Cowboys vs. Cardinals: Score, results, highlights from Monday night game in Arizona

The Dallas Cowboys shrugged off a slow start Monday night and rolled to a 28-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz.

Dallas held the ball for just 1:54 in the first quarter and failed to register a first down as Arizona grabbed a 7-0 lead. From there, quarterback Dak Prescott sparked the offense and Dallas’ defense produced six sacks to help secure the win. Prescott finished the game with two passing touchdowns, while running back Ezekiel Elliott added 80 yards on the ground and a score.

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald caught 13 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown and Carson Palmer threw for 325 yards. Arizona outgained the Cowboys 332-273 but struggled in the red zone, where the Cardinals missed a field  goal attempt and turned the ball over on downs.

Final Score: Cowboys 28, Cardinals 17  

11:46 p.m.: It's final in Arizona. The Cowboys take a knee (again) and secure the victory.  

11:41 p.m.: That should do it in Arizona. The Cardinals drove down the field but didn’t come away with any points. Palmer threw an incompletion on fourth down and the Cowboys take over.

11:35 p.m.: There are two minutes to go in Arizona and the Cowboys lead 28-17. The Cardinals will face a second-and-long when play resumes. 

11:32 p.m.: Dallas’ drive lasts just three plays and the Cowboys punt it back to Arizona. The Cardinals have the ball at their 13 trailing by 11 with 2:57 left in regulation. 

11:29 p.m.: Following a quick three-and-out by Arizona, Dallas gets the ball back at its 38-yard line with a chance to seal the victory. 

11:23 p.m.: Touchdown, Cowboys. Dallas extends its lead in just four plays. After Butler’s catch, Prescott scrambled for 7 yards. Two plays later, Elliott took a handoff, burst through the line of scrimmage and found his way into the end zone to put Dallas ahead 28-17.  

11:19 p.m.: On first down, Prescott fakes a handoff to Elliott, rolls to his right and releases a throw deep downfield. Brice Butler manages to sneak behind defender Tyrann Mathieu and hauls in the pass for a 53-yard reception. Dallas now has it on the Arizona 22. 

11:15 p.m.: Field goal, Cardinals. The Cardinals now trail 21-17 after a 37-yard field goal by Phil Dawson. Arizona had a chance to extend the drive, but Brittan Golden dropped a pass from Palmer on third down. 

11:11 p.m.: Kurt Warner was impressed with Fitzgerald’s last catch. 

11:06 p.m.: The Cardinals complete the third-and-long on miraculous catch by Fitzgerald. Cowboys defensive back Orlando Scandrick rose over Fitzgerald and seemed to have broken up Palmer’s pass, but Fitzgerald managed to secure the ball as it was falling to the ground, giving Arizona a fresh set of downs. 

11:03 p.m.: Palmer appeared to have connected with J.J. Nelson for a 45-yard pass that would have put the Cardinals in the red zone, but Nelson failed to complete the catch as the ball bounced out of his hands when he hit the ground. Arizona now faces a third-and-18 from its 33. 

10:55 p.m.: Touchdown, Cowboys. Dallas retakes the lead. Arizona brings pressure but Prescott escapes and scrambles to his right. Nearing the sideline, Prescott launches a 37-yard pass to the end zone that Brice Butler hauls in for the score. Dallas now leads 21-14. 

10:50 p.m.: During the third quarter, Fitzgerald moved into eighth place on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list. 

10:47 p.m.: Dallas brings pressure on third-and-1, forcing a Palmer incompletion. The Cowboys take over with great field position near midfield 15 seconds into the fourth quarter. 

End of third quarter: Cowboys 14, Cardinals 14 

10:42 p.m.: After tying the score, the Cardinals force a three-and-out and now have a chance to take the lead. They’ll get the ball back with 1:07 remaining in the quarter.

10:36 p.m.: Touchdown, Cardinals. Arizona ties the score 14-14 after Palmer finds Fitzgerald open in the right corner of the end zone for a 15-yard score. The catch was Fitzgerald’s 10th of the game.

10:33 p.m.: Larry Fitzgerald hauls in a 37-yard pass, his ninth catch of the game, to put Arizona in position to tie the score.

10:31 p.m.: Dallas quickly goes three-and-out and Arizona will take over at the Cowboys' 46 trailing by a touchdown with 4:45 remaining in the quarter. 

10:25 p.m.: On third-and-7, rookie cornerback Jourdan Lewis breaks up a pass to Jaron Brown that would have given Arizona a first down. Instead, the Cardinals are forced to punt and Dallas regains possession. 

