It's the little Things

Sometimes, small moments in the great outdoors lead to memories and traditions that last a lifetime

Lused to say in the old Saturday Night Live skit, “It just goes to show you, it’s always something.”

I grew up in the great outdoors and our family took advantage of every experience possible to shape our outdoor heritage through camping, fishing, hunting, picnics and more. Along the way through our multiple travels, small memorable moments come to mind that would serve as trigger mechanisms for a much bigger picture. It was always something.

One of the first fish I ever caught was a feisty bullhead on Lewey Lake while camping in the Adirondacks. Using a fiberglass rod and push button reel, the fish put up a great fight as I battled it from a small 12-foot aluminum Sea King boat that was owned

by my grandfather, Irvin Hilts. I still own that same boat today, memories of years gone by … and reflection of that moment in time. It ignited a fire within that allows me to fish (and camp) from one end of the state to the other and many points in between. It created a desire that eventually led to a job from which I am now retired involving fishing and the outdoors. It doesn’t get any better than that.

I have been fortunate enough to camp all over New York State – from the Thousand Islands to the Lake Ontario plains in Western New York; from the Finger Lakes to the Lake Erie shoreline; from the Catskills to the Adirondacks. Every one of those singular trips has become a collective memory that has built a solid foundation in the outdoors. They are each comprised of special moments, and many have been passed on to family and friends through the years. They are my “Big Picture.”

Climbing Chimney Mountain overlooking Indian Lake as a youngster with my parents and cousins was both exciting and breathtaking. It led to other climbing adventures along the way. Now, it’s my offspring Nat who is doing the climbing in the Adirondacks with a group of friends who share their outdoor passion for nature in all its glory— from campfires to cooking, from hiking to tent camping. A connection with nature is just as important today as it was 50 years ago, if not more so.

Just like the New York State Lottery, you must be in it to win it. The same could be said about camping and the outdoors. You must be in it to take advantage of all Mother Nature has to offer. Not every experience can be sunny and blue skies weatherwise. Following the motto of the Boy Scouts, you need to be prepared. One adventure that comes to mind was an annual camping trip to Triple R in Franklinville over Labor Day weekend. We generally had five or six families from church that joined us in the fun, from pop-up campers to comfortable trailers to rentals on-site. This holiday weekend in 2006 was terrible when it came to weather conditions. The remnants of Hurricane Ernesto came motoring into New York, bringing with it plenty of rain. In fact, it rained for our four days of camping. No, it didn’t rain – it poured! However, we were prepared for it. We combined our pop-up tarps to create a common area for dinners and games. We worked together to make sure everyone was warm, dry, and safe. The kids loved playing in the rain. Some of the adults did, too. We shared our food and drinks, making it one of the most memorable camping adventures that we have ever had. Many of the kids, now young adults, still talk about that soaking weekend and how much fun we had.

I have had some exciting camping adventures around the continent, too. At the top of the list are three memorable tent-pitches into the wilderness. The first was camping under the stairs in the Rocky Mountains outside of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. We rode horses into the mountains and roughed it for a night as guests of the 7W Dude Ranch. I have never seen so many stars. Breakfast in the morning over the campfire was one of the best I have ever had. Small moments that were huge!

The second memorable trip was a week-long canoeing adventure in the boundary waters above Minnesota, a fly-in adventure out of Ely, Minn. with eight friends – camping on an island in the middle of nowhere. I remember sleeping like a rock – on a rock – and exploring the beautiful landscape while catching fish for dinner. We even found ancient pictographs from earlier inhabitants. A third unforgettable backcountry canoeing adventure took me to Algonquin Provincial Park in Northern Ontario. In fact, there were two of them with two entirely different sets of friends. In all these adventures, it was as wild as they come. I mention them because there are similar experiences available right here in New York, if a wild adventure is what you are craving. The best spot in New York is probably the Adirondacks, but there are other wilderness areas that could serve the purpose for a rustic getaway. The Adirondacks is six million acres of public land, the largest state park in the country. Camp on an island in Indian Lake or take a canoe or kayak paddle through the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Discover what the Empire State has available one step or stroke at a time. Part of the fun is figuring out where you are going to explore … and with who. Yes, it’s the little things – while camping, in life. Enjoy them while you can.

attend a lecture or weekly popular culture performance. In addition to recreation, Chautauqua-Lake Erie is an agricultural region with plenty of local flavors. Taste local wines from over 20 wineries located along Lake Erie collectively known as Lake Erie Wine Country. Visit the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield for grape inspired gifts, wine tasting bar and exhibits that tell the story of 150 years of grape growing in the region. Plan a craft brewery and distillery tour along the unofficial “brews and spirits trail”. Visit the original Southern Tier Brewing Company, one of the largest craft-brewers in the United States. Enjoy an Ellicottville Brewing Company signature beer at either of their two locations, one located in Bemus Point on Chautauqua Lake and the other in Fredonia, not far from Lake Erie and local wineries. Purchase local produce and artisanal goods from farm stands and farmers markets throughout the region.

My wife Adrienne and I maintain a journal of our camping trips and hope you do, too. Each year during camping season, and sometimes in the off-season, we look back through our journals and recall many special memories. Here are a few of ours.

Dirty Pasta

My wife’s sister will be the first one to tell you she’s a tad clumsy. Once, while draining pasta outside for a big spaghetti dinner, the strainer slipped out of her hand and the pasta went on the ground. With no alternate plan, and several mouths to feed (and my wife and mother-in-law’s extra special meatballs), our only option was to wash the pasta and serve it; albeit on the crunchy side. Everyone survived, but my sister-in-law has yet to live it down after all these years.

The infamous “pasta mishap!”

