First Record of a Native Heteropteran Preying on the Introduced Eucalyptus Pest, Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae), in Brazil2012 •
The bronze bug Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae), originating in Australia, has been rapidly spreading in eucalyptus plantations in the Southern Hemisphere, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. In Brazil, it was detected in 2008 in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. Due to incomplete knowledge about the biology of this pest, the present study evaluated the bioecology of T. peregrinus in different eucalyptus species and hybrids. The genetic materials utilized were: Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. urophylla, E. grandis, ‘1277’ (Hybrid E. grandis x camaldulensis—HGC), ‘VM-1’ (Hybrid E. urophylla x camaldulensis—HUC) and ‘H-13’ (Hybrid E. urophylla x grandis—HUG). The experiment was conducted in a climate-controlled chamber at a temperature of 26±1°C, r.h. 0 70%±10% and 12 h photophase. The biology of different genotypes indicated that the species E. urophylla and E. grandis are the most suitable for the development and reproduction of T. peregrinus, although all treatments enabled the bronze bug to develop and produce descendants. T. peregrinus developed and reproduced in the principal plant materials planted in the southern, central-west and northeastern regions of Brazil, constituting a potentially damaging insect pest to eucalyptus plantations

The bronze bug Thaumastocoris peregrinus: a new insect recorded in Italy, damaging to Eucalyptus treesThe bronze bug Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero et Dellape (Heteroptera Thaumastocoridae) is reported for the first time from Italy infesting Eucalyptus spp. in several urban and rural sites of the Latium region. The host plants are very common in Italy as ornamental and forest trees. This is the first record of a member of the family Thaumastocoridae from Europe and the Mediterranean region. Preliminary observations on general biological aspects and distribution of T. peregrinus have been conducted.

First record from Calabria (southern Italy) of the “bronze bug” Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero and Dellapé, 2006, alien Eucalyptus pest native to Australia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae)2020 •
The occurrence in Calabria (southern Italy) of Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero and Dellapé, 2006, alien pest on various species of Eucalyptus, native to Australia, is reported for the first time. The first specimens were collected in September 2019; later the authors found feeding damage on the leaves, eggs batches and the various stages of the insect in various localities in Reggio Calabria (Italy). Notes on its distribution and biology are reported.

The ongoing dispersion of the Eucalyptus bronze bug (Thaumastocoris peregrinus) in Spain2019 •
Aim of stydy: Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Carpinteiro & Dellapé, 2006) is notable for its dispersion potential, and for its damage to a wide range of hosts of the genus Eucalyptus. The intense movement of people and cargo between continents contributes to the success of its geographical distribution on the globe and hinders the adoption of preventive measures. The celerity and precision in the identification of T. peregrinus, as well as its invasion and dispersion routes are fundamental for the implementation of measures to prevent new invasions.Area of Study: Park of Retiro in the community of Madrid, Spain, where T. peregrinus is present.Material and methods: In this paper we analysed this COI mtDNA gene in T. peregrinus, using samples collected in a park in Madrid urban area, to study the possible ways of introduction of this insect in Spain. This goal can be achieved using molecular methods to amplify and sequence the COI mtDNA gene, which is used as a barcode gene. Results: The r...

The Eucalyptus pest Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero et Dellape, (Hemiptera Thaumastocoridae) was found in a Eucalyptus arboretum in Lisbon, Portugal, in April 2012. This is the first report for this species in Western Europe. Separate surveys were conducted to assess the geographical distribution, host plant susceptibility and natural enemies of T. peregrinus. To ascertain the geographical distribution of T. peregrinus surveys were conducted between May and June 2012 at 53 sites in central and southern Portugal. T. peregrinus was present in only three sites, which were all located in Lisbon and surrounding areas suggesting an introduction pathway through the harbors or the airport in this coastal city. Of the 30 Eucalyptus species present in Lisbon’s Eucalyptus arboretum, 14 were confirmed as infested by T. peregrinus during the first survey in April 2012. In August 2012 the host range had increased to 19 Eucalyptus species, revealing an expansion phase. We report the first rec...
