Our cooling towers
Water vapor rises above the cooling towers in The Dalles data center in Oregon. These plumes of water vapor create a quiet mist at dusk.

Welcome
Google is proud to call Oregon home to Google's first owned and operated data center.
We opened our data center at The Dalles in 2006 — over time investing $1.8 billion in The Dalles and establishing a long-term commitment to the region and state. Now a fully operational site, we've created over 200 total jobs, and we work hard to support the communities in which our employees live and work.
Since 2008, we’ve awarded over $2 million in grants that impact Wasco County and more than $10 million in grants to Oregon nonprofits and schools in areas that we’re passionate about, including science and technology education, carbon reduction, and access to the internet.
Why did Google choose The Dalles?
The Dalles has the right combination of energy infrastructure, developable land, and available workforce for the data center.

Green initiatives
Google is also committed to creating a better web that's better for the environment. As part of this effort, we invest heavily in renewable energy. In 2011, we invested over $100 million in the Shepherds Flat Wind Farm in Oregon, which has the capacity to produce 845MW of energy — enough to power more than 235,000 homes.
