High Schools: Emery’s two goals lifts Penncrest to first league win

Josh Emery and Jaden Engleman supplied the offense to help Penncrest claim its first boys soccer victory in the Central League with a 3-1 victory over Upper Darby.

Emery tallied twice and Engleman once. Jackson Meile made five saves in goal for the Lions (3-3, 1-2).

Enner Guerra had the lone goal for the Royals while Shane Soley stopped 12 shots in goal.

Radnor 5, Strath Haven 1 >> Danny Rosenblum set the tone for the Raptors with one goal and one assist.

Rosenblum fed Caden Cleffi for Radnor’s first goal and converted a pass from Blake Steel for the Raptors third score. Bryan Chaves scored off an assist from Nate Lucchesi. Jacob Shaley converted a pass from Jacob Shalev and Owen Shiels had an unassisted goal for Radnor.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Kennett 6, Sun Valley 1 >> John Nolek had the long goal for the Vanguards off an assist from Bobbo Chambers.

In the Bicentennial League:

Dock Mennonite 8, Christian Academy 2 >> Noah Gran and Colton Haseltine had the goals for the Crusaders.

In nonleague action:

Shipley 3, Episcopal Academy 0 >> Ethan Hayward scored two goals as the Gators handed the Churchmen (2-1-2) their first loss of the season.

Akira Heath made three saves in goal for EA.

Field Hockey

Sophia Hunter powered the offense with two goals to lead Springfield to its second straight win in the Central League with a a 4-1 triumph over Ridley.

Karlie Henderson and Jacklyn Guille added one goal each, Maddie Kane contributed three assists while Charlize Garrett made five saves in goal for the Cougars.

Mackenzie Fagan converted a pass from Paige McLaughlin to get the Green Raiders on the board. Goalie Elise Martin made nine saves.

In nonleague action:

Notre Dame 4, Villa Maria 0 >> Saylor Milone posted two goals and one assists to help the Irish (2-2-0) get to .500. Aly Maguire and Reese Czajkowski added one goal each.

Hill School 9, Archbishop Carroll 0 >> Arianaa Hall and Kerry Ellison made six saves in goal each for the Patriots.

Opal Sparling and Maggie Kondrath tallied two goals apiece for Hill School.

Girls Volleyball

Shannon McGroarty paced in the attack with 11 kills and Janay Kennon led the defense at the net with seven blocks as Sun Valley downed Kennett, 3-0.

Setters Jenna Jones and Kate McGroarty combined for 24 assists while libero Kyle Shetter was solid in the back line with 13 digs.

Boys Cross County

Dankin Ebmeyer led the way as Episcopal Academy captured to top five places to beat Germantown Academy (15-48), Springside Chestnut Hill (15-50) and Hill School (15-50).

Ebmeyer cover the 5,000-meter course in 17:54, followed by Connor Hanrahan (17:54), Aidan McHugh (18:07), Michael Woolery (18:08) and Dawson French (18:18).

In the Central League:

Central League opener >> Michael Colavito was the overall winner as Garnet Valley swept Springfield (15-50), Strath Haven (27-30) and Upper Darby (17-45) Rose Tree Park.

Colavito won in 17:38.50. David Stango placed sixth and Alexander Gursahaney seventh for the Jaguars. Dan Wuenschel took second and Matt Lund fourth to pace Strath Haven. Ricky Lee and Matt DeAngelo were third and fifth, respectively for Marple Newtown. Ridley’s Joey Lanci, Colin Walls and Jackson Kane rounded out the top 10.

In other team scoring Marple Newtown Springfield (16-46) and Upper Darby (22-34); Ridley defeated Springfield (15-50) and Upper Darby (15-48) tied with Strath Haven (28-28) while the Panthers beat Marple Newtown (22-39).

Girls Cross Country

Hannah Prokup led the way as Strath Haven had two of the top three finishers open the Central League season with wins over Marple Newtown (21-36), Ridley (17-45) and Garnet Valley (23-35).

