Vigilance

The attributes illustrate the virtue of Vigilance. The cockerel crows to announce the approaching day, while the lamp keeps scholars awake and is a symbol of the enlightened mind. The four cardinal virtues are normally Temperance, Justice, Prudence and Fortitude but here in the Citizens’ Hall (Burgerzaal) Fortitude is replaced by Vigilance, showing that the city fathers were vigilant in the service of the city.
