‘What are you looking at, fool’, Lionel Messi’s viral phrase engraved in a Galician monastery for 400 years

Visitors who look at one of the medallions where the ribs meet in the Gothic cloister will see that in one of them there is an inscription on the stone that says exactly the same sentence that Messi uttered: “What are you looking at, fool.”

The phrase, as Leo said it, is set in stone Samos monastery, in Lugo, located on the Camino to Santiago. And although to many it seems like a joke from whoever wrote it now due to the importance of Messi’s outburst, from the place itself they confirmed that it has been there for a long time.

Although it is not known exactly who is behind the inscription, the official website of the Monastery of Samos assures it it is believed that it could be a joke on the visitors by the stonemason Pedro Rodrigues who took care of the reconstruction of the monastery between 1562 and 1582, changing the Romanesque style into the Gothic one.

Where is the Abbey of Samos

The Monastery, according to the information on the site itself, is located 43 km from Lugo, 12 km from Sarria, 34 from Piedrafita del Cebrero and 43 from Monforte de Lemos.

The place is open to the public and has guided tours two to four times a day. Admission is free, but a contribution of around 5 euros is required for “the maintenance of this huge building (14,000 m2) and of the monastic community.
