#HeroesEndingPolio

Arturo,
barangay chairperson

When we visited Barangay Mercedes in Zamboanga City during the polio campaign, Chairman Arturo eagerly showed us the resolutions his council passed in support of vaccination. We appreciate local leaders like Arturo – they are our #HeroesEndingPolio in ensuring the health of their community!

“When the nurse here in the center said that we need to have simultaneous polio immunizations, I said that the village council must have a document, a resolution supporting our health office and their needed resources.

We were ready to support the immunization teams -- the barangay police became escorts and assistants; we used the barangay resources. There are parents that we still needed to convince. Advocacy is really needed. Those that have negative perceptions, we help in motivating them to participate.

The entire barangay should adopt a resolution to strengthen the relationship (with the health center). It should be a tandem, a joint force. The barangay council should support the health workers. The barangay is responsible for everything that happens in the community, that is why we should always be behind our health workers, so that they will be relaxed while they are providing their services, so that they will be more confident.”
