Two people escaped a fire inside their room at the Jackson Motel on Northwest Broad Street Sunday morning.

One person is in critical condition and another injured after inhaling smoke as a hotel room caught fire Sunday morning.

The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department responded to a report of a fire around 8:45 a.m. at Jackson Motel, located at 831 NW Broad Street.

Crews immediately rescued a man from a second-floor room that was directly above the fire.

A man and woman who were in the burning hotel room were able to get out on their own.

The woman from the room and the man staying above the room that was on fire were both transported by medics to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The man is listed in critical condition, and the woman's condition was not immediately available.

As some firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, others knocked on doors to evacuate 12 adjacent rooms, allowing everyone else to exit the motel safely.

The department's fire marshal division is still investigating the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters at both stations 1 and 4 could see heavy smoke coming from the motel. Upon arriving at the building, they found fire coming from one of the rooms.

“Anytime there is a fire at a multi-dwelling you fear the worst,” said Battalion Chief Blake Insell said in a statement Sunday. “But all crews worked together to rapidly rescue guests, evacuate the motel and extinguish the fire. Their hard work should be commended.”

Murfreesboro Police Department officers also responded to help with traffic, blocking NW Broad Street while firefighters worked.

Electricity to the burning room and the one above have been turned off, but the rest of the motel still has power.
