Five Chinese nationals arrested in Kolkata with 197 kg of banned drugs

Their passport entries have revealed that they have been travelling to India at least four times a year since 2016.

Five Chinese nationals have been arrested in Kolkata on Saturday over charges of smuggling nearly 200 kg of banned narcotic substance.

A team of Government Railway Police (GRP) from Sealdah caught the five men from the Kolkata (Chitpur) railway station with 197 kilograms of Amphetamine, a banned narcotic drug with an approximate market value of Rs 39 crore. The police team was on a routine vigil at the station area when they spotted the Chinese group.

All five men belong to the Guangzhou province in China. According to cops, the group had plans to fly out of Kolkata early on Saturday morning. They had bought air tickets for an early morning Cathy Pacific flight to Hong Kong. Their passport entries have revealed that they have been travelling to India at least four times a year since 2016.

The drug was recovered in the form of tablets packed and hidden inside seven suitcases. Police have also seized eleven smartphones, more than 60 debit and credit cards, five Chinese passports and two Indian sim-cards from the possession of the arrested men.

The case has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) West Bengal. Last week, another Chinese national was arrested from Siliguri in north Bengal with Indian Aadhar card in his possession. Ye Wang, the arrested person, was booked under the Foreigners Act over charges of forgery and cheating.
