While it makes sense that this lab experiment has ended due to the nature of the new label system, it would be nice if we users had the option to decide for ourselves if we want labels integrated with our Inbox and Trash links, or if we want to keep them separate and on the right hand side.  As it stands now, this new label system is broken in my gmail anyway, so I'm getting the worst of both worlds.  But I'm sure someone's on that by now.  I really just want choice here, guys.

Oh also, Chat is now the only window/widget/whatever available on the right-hand side.  Do you good folks at Gmail think we might see some of the other features being allowed to move over to the right?  I'm talking about Calendar, Tasks, Google Docs, etc.

Well, Arthuian, you are right about one thing.  I've ranted before about Goog not giving us a choice when they roll out options, so I guess I ought to toe the line and do the same here.  I'm sure there's some valid reason it's all or nothing in Goog's world, but I could wish differently.

Question - I didnt like labels above chat because it pretty much hid my chat list. now i moved chat list above labels but i cannot see the labels!!! RIGHT SIDE IS GREAT!!! that way i can see what i have and ignore otherwise. seriously - unless i used a message preview i do not need all that space in the center for the messages!

Also I don't see the new system, and don't even want it, because my right side is empty now, and I always heated the idea of labels over or under the chat...also tryed putting chat on the right side and it didn't work for me...I am please asking to bring the right side labels back, and why don't you leave this option for users to decide if they want to use the new or the old system!!!!!
this is really bugging me now... :((((((((

I agree, right side labels were great !

Having everything on the left side and having to scroll while there is plenty of space horizontally (especially now when almost all screens are "wide" ones) is just pain in the ass...
I don't really need the chat list on the right as there is not so much people in it while I have lots of labels.

The new system is not satisfying and I think this change generates a loss of the usability of labels...
Please bring the right side labels back and at least a "labs" that replace the "new" labels feature.

Thanks for listening.

I would really love to see the discontinued feature (Right-Side Labels) back, or, even better, to be able to choose between where I want to have my labels. The recent Gmail Blog post reads "we realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels", and I guess Google have this kind of statistics. However, personally I used BOTH Right-Side Labels and Right-Side Chat.
On the left I have (err, had?) the standard navbar and Google Docs, Google Calendar and Tasks labs gadgets.

Please consider the minority and bring the Right-Side Labels back. It really tied my email screen together, man.

I absolutely want the return of the Right-Side labels.

This was perfect.

I had it active thru today.  I went to show someone some features of good things about Gmail.  Then when I went to reset my default settings - Right-Side Labels Option was GONE.  No Notice - No Warning - Nothing.

If you remove a feature from The Labs - the least you could do is to disable it in the account usage and Let people know that this feature is no longer available.  This is a primary reason why people Hate Microsoft (yes I said Hate) - because all they do is see the world according to Microsoft and MS rarely listens to it's user-base.  I like and embrace many of your changes and features.  Not too fond of using keyboard commands in a web-page as it tends to interfere with global system settings and don't really care about Snake Games.  But somehow Old Snakey was so important a feature to be kept (which I've never tried/ used or messed with) as it is so useful compared to Right-Side Labels (or right-side anything).  Because Right-side Labels are so bothersome and impractical.

Bring Back Right-side Labels and don't piss off your user-base.  Give us the option.

Did all you guys have a look in Labs to see that you can now have Chats over in the left hand column. I've moved all my Labels into Other Labels and now have a totally uncluttered left hand column and when I drag a piece of mail into the Other Labels folder it opens up for me to drop it into the correct place. Works for me and with the Chats on the right hand side I can see when anybody comes on line.

It doesn't work here. The labels are on the left and I can drag and drop the position on the left, but there's no drag and drop of messages to labels, as suggested in the blog.

I too would like to be able to put the labels on the righthand side of the screen.

I have more than 30 labels and I use at least 12 of them every single day.
In the left side there is no space for these 12 labels in my 1280x800 screen. 8 at most.
But with these 8 labels I have no access to chat.

Right side labels was the only way to have easy access to all these labels.