Loons

We primarily camp and paddle in the Adirondacks, which means we see and hear a lot of loons. I also try my best to photograph them. Some of my best shots have happened while participating in the annual New York Loon Census, in mid-July. One year I was fortunate to observe and photograph a pair of adult loons with two chicks. They let me get surprisingly close, so I just played it cool and snapped as many photos as I could. Continued on page 56

Family Time

After visiting the trifecta of major sports hall of fames in the United States, it was time for our end of summer trip to the Adirondacks. Sure, Canton, Cooperstown and Springfield are fine to visit but there is something about time in the mountains that allows one to relax before the grind of the school year starts back up. Usually, we try and get in a few hikes while visiting and this year was no different. Up first was Baker Mountain with an elevation of 2,452 feet and several lookouts that supply spectacular views of Saranac Lake, Lake Flower, and the High Peaks to the east. This mountain is a superb hike, right in Saranac Lake. After watching the forecast in the morning, we hustled to get going before the rain started. It was a quick drive to the trail head at the north end of Moody Pond. The route up to the summit is about a mile in length with 884 feet in ascent. Parking at the trailhead was very limited but we were determined

Big, Little Kids

We once had a family reunion of sorts at one of our summer campsites. My brother’s son and his family were visiting from California and my nephew, Grady, was 7 at the time.

Grady’s dad and I were wading in knee-deep water, catching up on things, and boy’s dad was encouraging him to swim out a little deeper. But Grady was apprehensive, even with a life vest on.

Then I told him that all weekend a bunch of kids had been swimming to a boat mooring pilot about 30 feet from us.

“Were any of them seven?” he asked me.

“I think a couple were six,” I told him.

Splash, kick, splash! Off went Grady to the deeper water, as his dad and I watched and chuckled.

Who cooks for you?

Several years ago, while camping in the Adirondacks, we were joined by our friends who had a young daughter named Emily, who was perhaps age 5 or 6 at the time. Sitting around the campfire, we heard a barred owl and its infamous “Who cooks for you” hoot, which I explained to Emily. A few weeks later, while talking with her Dad, he laughed as he mentioned how the family was watching TV one night when an owl came on the screen.

“Who cooks for you,” Emily said!

Apparently, the campfire lesson stuck with the youngster.

to get it in before the rain. Both mountains we had chosen were popular and we ran into quite a few other hikers. Finally, the kids and dog were ready to go, we checked in and started our ascent. Only a few short minutes into the hike, the kids started complaining but we coaxed them to continue.

Shortly after starting, the trail starts to climb and never really lets up, however, halfway through it meanders through several sweeping bends and levels out. It was a tad strenuous after this as there are short ledges and bare rock that must be climbed. After explaining the trail markers to the kids, we let them get ahead of us. They enjoyed exploring the trail as they trekked on. Before the woody summit there is an overlook that includes magnificent views of the village of Saranac Lake, the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area, and the High Peaks.

Four-legged family members love to hike, too!

After spending time at the lookout and getting a family photo to document the journey we went to find the geographical summit marker. Once we reached it, we met another group of hikers. We happened to overhear one of them talking about one of the pine trees near the top that was special to them. The grandkids had spent summers in the area and climbed Baker Mountain every year they visited their grandparents. When their grandfather passed away, they planted a pine tree with his ashes on top of the mountain, showing it to us. Sure, it could have been just another summit checked off the list of ones we have hiked as a family. However, the chat with these other hikers really brought to the forefront the importance of families spending time together outside. As we traversed down the mountain, the rain clouds moved in. Sprinkling at first but as we reached the car the intensity increased. We had completed another peak and, in the process, recalled how important family is.

You know you’ve reached the summit when you see one of these!

playing candy bar bingo, playing a game of dodgeball, watching live entertainment, swimming in the pool and of course sitting by a campfire. All these little moments are making the big adventure for our family and keep us wanting to come back for more.

Last summer we got up early and packed lunches, snorkels, tubes, stand up paddle boards, a kayak, hammocks, fishing gear and camping chairs and headed to the east side of the Lake George. We spent the day floating on the lake in our tubes, SUPing, relaxing in our hammocks and the kids caught dozens of fish. It was a spectacular day on the lake. Then we returned to the campground and watched an exciting Wild West Show followed by a dip in the pool and then a campfire. One thing we love about camping in NY is our campsites. There is nothing better than sitting next to a fire and star gazing. One night I was up photographing star trails and there was a meteor shower. I stayed up for hours watching the meteors shoot across the sky. Another time I saw a scarlet tanager land on a tree branch just above my camp chair. I had been trying to photograph that bird for months with no luck and there it was sitting in a tree watching me knit a sweater. It’s those moments that wow and astonish me and make me so glad we have an RV and can spend so much quality time outdoors. It is nice to break free from the high paced work and family life and just unwind outdoors.

One of our best days camping in New York was when we rented a deck boat along with our friends for a day on Lake George. We spent an amazing day exploring the different island sections. We reserved a beautiful day use site on West Dollar Island. The kids snorkeled, swam and cliff jumped while the adults relaxed on our site and took in the views of the beautiful lake. We continued the day stopping to swim at the different island sections of the lake. Everyone also had

a great time tubing even my husband who had an epic wipe out. It was a fantastic day, and we had a wonderful time sitting around the campfire that night talking about how much fun we had.

While camping can have its amazing moments it can also have its scary and unfortunate moments. I think it is how you handle the bad moments and work through them that leaves the lasting memories. All the little moments keep us wanting to go back for more like finding a good great cliff jumping spot, winning a round of candy bar bingo, seeing a meteor shower, or going for an early morning walk with the dogs and watching the sunrise. Of course, we could do without flat tires, blown fuses, slides not working, the AC deciding to drain into the living room onto the pull-out bed to name a few. In the end all the little moments add up to make the big adventure and, in our case, wonderful family memories.
