Guidelines for implementing Google™ Custom Search

These guidelines will help you integrate Google Custom Search and AdSense for Search into your site quickly and easily. We have provided guidelines on how layout, Google attribution and branding must be handled.

Overview

Google must be given attribution using the appropriate text or brand elements when Google results are shown. You will be able to choose among Google Custom Search logos. The following basic principles govern use of the Google name in conjunction with Google Custom search results:

  • Adherence to these guidelines is required prior to the inclusion of Google Custom Search search box on your website.
  • You may not display Google Brand Features (Google's trademarks, logos, web pages, screen shots, or other distinctive features) in any manner that implies sponsorship or endorsement by Google, except for your involvement in the Google Custom Search program.
  • You may not use Google brand features to disparage Google, its products or services.
  • You may not display Google brand features on your site if it contains or displays adult content or promotes illegal activities, gambling, or the sale of tobacco or alcohol to persons under twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • The Google name must be associated with Google search results only, and only if Google is the exclusive provider of search results.
  • Google logos other than those authorized in these guidelines may not be used in conjunction with Google Custom Search results. This is to avoid user confusion with Google WebSearch, which uses the Google logo. Google Custom Search is a modified version of Google WebSearch and therefore is branded as such.
  • A search user should never be presented with only ads as users use search box to primarily search content. Therefore, there must be at least one Google Web Search result above the fold (as defined by the visible area of a browser set to a standard font size with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768).

1. Layout

1.1 Search Box for your website

This search box is required for Google Custom Search. This is provided to you in the Custom Search Interface. You may choose a Google Custom Search logo that will be displayed next to your search box, or you may choose a watermark that will be displayed inside your search box.

The code for the search box will be generated for you to cut and paste into your site.

1.2 Search Box and other attributes for your results

The layout of the results page will look similar to the results page displayed when you do a search at Google.com. However, with Google Custom Search, you can add your own logo to the top of the search results page. You will also be able to customize the size, alignment of your logo, in addition to many elements of the search results page:

  • Background color behind the Google logo
  • Search Results Title
  • Search Results Background
  • Search Results Text
  • Search Results Links
  • Search Results Visited Links
  • Search Results Similar Pages Link
You can set the target of the search results so that they load in a new window, into the parent of the current website frame, or into the full window.

2. Google Attribution and Branding

As stated, only the authorized Google Custom Search logos may be used in conjunction with Google Custom Search results. These forms of attribution are used in order to maintain consistency and preserve the Google brand identity.
For questions about other uses of Google Brand Features, please see http://www.google.com/permissions/guidelines.html.
