Summer Under the Stars

the rundown

Summer Under the Stars is a unique event for TCM that not only celebrates the greatest films of all time, but focuses on the actors and their complete filmographies. James Cagney, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne – they're all in here. We had a ton of additional content – photos, actor timelines, videos and film posters at our fingertips. Our challenge was to create a beautiful site design that didn't overpower the content, but brought it to the forefront and presented it in the best way possible. This was also the first experiential site created in HTML as opposed to Flash.

The Building Blocks

By building a site in HTML that would've typically been created in Flash the site was able to be viewed on tablets in addition to desktop computers. The site features parallax scrolling with a custom scrollbar that was developed to allow parallax to work on tablets. We created a simplified mobile version that focused on the schedule.

Designing the site with a variety of devices in mind, and anticipating what type of information users would expect to get on each device led us to develop a site that was very different from versions in years past

The Results

This is the 4th time we've created the site for Summer Under the Stars, and all of the previous versions of the site were built in Flash. TCM is one of our last clients to move away from relying on the plug-in to create the types of experiential sites that their fans have come to expect. By focusing on the content and delivering full-screen imagery and video, along with unique design that complemented the assets we were still able to create a rich site that still felt like the Flash sites of year's past.
