HOORAY! We have now reached the end of season 1. After this, I’ll have finished reviewing one full season of the series. I will also be releasing a post regarding my thoughts on season 1 in general so stay tuned for that. And what a better way to end season 1 than a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode (those are some of my favorite episodes of the series).
Recap and Gifs
The episode starts off with SpongeBob watching the latest episode of the series he helped revive, The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. However since MM and BB are now over 65 years old, they just end up coming off as a lame reboot with cardboard villains cutouts and faulty rings. Despite this, SpongeBob still somehow sees this as a great show. I guess this may be because he’s too happy at the prospect of MM and BB un-retired to even care about the TV series quality.
That’s how they make all reboots, by thinking that fans will like them no matter how terrible they are.
Johnny Elaine (the talking realistic fishead that appears in the intro) announces winner of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy contest (a competition that shows who loves MM and BB the most) to be SpringBoob SquirePin with his MM and BB krabby patty statues much to SpongeBob’s frustration since he had the same krabby patty statues too.
However it turns out that Johnny Elaine misread the name and the real winner of the contest is actually SpongeBob SquarePants!!!
SpongeBob:
SpongeBob proceeds to cheer over how he won a MM and BB contest. Morty the mail fish delivers the prize to SpongeBob who proceeds to cry tears of joy from this. Aww.
It turns out that the prize is Magic Conch Shell (not the plastic talking one from Club SpongeBob) used for contacting MM and BB. He decides to see of it can really contact MM and BB by blowing it.
Sure enough, MM and BB actually do come and BB is annoyed at seeing SpongeBob AnnoyingPants again. It turns out that MM and BB were unaware of the conch signal contest (probably because they wouldn’t have approved of the idea from the executives since there are many people as dumb as SpongeBob that could make up false emergencies).
They tell SpongeBob that the conch signal is for emergencies only and that there has to be trouble or else.
Later while MM and BB are in the line for the showers, SpongeBob blows the conch signal.
However, it turns out that the so called emergency was to help SpongeBob open a mayonnaise jar for Patrick to play. Well considering how much of a weakling he is, that ain’t OOC of him.
BB rightfully yells at SpongeBob for making him and MM come outside semi naked (since they were in line for a shower) for a menial task.
MM manages to talk BB out of his anger by pointing out that they haven’t been called for help in years so doing menial tasks wouldn’t exactly waste their time. BB decides that SpongeBob can call them only if he has something to do for them.
SpongeBob soon enough proceeds to abuse this loophole (must’ve got this from Patrick from the previous episode) to make MM and BB come over and do menial tasks such as doing his chores, getting books off a bookshelf and reading him bedtime stories.
Eventually, BB finally snaps and yells at SpongeBob for making them do those menial tasks. SpongeBob apologizes to MM and BB and confesses that he just wanted to spend time with his two favorite heroes.
I actually sympathize with both of them. SpongeBob because he was just getting them to do menial tasks so that he could spend time with them rather than being lazy and Barnacle Boy since he’s pretty spending 100% of his time being SpongeBob’s servant.
MM manages to make a compromise between SpongeBob and MM/BB by confiscating the conch shell but letting him spend time with time crime patrolling.
However since he’s and idiot, SpongeBob ends up causing chaos for MM and BB.
First he ends up accidentally pressing the origami button of the invisible boat mobile (probably to keep trespassers off the boat mobile) which results in the boat folding both itself and SpongeBob, MM, and BB into an oragami.
Next, he ends up making MM and BB fall off a building by surprising them with donuts.
Finally, he ends up getting into trouble with the retired Atomic Flounder and who ends up charring BB (big nosed people are such butt monkeys) in response.
At the Diner, SpongeBob is happy over all his so called bonding moments with MM and BB. They decide to get him off their backs by making him look for their theme song in the jukebox.
After stating how nice SpongeBob is, they decide to ditch him since they keep getting hurt when around him. Can’t blame them even though this does seem really mean.
Karma strikes back in the form of the Dirty Bubble who immediately eats them just for the heck of it.
SpongeBob comes back after finding the theme song on the jukebox to see them trapped in the Dirty Bubble. Instead of being worried, he immediately tries to get the Dirty Bubble’s autograph since he’s the greatest MM and BB villain with his expandable stomach.
The sharp point of his pencil manages to pop him and save MM and BB.
MM and BB congratulate SpongeBob for saving them in his own idiotic way and they decide to go on one last invisible boat ride with the brave sponge.
Review
This was an amazing episode both as a season one finale and a Mermaid Mad and Barnacle Boy episode. It was really funny and sweet.
Grade: A+
