Director of Research and Engineering, Health Intelligence

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience leading software teams across multiple geographies with a focus on developing AI and ML-based solutions in health.
  • Experience with leading research and development initiatives.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience including fields like Bio Engineering.
  • Experience developing AI and ML-based solutions for consumer health including contributions to foundation model development, agentic architectures, and health sensing algorithm development.
  • Experience in leading customer health and wellness engineering and Research and Development (R&D) efforts.
  • Experience developing regulated health algorithms.
  • Experience on working with highly cross-functional teams.
  • Understanding of the limitations of sensing and AI capabilities to help inform strategy on how to address those gaps, as well as an understanding how best to translate research into practice.

About the job

As Director of Research and Engineering, you will lead a research and engineering team focused on delivering an AI-based health and wellness experience and health sensing solutions that leverage all of the emerging AI capabilities in the computing community, as well as the best that Gemini base model offers. You will utilize experience in AI, machine learning, and health sensing, and an understanding of the process of scaling and shipping these kinds of AI-centric products.

The role is highly cross-functional and you will work across many organizations including Research, Product, Program, UX, all other parts of Engineering, and legal/regulatory. You will be fully accountable for marshaling resources, managing all aspects of the team’s work in this area, setting and driving the strategic direction, and creating a highly collaborative environment both within and outside of the team.

The Google Home team focuses on hardware, software and services offerings for the home, ranging from thermostats to smart displays. The Home team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Deliver an excellent personal health agent and health sensing algorithms by leveraging emerging AI capabilities and Gemini.
  • Oversee the entire lifecycle of new health features, from initial research and roadmap development to productization, including the early discovery phase and translating those innovations into user-facing products.
  • Work with a wide range of teams, including Research, Product Management, Program Management, UX, Engineering, and Legal/Regulatory, and educate other functions on the possibilities and limitations of new technologies.
  • Lead a team of software engineers and research scientists. Develop strategies to navigate the complex and novel regulatory environment of health technology.
  • Be fully accountable for the strategic direction of the personal health agent and health sensing initiatives, including resource allocation.
