Lajos Kassák (1887-1967): DUR Portfolio, 1924, Vienna

The illustrated volumes published close to the Picture Architecture Portfolio (1-MA, 1921 and MA Picture Book, 1922, and even the DUR Portfolio in 1924) display the Dada-Constructivist double affiliation, just like the Berlin-based Sándor Bortnyik's or László Moholy-Nagy's albums. The German-language MA-Buch (Sturm, 1923), published in Berlin, includes his Dada poems wrapped alongside his constructivist linocuts. The MA Picture Book and the DUR Portfolio reconcile the Dada playfulness and freedom with geometry. For Kassák, a self-taught artist, the painterly reduction of the view was not a concern, either as a theoretical or a professional-technical problem; nor did he concern himself with Cubism, which was so often cited in the art theoretical literature of the day as the prior 'phase' that had foreshadowed Constructivism - and a politically neutral, predominantly formal-aesthetic stylistic enterprise at that. The increasing vital role of Constructivism in his art after 1922 manifests itself in his picture architectures - within which he distinguished spatial constructions and dynamic constructions - and in his typographical work, book covers, kiosk- and stage designs.

A Berlinben németül publikált MA-Buch (Sturm, 1923) dadaista versei mellé konstruktivista linómetszeteit tördelték. A Ma Buch-hoz Gáspár Endre írt előszót.