Prokup won in 20:55, while Chloe Browne took third in 22:09.10. Sophie Jackson was sixth for the Panthers.

Avery Lustigarten placed second and Ashley Burkett sixth to pace Garnet Valley. Springfield’s Sarah Emch (seventh) and Sophia Kurtis (ninth), and Upper Darby’s Amber Fienagha (10th) rounded out the top 10. Sara Kohn finished 11th to lead Marple Newtown.

Marple Newtown defeated Springfield (26-29) and Upper Darby (15-50). Garnet Valley topped Springfield (26-31) and Upper Darby (15-50) and Springfield and Ridley defeated Upper Darby (15-50).

In the Inter-Ac League:

Episcopal 18, SCHA 43 >> Alex Gobran, Joy Ying and Grace Hannigan took the top three places for the Churchwomen. Gobran was first in 22:48. London Pettibone and Ellie Moran placed fourth and fifth, respectively, for EA.

Hasan leads Agnes Irwin >> Orchie Hasan placed third overall as Agnes Irwin fell to Penn Charter (19-42), Germantown Academy (20-39) and Baldwin School (28-30). Ella Brown finished 12 for the Owls.

Girls Tennis

Maggie Dugery and Izzy Rozes and Maggie Lo and Elizabeth Boruff lost just one game at first and third doubles, respectively, as Episcopal Academy kicked off the Inter-Ac season with a 6-1 victory over Germantown Academy.

Kamora Helton, Avery Morris and Carter Yearley swept the singles in straight sets.

In the Catholic League:

Cardinal O’Hara 5, Bonner & Prendergast 0 >>  Samma Zahran, Jordan Graney and Sophia Bora swept the singles without losing a game. Theresa Stolarczyk and Sophie Carey did the same at first doubles.

In the Del Val League:

Chichester 5, Penn Wood 0 >> Rachel Bube and Vivien Wang led the way for the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second doubles. Juliet Schilling and Kaitlyn Carpenter (first doubles), Cortney Carberry (first singles) and Maggie Malloy (second singles) were the other winners for Chi.

In the Central League:

Lower Merion 7, Ridley 0 >> Christuina Bui put up a fight at third singles for the Green Raiders before falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Lower Merion’s Ana Byler and Nina Bowser held off Ridley’s Gabby DeLuca and Mia Matteo at fourth doubles, 6-2, 7-5.

Garnet Valley 7, Upper Darby 0 >> Grace Son, Anita Fardsanei and Catherine Qian dropped just two games in the singles competition. Fardsanei was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at second singles.

In nonleague action:

Germantown Friends’ 5, Notre Dame 2 >> Ella Abramson pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win at second singles and Margaret Hayden scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory at third singles for the Irish.

Unionville 6, Radnor 1 >> The Longhorns handed the Raptors their first loss of the season. Mia Xie claimed the only win for Radnor (9-1) with a 6-3, 6-2 Triumph at second singles.

Golf

Braden Rogers carded a 2-over par 37 to lead Garnet Valley past Harriton and Lower Merion. The Jaguars scored 197, followed by the Rams (201) and the Aces (214).

Sydney Hermish fired a 38 and Tyler Ryburn 39 for GV. Lower Merion’s Seiji Sako shot 1-over 36 to lead all scorers.

Malvern Prep 189, Cardinal O’Hara 228 >> Davis Conaway had three birdies en route to a 1-over par 36 to pace the Friars. Michael Henry finished with a 2-over par 37.

Joey Wennemer (four pars) shot 41 and Anthony Carson (three pars) 44 for the Lions.

Boys Water Polo

Luka Sekulic collected six goals and three steals but it wasn’t enough as Haverford School dropped a 14-13 decision to Lawrenceville.

Zach Dixon contributed three goals, two steals and one drawn ejection. Lue Puller had four assists, four steals and one drawn ejection
