Play Streets is Coming to the Bayview

The city of San Francisco, Sunday Streets, the Bayview Opera House, San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department and Bayview Station of the San Francisco Police Department, will host San Francisco’s second Play Streets event this Saturday, July 20 from 12- 4pm. Oakdale Ave from 3rd Street to Lane in the Bayview will be closed to cars and open to the community to create a safe open space where neighborhood kids can play and be active.

San Francisco Recreation & Parks is bringing their popular ‘Mobile Rec’ program featuring BMX bikes, a climbing wall, skateboard ramps, helmets and staff to help facilitate these fun activities. On Mendell Plaza, The Mobile Arts Platform (MAP) and Barbary Coast Amusements team up to present “A Day on Mendell Plaza,” featuring a pop up art gallery with art works made by students in the Bayview Opera House’s ‘Dare 2 Dream’ ARTS Summer Program. An original 25-minute musical/circus play, “Just Add Water," by Natasha Kaluza and Jamie Coventry will be performed as part of the Mendell programming and with two showings at 12:00 pm and 3:00 pm. The Salvation Army will generously provide healthy snacks for kids.

All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Bayview's Play Street event is the second of four Pilot events being organized in these San Francisco neighborhoods: Western Addition, Bayview, Excelsior and Tenderloin. This program is made possible by support from Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross, with additional support from The San Francisco Foundation, District Attorney George Gascon’s Neighborhood Justice Fund, The Seed Foundation, SF Department of Public Health and in-kind support from San Francisco Recreation and Park’s Mobile Rec program.

A key goal of San Francisco’s Play Streets program is to teach local stakeholders how to organize their own small-scaleSunday Streets style programs so neighborhoods can organize events on their own- exponentially increasing the opportunities and benefits these kinds of programs bring to the community.
