NRS will host guest speaker Gary Hooser, former State Senator and recently appointed Director of the Office of Environmental Quality Control ("OEQC"), who will present: "Lessons from the Ledge: An insider's view of the Legislature, the importance of public advocacy, personal relationships and environmental protection."
Mr. Hooser has extensive experience in the public and private sectors. He has 20 years of experience in small business as a real estate broker and as a publisher. He established a career in public service with 4 years on the Kauai County Council and 8 years in the Hawaii State Senate, 4 of which he served as Majority Leader. While in the Senate, Mr. Hooser was deeply involved in the Hawaii Superferry EIS issue, was the primary introducer and advocate of the "Solar Mandate" law, and was a leading civil unions advocate during the HB444 2009/2010 legislative session. He was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 2010. Mr. Hooser was recently appointed by Governor Abercrombie to serve as the Director of OEQC in the Department of Health.
Mr. Hooser is married, with two children. He is a 30 year resident of Kauai, and currently maintains full time residence both on Kauai and in Kalihi Valley, commuting weekly.
