CHICOPEE — A Springfield man shot two weeks ago on Center Street has died of his injuries, and the case is now being investigated as a homicide, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.

The deceased has been identified as Luis Vazquez, 28, said James Leydon, communications director for District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

He died Sunday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was being treated for his injuries.

Vazquez was shot Aug. 21 near 500 Center St., Chicopee. Police were called to the area for reported gunfire at about 1:40 a.m.

When police arrived, they found shell casings on the scene but no victims. A short time later, Vazquez was brought by a private vehicle to the emergency department at Baystate for treatment of a gunshot injury.

So far there have been no arrests.

The investigation is being conducted by Chicopee police, state police detectives assigned to Gulluni’s office and the DA’s murder unit.
