All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) is a Vehicle in the Star Wars universe. The AT-AT was one of the most heavily armed and armored vehicles in the Imperial Army during the Galactic Civil War.
Description
The All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) or sometimes known as the Imperial Walker was a large quadrupedal walker used by the Imperial Army during the Galactic Civil War.
The "head" of the AT-AT served as the command center for the walker. It held all sensors, weapons and targeting capabilites and could rotate to almost 90 degrees from the main body, allowing an impressive field of fire.
The body of the walker served for transport, allowing up to 40 stormtroopers and 5 speeder bikes to be transported and rapidly deployed via a fast rope system.
Below the main body, four legs supported the walker. Even though these walkers were heavily armored, their legs were unstable and could be tripped. During the Battle of Hoth, the Rebel Alliance used this to their advantage with the help of the snowspeeder's tow cable. The underbelly of the main body also lacked armor, making it vulnerable to mounted guns or missiles fired from close range.
To deploy these massive walkers, large dropships were required to get them to the surface of planets. These dropships become big targets while en route, naturally.
History
The AT-AT was developed for use by the Imperial Army by Kuat Drive Yards. It quickly came to represent the standard for Imperial firepower on the battlefield. It participated in many battles - most notably during the Battle of Hoth, when it was the driving force behind taking out the shield generator exposing the Rebel Base.
