the rundown

Here At Home is about a vast, ongoing housing experiment to end homelessness for people with mental illness. It’s happening in five cities across Canada, and it includes more than 2,000 participants. We want to give a sense of the experiment in action and of its immense scale. Our mission is to document it and, in doing so, to effect social change. This means we have to tell many stories in many locations over the course of many months – what better medium for such an endeavour than the Web?

The Building Blocks

Our challenge has been to create a structure that’s fluid enough to communicate the unfolding complexity of these stories. As a browser-based webdoc, Here At Home operates as a window on the experiment. It affords the viewer private, intimate, non-linear interaction. The site is constructed in both Flash and HTML5, and we use Google Analytics to monitor traffic. The inspiration for the navigation structure is an image of neurons interacting in the brain. Each of the five cities involved in the study is imagined to be a neuron, communicating with the others via multiple synaptic paths.

The Results

We’ve been inspired by the importance of the experiment. Potentially, this housing project could have an enormous impact both nationally and internationally. Other countries, such as France and Australia, are keeping a close eye on the experiment as they look for ways to end chronic homelessness. Here in Canada, many lives have already been changed by it.
