Helena was already about twenty years old when this photo was taken by Watkins during one of his 1880s visits to the Pacific Northwest. Gold was discovered in 1864 in Last Chance Gulch, and the city's winding main street, which follows the gulch, is named after it.
By 1888 Helena boasted about 50 millionaires, made rich from the gold they had found. Over $3.6 billion (in today's dollars) of gold was extracted from Last Chance Gulch in the first twenty years.
