Inputs and Outputs

Features

5.1-Channel Input: In addition to the built-in Dolby Digital and DTS processing, this unit also has a 5.1-channel input for use with external multi-channel decoders.

Component Video Switching: In addition to composite and S-video switching, this unit can switch between two component video sources. There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video monitor output; each input and output has jacks labeled "Y", "Pb" and "Pr". This feature allows you to connect, and switch between, high resolution video sources equipped with component video outputs.

Standard Modes:

  • Dolby Digital
  • DTS
  • Dolby Pro Logic

Advanced Theater Modes:

  • Musical: Simulates the acoustic environment of a large concert hall and is suitable for Dolby Digital and DTS sources.
  • Drama: Simulates the relaxed environment of a classic medium size movie theater and is suitable for dramas recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
  • Action: Simulates the acoustic environment of a large modern movie theater, allowing you to enjoy the power and dynamics of motion picture audio. This mode is suitable for action movies recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
  • Expanded: This mode is designed to give depth to stereo sources. The overall effect builds a dynamic and broad sound field, allowing a 2-channel signal to imitate a 5-channel signal. You can use this mode with Dolby Pro Logic for a stereo surround effect, or you can use this mode with Dolby Digital sources for a wider stereo field than Standard mode.

DSP Modes: The DSP modes allow you to transform your room into a variety of different sonic environments when playing standard 2-channel sources, Dolby Pro Logic sources, and Dolby Digital sources. You can choose from the following DSP modes:

  • Hall 1: Simulates the acoustic environment of a large, wooden concert hall. Complex delay of reflected sounds, coupled with reverberation effects, create the dynamic sound characteristics of an orchestra performing in a concert hall, making it suitable for classical music.
  • Hall 2: Simulates the acoustic environment of a concert hall with stone walls. The rich reverberations and natural fullness of the sound also make it suitable for classical music.
  • Jazz: Simulates the acoustic environment of a jazz club. Less delay on the reflected sounds emphasizes the sensation of hearing a live band.
  • Dance: Simulates the acoustic environment and strong bass sound of a dance club. A short delay on the reflected sounds emulates the raw power of the dance music.
  • Theater 1: Adjusts the delay of the reflected sound to simulate the acoustic environment of a medium size movie theater.
  • Theater 2: Simulates the acoustic environment of a theater while maintaining proper localization of each channel.

Midnight Listening Mode: The Midnight Listening mode preserves the dynamic range and full intelligibility of a movie sound track, while reducing the volume level. Note: This mode is only available when specially encoded Dolby Digital signals are played.

Setting Modes:

  • Speakers (front, center, surround): This setting establishes the size and configuration of the speaker system you have connected. For the Front speakers, you can choose a setting of Large or Small. For the center speaker, you can choose a setting of Large, Small, or no center speaker (denoted by an asterisk). For the surround speakers, you can choose a setting of Large, Small, or no surround speakers (denoted by an asterisk).
  • Subwoofer: For the subwoofer, you can choose a setting of On, Off, or Plus. When the Plus setting is selected, the subwoofer will receive bass signals, even if the front speakers are set to Large. Note: If the front speakers are set to Small in the Speaker setting mode, the Subwoofer mode will be set to On and cannot be turned Off.
  • Crossover Frequency: Allows you to select a high-pass crossover frequency for speakers set to Small. The frequencies below the crossover frequency are sent to the subwoofer. If a subwoofer is not connected, the frequencies are sent to speakers with a Large setting. You can choose a crossover frequency setting of 100, 150, or 200Hz. Note: If all of the speakers are set to Large, the crossover frequency cannot be set.
  • LFE Attenuator: Sets the attenuation level for the LFE (low frequency effects) channel when the LFE signal causes distortion in the speakers.
  • Low Cut Filter: When the subwoofer sounds distorted, you can turn the low cut filter On.
  • Front Speaker Distance Setting: May be set from 1-30 feet.
  • Center Speaker Distance Setting: May be set from 1-30 feet.
  • Surround Speaker Distance Setting: May be set from 1-30 feet.
  • Dynamic Range Control: Allows you to select a compression setting of Max, Mid, or Off. For listening enjoyment at very low volumes, choose Max for maximum dynamic range compression. Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital sources.
  • Dual Mono: The dual mono setting can only be used when listening to Dolby Digital sources that have dual mono information. With this setting, you can choose which channel in the dual mono information you want to hear. This feature is useful for soundtracks that have one language on one channel and a different language on the other channel.
  • Component Input 1: Sets the component that is assigned to the 1st set of component inputs. You can select DVD, TV, VCR, or Off.
  • Component Input 2: Sets the component that is assigned to the 2nd set of component inputs. You can select DVD, TV, VCR, or Off.
  • Coaxial Digital Input: Sets the component that is assigned to the coaxial digital input. You can select DVD, TV, CD, CD-R, VCR, or Off.
  • Optical Digital Input 1: Sets the component that is assigned to the 1st Toslink digital input. You can select DVD, TV, CD, CD-R, VCR, or Off.
  • Optical Digital Input 2: Sets the component that is assigned to the 2nd Toslink digital input. You can select DVD, TV, CD, CD-R, VCR, or Off.
  • Sound Level (Test Tone): Allows you to set the volume level of each channel (Front Left, Center Speaker, Front Right, Subwoofer, Surround left and Surround Right loudspeaker).

Display Dimmer: The display brightness may be set to one of three levels, or it may be turned off.

Signal Select: If a component is hooked up to the receiver using both digital and analog connections, you can select the input you wish to use.

Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote: The VSX-D710S comes with a powerful remote that will control not only the receiver's functions, but also most popular brands of audio and video equipment, including DVD players, CD players, cassette decks, televisions, cable boxes, VCRs, satellite receivers and other home-theater equipment. Also, this remote can learn the infrared commands from remotes of other devices.
