Nigel Farage's battle for South Thanet will go to a recount, say Ukip

Senior Ukip sources say the likely outcome of the election for the party nationally will be a 'travesty of democracy'

Nigel Farage casts his vote in Ramsgate(PA)

Nigel Farage's battle for South Thanet will go to a recount, according to senior Ukip sources.

The Ukip leader's targeted Kent seat has been a fierce three-way battle between Farage and his Tory and Labour rivals - and the party think it will go right down to the wire following a surprising exit poll.

A Ukip spokesperson said: "It's very tight, we'll see."

The same source predicted a win for former Ukip policy cheif Tim Aker in Thurrock.

But he said the projected outcome of the election would make a mockery of the electoral process, and said constitutional reform needs to take place.

He said: "The success of Ukip will be measured by how many second places we win, by vote share and by seats won.

"It's likely that 20% of the electorate will vote for Ukip and the Greens, and will get 2% of the seats.

"This is a travesty of democracy and must change."
