Platforms Engineering Intern (Software, Hardware, and Mechanical) - Mountain View

The Platforms team designs and builds the software, hardware, computing platform and networking technologies that power all of Google's services.

The role: Engineering Intern (Software, Hardware and Mechanical)

Software Engineers

Platforms Software Engineers work on all aspects of Google's system software efforts including firmware, kernel, operating system and tools. You'll be responsible for the platform design, stability and performance in one of the following groups, depending on your experience and interest: 1) Embedded Software, 2) System Software, Firmware and Kernel Development, 3) Performance/Power Monitoring and Tuning, or 4) Networking. Your work may also include projects involving next-generation networking systems and architecture, distributed systems and routing. You'll work in small teams under a technical lead who reports to an Engineering Director. With a degree in computer science at the BS, MS or PhD level, you bring proficiency in C and Linux and enjoy working with low-level software.

Hardware Engineers

Platforms Hardware Engineers perform a range of roles in the design and building of the hardware that forms Google's backbone. Depending on your assignment(s), you'll design and build the hardware products that meet our unique networking needs, or you'll work on server architecture, design and implementation, or performance and power consumption optimization. As a Hardware Test Engineer or Hardware Design Engineer, you'll work in small teams under a Technical Lead and report to an Engineering Director. You hold an electrical engineering or computer science degree at the BS, MS or PhD level and are proficient in areas such as board design, power monitoring and tuning and hardware test.

Mechanical Engineers:

Mechanical engineers are responsible for packaging and delivering our infrastructure from the chip to the data center level in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the BS, MS, or PhD level, you should have experience/course work in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and structural design.

Responsibilities:

• For Software Engineers, one or more of the following:
  • Make things run faster at both hardware and software levels.
  • Design, build, test and optimize custom computing platforms.
  • Design and build next-generation networking systems and architecture, distributed systems and routing.
  • Work with embedded systems design architecture and improve performance at the processor level.
• For Hardware Engineers, one or more of the following:
  • Design and execute tests including stress, voltage, temperature, shake and electromagnetic compatibility tests for all Google Platforms hardware
  • Build prototypes, evaluate performance, perform failure analysis and troubleshoot systems
  • Create and optimize systems architecture and printed circuit board designs for servers and interconnects
• For Mechanical Engineers, one or more of the following:
  • Thermal/Structural analysis of heat sinks, boards, systems, and data centers
  • Build prototype systems and validate performance
  • Develop test procedures and processes to enable optimization of next generation infrastructure.

Requirements:

• Currently pursuing a BS, MS or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering or civil engineering.
• Excellent problem solving abilities.
• Software Engineers:
  • Strong algorithm and coding skills, good abilities with Linux.
  • At least one of the following: C, C++, TCP/IP, x86 architecture or embedded software.
• Hardware Engineers:
  • Some experience with hardware or networking architecture
  • At least one of the following: hardware evaluation methodologies, signal integrity, high-speed board design or x86 processor experience
  • Scripting skills are a plus (C++ or Python preferred)
• Mechanical Engineers:
  • Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience in electronics packaging including:
    • 3D mechanical design experience (ProE).
    • Thermal and structural analysis and design (Flotherm/Mechanica).
    • Testing/verification including temperature, pressure, flow rate, and velocity.