10:13 p.m.: Touchdown, Cowboys. Dallas takes its first lead of the game. After three runs from Elliott brings the Cowboys to the Arizona 15, Prescott finds Dez Bryant in the middle of the field. Bryant turns upfield, eludes two tacklers and runs into a pile of Arizona defenders near the 2-yard line. The Cardinals fail to bring Bryant down as he pushes his way into the end zone to complete the highlight reel play. Dallas now leads 14-7. 

10:08 p.m.: Arizona opens the second half with a three-and-out. Dallas records its third sack of the game on the drive. The Cowboys will take over with good field possession at the Arizona 46.  

10:02 p.m.: Dallas picks up one first down on a 22-yard Prescott completion to Terrance Williams, but its drive stalls near midfield. Following a punt, Arizona will start its first second-half possession from the 7. 

9:58 p.m.: We’re back. Dallas receives the second-half kickoff and will take over at its 25-yard line. 

Halftime: Cowboys 7, Cardinals 7

9:45 p.m.: The Cardinals and Cowboys head into the locker room tied. Arizona dominated the first quarter and strung together two long possessions, but only managed to come away with a touchdown. Dallas finally found a rhythm on offense in the second quarter and evened the score. The Cowboys still, however, have just 57 total yards.  

9:38 p.m.: Touchdown, Cowboys. Dallas ties it 7-7 with just over a minute remaining in the half. Prescott runs a zone read, keeps the ball and scrambles to the goal line, where he meets a Cardinals defender. But Prescott leaps over the would-be tackler and falls into the end zone.

9:33 p.m.: We’ve arrived at the two-minute warning with the Cardinals leading 7-0. After a good return from Ryan Switzer, Dallas will have the ball in Arizona territory following the timeout. 

9:26 p.m.: Dallas drives into Arizona territory for the first time, but comes away with no points. On third down, Chandler Jones sacks Prescott for a 9-yard loss, which pushes Dallas out of field goal range. The Cowboys are forced to punt, and Arizona will take over at its 10.

9:20 p.m.: Dallas picks up its first first down of the night. On third-and-1, Elliott takes a handoff, bursts through the line of scrimmage and gains 30 yards. 

9:15 p.m.: Arizona advances to the Dallas 40 but fails to move any further and the Cowboys will start their drive near the 5. Dallas has had the ball for just 3:27, but only trail 7-0. 

9:09 p.m.: Dallas goes three-and-out again. The Cowboys have run six offensive plays so far and have tallied just 4 total yards. 

9:06 p.m.: The Cardinals come away with no points on their second drive. Palmer finds Brown for what appears to be another touchdown, but the score is waved off because of a holding penalty. After Palmer is brought down on a scramble for no gain, Phil Dawson enters to attempt a field goal. He misses wide right and the score remains 7-0.  

End of first quarter: Cardinals 7, Cowboys 0

9:03 p.m.: The Cardinals dominate the game's opening 15 minutes. Arizona already leads by a touchdown and play will resume with the Cardinals in the red zone. Arizona holds possession for 13:06 and tallies eight first downs, compared to zero first downs by the Cowboys. Palmer finishes the quarter with 135 yards passing and a touchdown, while receiver Larry Fitzgerald has already caught six passes.

8:57 p.m.: The Cardinals hand it off to Chris Johnson, who fails to pick up the first down, but the Cowboys were called for lining up offside, prolonging Arizona’s drive. 

8:56 p.m.: Palmer is now 9 for 9 passing. The Cardinals are facing a fourth-and-1 at the Cowboys' 40.

8:48 p.m.: Carson Palmer has completed his first seven passes. He already has 98 yards and a touchdown nine minutes into the first quarter. 

8:44 p.m.: Dallas’ opening possession lasts just three plays. Ezekiel Elliott takes two handoffs that both fail to gain a yard before Dak Prescott completes a short pass, forcing a punt. 

8:37 p.m.: Touchdown, Cardinals. Arizona marches down the field and scores on its opening possession to take a 7-0 lead. After driving to the Cowboys' 25, the Cardinals face a third-and-11. Carson Palmer drops back and finds Jaron Brown for a touchdown. The Cardinals register three plays that go for 20 yards or more on the drive. 

8:31 p.m.: The game is underway in Arizona. The Cardinals win the toss and will receive the opening kickoff. 

8:25 p.m.: The Cowboys lock arms and take a knee in the middle of the field prior to the national anthem, then walk back to the sideline and continue to lock arms. The Cardinals also lock arms. Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones takes a knee with the team at midfield, and then locks arms as Dallas stands for the anthem.