I know it is possible to have right side chat, but this is not interesting because normally I have more labels than friends online.

These changes can be really nice for most of Gmail users, but for heavy label users it is not so interesting.
Please, re-enable the right side labels.

Best regards

Seriously... I'm not adverse to change. I tend to really appreciate GMail's commitment to improving user experience.

I understand the old left-side label system (hidden under chat et al) was poorly understood and hard to use- I was there when that was the only option and it was painful. I couldn't send messages directly to a label (skip the inbox) because I'd never see them. The Left side was cluttered and drawn out and caused endless scrolling.

Then a miracle happened- Right Side Labels were introduced! All that underutilized real estate on the right of my screen had a purpose! A list of easy to see, no-need-to-scroll labels! And it was good. Navigation was awesome. Labels right next to my <Newer ... Older> arrows and the reply button- fantastic. Sure my Task List would get in the way sometimes, but that disappears easy enough. But the labels- all 40+ of them- in all their glory- were always visible and available right there to the right, not yielding screen space to other gadgets.

Bring back the option. Right side labels for the win.

And forget right side chat- I hide that list of obnoxious coworkers at the bottom the screen.

@Manny.B -

So not the point.  Chat on the Right has been available for a while.  And I think that if anyone is in this thread complaining about the fact that the Labels were able to be placed on the Right-side and now no longer have that option that we were aware of that.  Seeing as how both Labs options were listed together in the middle of many other "features".  Great for you that left-side Labels and right-side Chat works to your benefit - but not everyone on the planet (or at least within Gmail's User-base) is like you.

All we're asking for is the choice as myself and several other folks have mentioned.  Did you skip that part?

I've also found 3 additioanl threads on this single Topic asking for the return of the Option.  Think before you comment.

Using filters, new emails automatically skip my inbox, get labeled immediately and with rightside labels I had enough space to see new emails for my 35 labels on the first sight.
Now that right side labels is removed, I always need to click on "11 more" to see: is there any new email which has skiped the inbox? That's not user friendly!

Please, re-enable the right side labels.

fferitt25 - Thought - gave my point of view - you don't agree which is your choice and your point of view - I didn't complain about what you thought - why do you want to complain about mine - are you that biased?

Vatark - Place your cursor in the little dotted block on the far left of the email to be able to drag it.

Hi everyone!

It really bothered me at first (5 minutes) and then I thought, "You loose some and you win some."
We can't please everyone and moving on to better methods forces change within ourselves.

So, after much ado, I'm for this new way. Even if I am anal-retentive (OCD) when it comes to organization and filters by the Labels.

msommerlandt,

No need to click on the 11 more as when you drag an email over to Other Labels it opens up on it's own and you drag straight into the label you want.

I now have to close my labels box if I want to see my Google Calendar and Remember the Milk gadgets without scrolling down. Okay, so once I eventually see the new features the box will be shorter with just my most frequently used labels, but I don't see why the new stuff couldn't have been done with the labels on the right for those who prefer them that way. I'd personally like to have the ability to decide the order of all the gadgets and to hide ones I don't want to see. I don't use Chat, it just gets in the way. I don't need the Invite a Friend thingy showing all the time.

"New features" or not.

Still not seeing how the "new features" are so advantageous that the ability to decide what side of the screen a Section of Navigation resides on is relevent?

Why can we not have both? Or one or the other?

Why does my Email List need to be 24 inches wide when most of the Subject matter for the Emails ends after few words?

I literally have 10 inches of empty space between the end of the Subject Line of my Emails (on the far left) and the Date Column (on the far right.)

Please bring back the Right-side Labels Feature.  It was one of the more appealing ideas to come thru Gmail.

You're just bragging about the size of your screen. If it's that big you can turn it to portrait view and have a longer list.

Please bring back right-side label options.

If this is not possible, then please enable all other modules to be Right-side possible.

I have so many labels that I now cannot see my Google Calendar, or Google Docs without serious scrolling.

And drag and drop won't work for me if my label is below the bottom of the window.

