Off-duty Howard County deputy shot and killed in Baltimore's Federal Hill

An off-duty deputy with the Howard County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed at a bar in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood on Thursday night.

According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Ryan Demby was at the bar when an argument broke out among other patrons just after midnight. During the argument, shots were fired, the law enforcement agency said in a statement.

The Howard County Sheriff's Office said on social media that they are "mourning the shocking and tragic loss of an off-duty deputy who was shot and killed in Baltimore last night. Deputy Ryan Demby was in a bar around midnight when a verbal argument broke out between other patrons. During the altercation, shots were fired and Deputy Demby was struck. The Baltimore Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan's friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff's office family. We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time."

Demby was 23-years-old. According to a social media post from the Howard County Sheriff's Office, Demby just graduated from the police academy in March. Photos show his father is also a Sheriff's Deputy.

On Friday, Baltimore police confirmed that Ryan Alexander Demby was shot and killed on September 29th.

At approximately 12:14AM, officers responded to the 1100 block of South Charles Street to investigate a call for a shooting.

At the scene, officers observed a 23-year-old man suffering from numerous life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Medics responded and took the victim to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Shock Trauma, where, despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead.

Police say the verbal altercation occurred prior to the incident. It is unknown what prompted the argument.

On Friday, a Federal Hill resident told FOX45 News he heard approximately eight gunshots from his home two blocks away.
