Backstage at the Elbphilharmonie

with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester

Members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester gave contest winners and media representatives a backstage tour one sunny afternoon in November 2016.
The tour took place on the occasion of the orchestra’s move to its new rehearsal facilities. Orchestra manager Achim Dobschall explained all about the day-to-day activities here.

Dumbfounded visitors in the Grand Hall.

The musicians offered a glimpse into their day-to-day routines. Left: Sub-Principal Double Bass Katharina Bunners-Goll; right: Academy student Luzia Vieira.
The musicians’ instruments, concert attire and sheet music are transported in the large cases.
The changing rooms and rehearsal rooms are designed specifically for the needs of musicians. The large conductors’ changing room offers plenty of space for concert preparation, meetings and has a private attached bathroom.
Double bassist Benedikt Kany reveals the lockers located in the cello and double bass rehearsal room. Each locker is designed for the different instruments in mind. Musicians can store their instruments, concert attire and personal belongings in the lockers.
Dave Claessen warms up in the French horn rehearsal room – which has a breathtaking view ...

... and some fresh air.

The green room is located between the backstage area of the Grand Hall and the foyer. This is where musicians can sign autographs and greet fans. This room is also used for meetings outside the concert season.
Giving interviews is a part of being a professional musician. Here concertmaster Stefan Wagner is being interviewed in his changing room, which he shares with concertmasters from other orchestras.
One floor down - on the eleventh floor - the NDR is doing the sound recordings of the concerts in their own production studio.

And sometimes, you just need to relax and enjoy life!
