Service Encounters: Retail Work, Consumption, and Inequality in Urban China

*Mini Grant*

“Service Encounters: Retail Work, Consumption, and Inequality in Urban China" by Dr. Amy Hanser, Assistant Professor of Sociology, University of British Colombia.

How is social class displayed in Chinese society? One way is on the bodies of retail workers in large cities. Hanser worked and lived with Chinese retail clerks to explore how dress codes and standards of femininity displayed social distinctions in contemporary China.
