for a period of time which is why it was and still is effecting different people at different times. Why don't they tell us what the problem really was... even if it is the specifics of the problem goes over our our heads.
These links are the only way I know of to contact Google since there is no support. I bet if CNN or Cnet got this story they would take action.
although i can access my account on my desktop, my emails are not coming up on my Blackberry now. Any reason ? Anything I can do to reset the BB email ??
Can't access my apps mail Invalid URL
The requested URL "/a/i156.com", is invalid.

I opened CMD and ran ipconfig /flushdns then it started working
I don't expect any internet service to have perfect uptime stats, but I do expect a slightly faster response when things go wrong. It took 2 days for anyone to even acknowledge the issue here. Paying for a service usually comes with dedicated support staff and multiple ways for users to get in touch with customer service.
Can't get to https://mail.google.com/ support/bin/answer.py?answer=8767 the troubleshooting page for Gmail. Of course, I can't get to Gmail, which is why I tried that.
Can't get to any of these:
---- If you get stuck on 'Loading...,' we suggest first trying our troubleshooting steps. You should be able to use the 'older version' of Gmail or the basic HTML view while we work to resolve the issue.
---- That's from here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs
I can get my email from Gmail through Windows Live Mail, but not through the web browser.
hi. I log into gmail and found out that e-mails from the last four months were erased (they are not on the list). Is this a temporary problem? what should I do?

I can receive mail in Outlook but I am unable to send it. This has been going on for quite some time now. Nothing has been changed in my account configuration. Any suggestions please?
I have been inundated with spam messages in the last few hours - they are all dated 16th 17th 18th August 2008. They are appearing in the inbox under those dates and in the last couple of hours I have had over 200 of them. It's as if the spam filter has been compromised.... Something must be wrong with Gmail and its a real pain for me having to deal with them
