Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5 years of experience in hardware testing, validation, or a related engineering role.
- Experience working in an optics laboratory setting, using optical test and measurement equipment (e.g., lasers, cameras, power meters, spectrometers, interferometers).
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant technical field.
- Experience with statistical data analysis, data visualization, and result presentation.
- Experience with image processing libraries and techniques (e.g., OpenCV, scikit-image, MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox).
- Understanding of Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) optical concepts.
- Familiarity with various optical metrology methods and instruments.
- Proficiency in Python for running scripts, test automation, and data analysis.

The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.

- Design, develop, and implement test plans, procedures, and fixtures for characterizing optical components and systems.
- Build, improve, maintain, and operate automated test stations within an optics laboratory environment.
- Validate the performance of optical instruments such as cameras, lenses, colorimeters, etc. Document test setups, procedures, results, and analyses clearly and concisely.
- Collect, process, analyze, and interpret test data to evaluate performance, identify failures, and provide design feedback using JMP, Python, Matlab, image processing, etc.
- Collaborate closely with optical design, hardware, and software engineering teams to define test requirements and ensure comprehensive test coverage.
