Opinions of Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky have been all over the map this season. Some have been positive, while others have been, well, not.

But none have been more negative than former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi’s during an interview on the Vegas Stats & Information Network on Monday.

“You couldn’t get me to buy Mitchell Trubisky if you had him on a discount rack at Filene’s Basement,” Lombardi said. “There’s no chance. There’s no chance. He can’t throw the ball inbounds half the time.”

It didn’t stop there.

“It’s a joke. I was in Chicago this week and all I saw was Trubisky jerseys. I was thinking, ‘You people are crazy! You’re going to be selling them in three years.’

“When they have to play somebody tough, I think it’s a real problem. … I think the Bears are overvalued.”

While Lombardi has become something of a blowhard in recent years, he does have more than three decades of NFL personnel experience and has spent a considerable amount of time with the likes of Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick.

His opinion can’t be completely dismissed.

Bears fans will predictably be offended by Lombardi’s take, and it is a little too harsh after just eight games. But Trubisky has struggled with his accuracy despite completing 64.2 percent of his passes this year, up from 59 percent as a rookie. He’s on pace to break the Bears’ single-season records for passing yards and touchdown passes.

Trubisky appears to have the mental makeup to ignore comments like Lombardi’s. But his goal should be to eliminate them altogether by getting on a hot streak as the Bears enter a critical three-game run against NFC North opponents.
