Wesley has been speaking to Het Nieuwsblad about his career after joining Club Brugge on loan, and the Aston Villa man seems to be holding a grudge.
What’s the story?
Well, as you will know, Wesley’s time in the Premier League was ruined by Burnley’s Ben Mee, after a shocking challenge at Turf Moor in 2019.
Aston Villa confirmed that their £35,000-a-week striker had suffered knee ligament damage, and the Brazilian never really got back in the team.
Dean Smith has since signed Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, while Wesley has been shipped out on loan to Belgium.
Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, the £22m man said: “It wasn’t an accident. If you look at the footage, you can see that he was after my legs. He flew in crazily. But for me, that’s a thing of the past. He never apologised.”
Nearly three years on from the incident, it seems the 24-year-old hasn’t forgiven the Burnley centre-back for what he did.
Can Wesley get his Aston Villa career back on track?
Of course he can.
While the Belgian Pro League isn’t comparable to the Premier League, Wesley will be playing Champions League football this season.
That gives him a real platform to show Smith what he can do, up against some of the best clubs in Europe.
Should he impress on a stage like that, then Smith will surely be more than happy to bring him back to the Midlands.
In our view, we can’t see Wesley being sold.
Ings is 29, and has suffered ligament damage in both knees, so there’s every chance he could have another bad injury.
That would leave just Watkins, so there’s no reason why Wesley can’t return to Villa Park and see some action alongside the ex-Brentford man and Ings.