D'oh! I am a right side label-user, too. Stuffed my left side with calendar, docs, web search, chat and quick links. Now only the chat can be moved to the right. That's ridiculous! Right side labels were FANTASTIC! And i don't want seldom used labels out of my way. If they were there I tend to look at them from time to time. If I didn't i might miss something.... *sigh*

FOLKS. THIS IS A GLARING EXAMPLE OF A MAJOR WEAKNESS INSIDE OF GOOGLE. THEY HAVE NO ABILITY TO PROPERLY LAUNCH A PRODUCT. IT SHOULD BE OF NO SURPRISE TO ANYONE THAT THEY SCREW UP SUCH A MAJOR FEATURE ROLL OUT.

ZERO MARKETING MAY HAVE WORKED FOR SEARCH BUT DOES NOT WORK FOR THE NUMEROUS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THEY HAVE DEVELOP OVER RECENT YEARS. THEY'D BE MUCH FURTHER ALONG TO GROWING AND DIVERSIFYING THIER BUSINESS IF THEY ACTUALLY BEGAN BRANDING AND MARKETING THESE PRODUCTS. IT'S TERRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICE WHEN YOU HAVE TO BE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OR A TECHNOLOGY GEEK TO KNOW ABOUT GOOGLE APPS.

I do not think the new 'lables upgrade' fixes the problem.  I am not sure why Google is so continually opposed to concept of a 'folder'.  A folder by concept, is a logical way for the human brain to deal with organizing something.  Anyone read "Getting Things Done"?  You hear the word 'folder' there all the time.

Nested folders fit in well with this, allowing management of information in a method that allows you to find something even if you don't know what you're looking for.  To gain the functionality of folders, I use the greasemonkey script called Folders4Gmail, part of the Better Gmail 2 Firefox addon.  Here is a perfect example of 'folders' keeping things organized.  I have a lable called "Receipts/2009/Personal" which with Folders4Gmail gives me a folder called Receipts, with a subfolder called 2009 (an in fact I have many other years in there), and another subfolder called Personal.  I dump all of my receipts into this lable and they are organized in.

Gmail touts search as eliminating the need for a folder hierarchy.  Let's say now, I purchased something back in 2007, but I don't remember the retailer or anything else that gives me any search hits?  My brain can remember it was a couple of years ago, so I can crawl down into my 2007 folder and scan until I find it.

Google's engineers may say that their methodology is better, however, I have a personal organization system that works for me, and allows me to function productively.  For now, their 'mandatory upgrade' has broken Folders4Gmail, so instead of technology working for me, I must change my personal methodologies to work for Google's technology.

From the Google blog post, it is aparent that users have difficulty with the concept of lables, so Google added a shortcut to 'lable and archive' under the phraseology of 'Move To' -- and as indicated by their blog post, people started using it!  Could it be that this word 'move' evoked people's personal familiarity with the 'folder' concept?  I would propose that Gmail engineers work on an enhancement that lets customers work with whatever system makes them most productive, be it a traditional folder concept, or a Google lable concept.

I'm another heavy label user - 50+  and this change has drastically reduced my efficiency and organization. Drag and drop labeling should not force a positioning of the label island - this decision simply makes no sense at all.

I import all my other emails(Yahoo, hotmail, aol) to gmail, i also get news feeds in gmail and to manage all these i use labels(71 of those), now left side labels means lot of scrolling, up and down which is most irritating part. And how come chat got to go on right side?

I LOVE right side labels.  I had it all laid out - left hand side calendar, then mail, then labels.  Now I have to scroll down each time I want to click on a label group 'cos it's under all the mailbox sections.   It's a complete and utter pain.  Why do this to me Google?!

Is it possible to introduce some 'page tailoring' functionality to the various components of gmail (not a webtechy so not sure of the terminology)?  For example, on my igoogle page I can set 1, 2 or 3 column, add tabs, drag items around to the right location, add or remove the bits I want...  I know it isn't quite the same, but applying the same principles employed with igoogle to gmail isn't too much for the googly techies is it?

Please bring back right side labels!
