New! Track Santa on your mobile phone
Install Google Maps on a supported phone and search for 'Santa' on Dec. 24 to see his latest location.

Starting and Searching: Layers

Print

Layers allow you to view locations and additional info overlaid on the map. You can add multiple layers or remove only certain layers so you control exactly what information you want visible on the map at the same time.

Searching and additional features
Search for an address, location, category, or business to create a layer for your search results. Use the main menu, layers menu, or shortcut keys to add layers for familiar features such as Directions, Traffic, or Google Latitude.

Layers menu
Select the Layers option from main menu or use the 2 key shortcut on phones with numeric keypads to open the Layers menu. From this menu you can:

  • Browse more layers to add to the map such as My Maps, Transit Lines, or Wikipedia.
  • See layers that are currently on the map and turn on/off individual layers.
  • Clear all layers from the map.
  • See recently viewed layers that have been turned off. If you turn a recently viewed layer back on, the layer will remain on the map until you specifically turn it off or clear the map.

Some layers provide additional interactive info on the map as well. If you see an icon on the map, just select it to see if more info is available. For example, the Transit layer allows you to select Transit stations to see additional location service info, such as departure times.

Note: Some layers require that you sign in to your Google Account to access your saved info. Google Apps accounts are not the same as Google Accounts and aren't fully supported by all features of Google Maps for mobile. Learn more.
